2 CNA Dwayne Brown It was over 10 years ago that the perseverance and talent of Artistic Director Sonia Destri Lie gave rise to the Companhia Urbana de Dança. I was immediately struck by the lyricism and energy of this incredible troupe when I first saw it, but also by the seamless melding of urban, contemporary and social dance that has become its signature. Destri Lie herself had a very western dance upbringing in Rio de Janeiro, working in ballet, musicals and film before discovering what has been referred to as the freedom in the language of hip-hop. What she has done with these young dancers, primarily from the favelas of Rio, is extraordinary, honing a theatrically inspiring style that is more about the artistic than the exhibitionist qualities of street dance. I m thrilled to introduce this company to our audiences and hope it won t be too long before its return engagement. Enjoy! Quand je l ai vue en action, j ai immédiatement été conquise par le lyrisme et l énergie de cette troupe fabuleuse, ainsi que par l alliance parfaite de la danse sociale avec les styles urbains et contemporains qui a fait sa réputation. Sonia Destri Lie a ellemême reçu une formation très occidentale à Rio de Janeiro, et elle a travaillé dans les domaines du ballet, de la comédie musicale et du cinéma avant de découvrir ce que l on a qualifié de «liberté» dans le langage du hip hop. Le travail qu elle a fait avec ces jeunes danseurs, qui proviennent pour la plupart des favelas de Rio, est extraordinaire, élaborant un style théâtral inspirant qui met en valeur les qualités artistiques plutôt que les aspects démonstratifs de la danse de rue. Their themes were inspired by the streets of Rio de Janeiro, the complexity of the human experience within this environment, and their personal histories. Their performance is infused with sparkling vitality, and freedom is an omnipresent element. Every single dancer gets the opportunity to express his or her unique personality and special talents, while congenially interacting with the rest of the company, reflecting the expression of the individual as part of a community. 6 About the Company À propos de la compagnie When Companhia Urbana de Dança / Sonia Destri Lie made its US debut at New York City Center in 2010, the eyes of even the most been-there-saw-that critics opened wide with amazement. Destri s boldly original mix of contemporary Brazilian dance and hip-hop infused both forms with new rigor meditative one moment, explosive the next. Locating the true heart of hip-hop, Destri strips it of its easy tricks, bringing it back to its original emotional depth, expressive range, and poetic integrity. Founded in Brazil in 2004 by dancer Tiago Sousa and choreographer and artistic director Sonia Destri Lie, Companhia Urbana de Dança is an ensemble of street performers working to foster appreciation of the human experience through dance. Destri s experiences traveling through Europe for work in theatre and films exposed her to hip-hop and b-boy techniques. Highly influenced by Brazilian street forms, she began to integrate these techniques into her already established contemporary movement sensibility. Pulling from the favelas of Rio, where many of Destri s company members grew up, Companhia Urbana de Dança aims to transcend cultural boundaries while showcasing eclectic skill sets. The work of Companhia Urbana de Dança brings its dancers identities, testimonials, and attitudes to the stage, and it does that with a carioca, Afro- Brazilian accent, which is nevertheless universal. Since its creation in 2004, the Company has performed throughout Brazil and abroad in many well-known festivals and theatres, including the world renowned Biennales de la Danse in Lyon, France, (2006, 2008), Fall for Dance at City Center in New York (2010), and Jacob s Pillow Dance Festival (2013). In 2014 the company embarked on its first major tour of the US, which included its debut at the Joyce Theater in New York, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; it also returned to Jacob s Pillow for the world premiere of I. You We... All black (Nêgo). Highlights from 2015 included a residency and performances at the Biennial of the Americas and Newman Center for the Performing Arts in Denver and a return to the Fall for Dance festival; in the spring of 2016 the company will perform in several cities in the US, including its Los Angeles debut at the Roy and Edna Disney (CalArts) Theater, a return to Miami, premieres in several other cities and its Canadian debut at DanceHouse in Vancouver and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. 