2 CNA Dwayne Brown Hofesh Shechter is a force of nature. Dance nature, that is. The man is simply filled with raw yet refined energy that he transmits to an explosive yet precise movement expression. Since bursting on to the scene over 10 years ago, Hofesh and his company have toured extensively worldwide, bringing his powerful and personal signature to both eclectic and traditional venues. barbarians finds him in an irreverent mood, struggling with questions about life and love amidst dynamic sections of choreographic fortitude, Baroque music interplayed with hard core electronica, and montages that range from raves to touching duets. I admire his audacity, his courage, his wit and his ability to challenge, not to mention his incredible craft as both a composer and a choreographer. This is the third appearance of Hofesh Shechter Company at NAC Dance, and I trust it will be an unforgettable experience. Enjoy! Hofesh Shechter est une force de la nature qui sillonne le monde de la danse. Véritable concentré d énergie pure et raffinée tout à la fois, le chorégraphe impressionne par son mouvement explosif, mais aussi étonnamment précis. Depuis ses débuts il y a plus de dix ans, il a effectué avec sa compagnie des tournées un peu partout dans le monde, apportant sur des scènes tant éclectiques que traditionnelles le style puissant et personnel qui fait sa renommée. Dans barbarians, il se sent d humeur irrévérencieuse. La vie et l amour font l objet de vifs débats qui se manifestent sous forme d intrépides et dynamiques fragments chorégraphiques allant de séquences rave à des duos touchants, le tout sur une musique baroque entrecoupée d électro hardcore. J admire son audace, son courage, son esprit et son sens du défi, sans oublier son incroyable talent de compositeur et de chorégraphe. 3 barbarians A trilogy by / Trilogie d Hofesh Shechter Performed by / Interprétation Hofesh Shechter Company The infinitely unpredictable Hofesh Shechter presents a sparse world for three wildly different takes on intimacy, passion and the banality of love. Revealing his choreography at its most elegant and intimate, the highly acclaimed and perturbing the barbarians in love opens the evening. Trembling with emotion residing within order, six white-clad figures move as one to the strains of an ecclesiastic baroque score. What follows, as two very different works unfold, is a volatile explosion of dubstep grooves in the bad at once joyous and trance-like and a poignant duet Two completely different angles of the same fucking thing, which together complete an evening showcasing the singular and wry voice of their creator and the versatility and talent of his individual dancers. Hofesh Shechter, chorégraphe totalement imprévisible, introduit le spectateur dans un monde dépouillé pour présenter trois visions totalement différentes de l intimité, de la passion et de la banalité de l amour. La soirée s ouvre avec the barbarians in love, pièce applaudie et dérangeante qui révèle la chorégraphie de Shechter dans ce qu elle a de plus élégant et de plus intime. Six personnages vêtus de blanc, tremblant d émotion, se déplacent comme un seul homme, dans un ordre impeccable, sur une musique baroque sacrée. Le spectacle se poursuit avec deux volets extrêmement différents, une explosion volatile de «dubstep grooves» dans the bad danse à la fois joyeuse et véritable transe et un duo poignant, Two completely different angles of the same fucking thing, qui concluent une soirée où s expriment la voix singulière et ironique du chorégraphe et la polyvalence et le talent de ses danseurs. 6 Biography / Biographie Hofesh Shechter Choreography and Music Hofesh Shechter is renowned for composing atmospheric musical scores to compliment the unique physicality of his movement. He is Artistic Director of the UK-based Hofesh Shechter Company. Following his choreographic debut, Fragments, in 2003, Shechter was commissioned by The Place Prize in 2004 to create Cult, winning the Audience Choice Award. This was followed in 2006 by Uprising, a work for seven men that has since been staged on companies around the world. In 2007 The Place, Southbank Centre and Sadler s Wells Theatre commissioned Shechter to create In your rooms, which earned him the Critics Circle Award for Best Choreography (Modern). In 2008, Shechter formed Hofesh Shechter Company, which has rapidly established an international reputation. Sadler s Wells subsequently commissioned him to create Uprising/In your rooms: The Choreographer s Cut (2009), which was performed at London s iconic Roundhouse. That same year Shechter was commissioned by Brighton Festival to create The Art of Not Looking Back for six female dancers. His first full-length work Political Mother commissioned by venues in Paris, Lyon, Rome, London and Barcelona also had its premiere at Brighton Festival in 2010, and a year later he re-visited the work to create Political Mother: The Choreographer s Cut, which toured rock venues in Berlin, Montpellier, Paris and Hong Kong before being seen at O2 Academy Brixton. Shechter collaborated with Antony Gormley in 2012 to create Survivor for the Barbican Centre. 7 His 2013 work Sun continues to tour extensively after opening at the Melbourne Festival. He has also worked as a choreographer in theatre, television and opera notably at The Royal Court Theatre for Motortown by Simon Stephens (2006), The Arsonists (2007), and for the National Theatre s award winning production of Saint Joan (2007). In television Hofesh choreographed the hit dance sequence Maxxie s Dance for the opening of the second series of Channel 4 s popular drama Skins. In 2013 Shechter created the choreography for Nico Mulhy s opera Two Boys at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was Guest Director of Brighton Festival in 2014 and is currently an Associate Artist of Sadler s Wells. He has recently created a new work Untouchable for the Royal Ballet, at the Royal Opera House, performed to a score co-composed by Hofesh and long-time collaborator Nell Catchpole. This autumn s Royal Opera House season begins with Shechter s opera directorial debut of Gluck s Orphée et Eurydice, codirected with John Fulljames. Plans include choreographing the Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof which will premiere in December 2015 and a new work for Nederlands Dans Theatre which will premiere in April dans des salles de rock à Berlin, Montpellier, Paris et Hong Kong avant de prendre l affiche à l O2 Academy Brixton en octobre dernier.
