2 NEW PUBLICATION L Éveil des modernités Une histoire culturelle de la danse ( ) A seminal book on the revolutions that marked the emergence of modernity in dance. Between 1870 and 1945, as cities blossomed and customs evolved, new forms of performance appeared in the West and with it new perceptions, often diverse and contradictory, of the dancing body. Fascinated by modern technology, some dancers dreamed of a hybridization of the body and the machine while others yearned to rediscover natural movement and vital drives, stifled by modern life. Aware of being in an age of fundamental change, choreographers, dancers and teachers had to position their creative practices in relation to the upheavals of their times. Based on the the most recent international dance research, this book proposes to tell this complex and fascinating story. It shows how choreographic works originate in cultural and social contexts. It also cross examines the study of bodily practices with the analysis of aesthetic and political issues arising from this evolving art. A dance historian, is the author of «Le corps dansant : un laboratoire de la perception», in Histoire du corps, vol. III (Seuil, 2006) and Chopinot (Cénomane, 2010). 4 THE CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA DANSE An innovative institution entirely dedicated to dance Founded in 1998, the Centre National de la Danse has considerable experience and expertise that make it a unique institution serving the dance sector. Its strength lies in its rich resources: the competence of its staff and the diversity of professions represented. At Pantin, on the outskirts of Paris, a comfortable, fully renovated building will include two new stages on its 3rd and 4th levels planned for the end The CND s base in the Lyon/Rhône-Alpes area is responsible for continuing the center s missions in this region. Offering an expanded range of services, the CND has positioned itself to serve as a comprehensive resource center for dance professionals and companies, and to provide public facilities in which to hold diverse and innovative events : > The performance component of the CND s activities has broadened, and developed an even more distinctive identity. Support is provided to projects from their inception, with added access to a highly original cultural mediation service. > The CND s underlying goal is to offer an increasing range of services to dance professionals, with an emphasis on its role as a resource center and on building partnerships in regional France and Europe. Three key missions are identified : > Training and Professional Services, > Heritage Protection, > Artistic Creation. A tool exclusively devoted to dance (11,500 square meters) > 12 dance studios, including three studios offering performance programs, film screenings, and meetings aimed at general audiences. > A specialized Multimedia Library: 46 reading seats, 9 video viewing stations, a current events lounge, and a free lending facility. > A range of meeting points and workspaces for dance professionals, facilitating dialogue and exchange. > Study rooms, conference and meeting facilities. > A Dance Film Library. > A screening theater seating 100 people. 5 GETTING TO THE CND - FRANCE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT > métro ligne 5, station Hoche (direction Bobigny) Only 20 minutes from République. Take the exit ( sortie ) labelled n 1 rue Hoche (to the left). Walk all the way up the Rue Hoche till you spot the Town Hall (Mairie). The CND is at the end of the street. > rer e, (the regional train network - E) Catch a train on the Villiers-sur-Marne or Chelles-Gournay line, get down at the Pantin station (zone 2). 10 minutes from Haussmann - Saint-Lazare station, 5 minutes from the Gare du Nord / Magenta station. At the exit, turn to your right and walk up the Avenue Édouard Vaillant on your left, towards the Town Hall. The CND is in front, on the other side of the canal de l Ourcq. > bus 170, The Centre national de la danse bus stop is 15 minutes from the Porte des Lilas. The bus stop is just in front of the CND.. > bus 151, Centre national de la danse station, 10 minutes from the Porte de Pantin. BY CAR > porte de pantin, the CND is about 5 minutes away from the Porte de Pantin. Take the D115, heading towards Drancy, Centre national de la danse (first follow the rue Petits Ponts and then the avenue du Général Leclerc). The CND is at the end of the road, on the banks of the canal de l Ourcq. BY FOOT OR BICYCLE (BICYCLE TRACKS) > 10 minutes from the Parc de la Villette, along the banks of the canal de l Ourcq. 5