8 Sonia Destri Lie and the company strive to connect with children and young adults wherever the company travels, particularly in underprivileged and minority communities, with workshops and classes that joyfully celebrate dance as a means to develop self-confidence and awareness. 9 Biographies Sonia Destri Lie Artistic Director/Choreographer Sonia Destri Lie is the artistic director and choreographer of Companhia Urbana de Dança. With degrees in both Psychology and Ballet, Destri has a unique perspective on human expression and human form. After completing her studies, she travelled throughout Brazil and Europe, working in dance, theatre, film, and musicals. It was then that she discovered hiphop and b-boy dance. She defined her unique and refreshing interpretation of these styles by infusing them with the rich cultural influences of Brazil and the favelas from within. Her works creatively embrace elements of hip-hop, b-boy, and contemporary dance, as well as Brazilian social dances. Destri s choreographic style has been cited for making a significant contribution to the field of dance. She has created an entirely new genre that results in greater appreciation for existing dance styles and the significance of socio-cultural influences. Reviews of her performances from both the media and her contemporaries have been nothing short of spectacular. She has received the Best Script Award from the Ford Foundation, the Staging Award from the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2011 for Eu Danço, the FADA Award from the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro (2012 and 2013), and the Best Choreography Award by Conseil International de la Danse (CID-Unesco). 10 Monica Lima E Souza Research Monica Lima E Souza has a PhD in History and has been studying African History since She has lectured at universities around the world, including Angola, Brazil, South Africa, and Tanzania, and has trained many Brazilian teachers, giving short courses in many parts of the country and writing books to help teachers incorporate the subject into the curricula. She has worked with teenagers and adolescents for many years, and is now the coordinator of LEÁFRICA (Laboratory of African Studies) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where she is Assistant Professor of African History. 12 Companhia Urbana de Dança is a unique dance group with roots in hip-hop, urban, and contemporary aesthetics from Brazil. The group consists of eight young dancers from Rio de Janeiro. The following are short excerpts of personal accounts from each of the dancers, describing their journey of dancing all the way up from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the international stage. Rafael Balbino Dancer Today I can say that dance is my life, since I can t imagine myself without it. I still have the same feeling I had when I started seven years ago, and I really found myself. Why is dance so important to me? Because somehow, it helped me find the right way, especially in a dangerous neighbourhood. Johnny Britto Dancer Johnny Britto is a proud member of Companhia Urbana de Dança. Understanding that dance is not as respected as it should be in his hometown of Baixada, he claims that dance has given him a sense of confidence and direction. André Feijão Dancer André Feijão credits dance with giving him not only a sense of identity, but selfconfidence as well. Rather than following the normal lifestyle of his peers, he found direction in his dance studies; just by dancing, he discovered where he wanted to go in life. It was like a miracle, like a bright light. I saw that I could be myself. La Companhia Urbana de Dança est une troupe de danse unique en son genre qui puise ses racines dans le hip-hop, ainsi que dans la danse et l esthétique contemporaine du Brésil. Le groupe est composé de huit jeunes danseurs de Rio de Janeiro. Rafael Balbino Danseur «Aujourd hui, je peux dire que la danse, c est ma vie, parce que je ne peux pas imaginer vivre sans elle. J ai toujours la même impression que lorsque j ai commencé, il y a sept ans, et j ai vraiment trouvé ma voie. Pourquoi la danse est-elle si importante pour moi? Tout simplement parce qu elle m a aidé à trouver le bon chemin, en particulier dans un environnement dangereux.» Johnny Britto Danseur Johnny Britto est fier d appartenir à la Companhia Urbana de Dança. Selon lui, la danse qu il pratique n est pas aussi respectée qu elle devrait l être dans sa ville natale de Baixada. Il affirme qu elle lui a donné confiance et qu elle lui a permis de trouver sa voie. André Feijão Danseur André Feijão estime que la danse lui a permis non seulement de trouver son identité, mais également de prendre confiance en lui-même. 13 Miguel Fernandes Dancer When he was 12, Miguel and his friends attended their first funk ball (a nightclub where they play music that brings out brutal behaviours from the crowd) in the favelas of Macacos. Despite this violent introduction to the club scene, Miguel found a love for high energy atmosphere, and eventually, for performance. Jessica Nascimento Dancer Jessica Nascimento began dancing at an early age and is inspired by the ongoing quest for technical improvement. Waking up at 4 a.m. in her Rio suburb, taking several buses to be at the rehearsal studio by 9 a.m., Nascimento proves to be not only dedicated but disciplined as well. While her mother offers tremendous support, her father still refuses to acknowledge her career. Nascimento finds that despite her father s opposition, dance is her life and she would not want to be doing anything else. Julio Rocha Dancer Having worked as a baker, lifeguard, gardener, and mason s helper, Rocha started his dance career from humble beginnings, to say the least. With the support of his father, Rocha grew up with the idea that if he were to follow his dreams, the doors would eventually open for him. Jessica Nascimento Danseuse Jessica Nascimento a commencé à danser dès son plus jeune âge, et elle cherche constamment à s améliorer sur le plan technique. Chaque matin, elle se léve à quatre heures dans le faubourg de Rio où elle habite, prend l autobus et, après plusieurs changements, arrive vers neuf heures au studio de répétition. Cela montre à quel point elle est déterminée et disciplinée. Sa mère l encourage énormément, mais son père refuse toujours d approuver sa carrière. Julio Rocha Danseur Après avoir été tour à tour boulanger, maître-nageur, jardinier et apprenti-maçon, Julio Rocha s est lancé dans une carrière de danseur et a connu des débuts plutôt modestes, c est le moins qu on puisse dire. Encouragé par son père, il a grandi avec la conviction que s il suivait ses rêves, les portes finiraient bien par s ouvrir. Fidèle aux conseils de son père qui lui disait de toujours donner le meilleur de lui-même, il a commencé à s initier à la capoeira et s est donné ainsi les moyens d atteindre ses objectifs. 14 Tiago Sousa Dancer Having grown up incredibly shy, Tiago watched as his more gregarious sisters danced hip-hop with their huge circles of friends. Inspired to study dance as a way of breaking out of his introversion not only in movement, but in his interpersonal relationships as well Tiago began taking classes. He quickly found himself connecting to the music and the movement while also making new friends and avoiding the potentially violent lifestyle of the favelas. Allan Wagner Dancer I ve always felt rejected, as I am a very shy person, and people never got close to me. Dance makes me closer to people and a little happier in life! Thiago Williams Dancer When I was 13, I used to go to dance clubs every Sunday. There were hip hop battles, social dances, and boy band covers. I discovered Mr. Wiggles and started studying every video that I could find of him. I began performing with cover groups and practicing jazz dance. Having been told to study, to go to university and get a nice job, it was difficult for my family and close friends to accept that I could live just for dance. But once I started supporting myself with my dancing, everything started to change. Il s est tout de suite senti à l aise dans la musique et le mouvement. En plus, il s est fait de nouveaux amis et s est éloigné du mode de vie violent des favelas. Allan Wagner Danseur «Je me suis toujours senti rejeté et, comme je suis extrêmement timide, les gens ne m abordaient jamais. Grâce à la danse, je me sens plus proche des gens et je suis un peu plus heureux dans la vie!» Thiago Williams Danseur «Quand j avais 13 ans, j allais danser tous les dimanches. Il y avait des batailles de hip hop, des danses sociales et des groupes de reprise. J ai découvert Mr. Wiggles et j ai étudié toutes les vidéos que je trouvais de lui. J ai commencé à faire des spectacles avec des groupes de reprise et je me suis initié à la danse jazz. Autour de moi, on m avait toujours dit qu il fallait faire des études, aller à l université, afin d obtenir un bon emploi. C est pourquoi ma famille et mes amis ont eu de la difficulté à comprendre que je puisse passer mon temps à danser.
