IN THIS ISSUE From the Director Spring Speaker Deadline for Applications APT Digitizing Project Lunchtime Lectures Historic Preservation Organization (HPO) Field Trips HPres Second Years Visit Wisconsin Usonian Home HPRES Class of 2013 Recent Grad Helps Return Statue to Rightful Owner Faculty News Alumni News Contact Info Historic Preservation Newsletter: Winter 2012 GREETINGS FROM ANNE T. SULLIVAN As the fall 2012 semester ends and we enter 2013, I marvel at the fact that next September will mark our department s 20th year! It seems like yesterday that we were all tooling around in the attic of the old Champlain Building. Could any alums, faculty, or visitors forget those steeply sloped ceilings? We were just happy to no longer share the windowless lecture rooms on the 12th floor with the Interior Architecture students. When we eventually moved to the 10th floor of the newly named Sharp Anne T. Sullivan Building, we were overjoyed to have our own studios and a real resource room. We ve come a long way, baby! Take the opportunity to visit our new space and hear current students present their thesis topics on Friday evening, April 19, 2013 here in our new department at 116 South Michigan Avenue on the 15th floor. And as a special call to our alumni, let s make a commitment in 2013 to start an official SAIC HPres Alumni Association. I welcome you to me if you d be willing to serve on the first Board of Directors. You d be involved in establishing it as a not-for-profit and setting the pace for its future. What better way to commemorate our 20th anniversary than to create something that will sustain us into the future! Sincerely, Anne T. Sullivan Director MS Historic Preservation Program

SPRING SPEAKER Please join us on Thursday, February 28, at 5:30 p.m. in the SAIC Ballroom (112 South Michigan Avenue) for The Atomic Wild Wild West, a lecture given by our departmental guest Robert Chattel, principal of Chattel, Inc. Historic Preservation Consultants with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He will discuss issues facing modern resources and cover two of his projects in depth: the Neon Museum Visitor Center in Las Vegas, Nevada (La Concha Motel lobby, Paul Revere Williams architect, 1961; relocated 2007 and rehabilitated 2012) and the Stuart Company building in Pasadena, California (Stuart Pharmaceutical Plant and Office Building, Edward Durell Stone architect, 1958; rehabilitated in 2011). Stuart Company building in Pasadena, California DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION Do you know anyone who might be interested in obtaining a Master of Science in Historic Preservation? The submission deadline for applications is February 1. Please direct them to the admissions requirements on our website. APT DIGITIZING PROJECT The Association for Preservation Technology is currently working on a project to digitize trade catalogs and upload them to archive.org. Canadian students began to scan the catalogs more than a year ago, and the scans were then given to SAIC HPres students Kelsey Shipton, Fleming Garner, Alissa Hahn, Natalia Kwiatowska, Erica Ruggiero, and Megan Lydon to create complete PDF files of the catalogs. So far, more than 2,000 trade catalogs have been scanned and uploaded to archive.org. LUNCHTIME LECTURES Lunchtime lectures are an opportunity for current students to connect with alumni who are working in the field of historic preservation. This fall, speakers included: Beth Johnson (MS 2006), who is on the staff of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks; Jennifer Fritz Williams (MS 2007), formerly the preservation planner with the City of Elgin; and Faith Foley Rackrow (MS 2007) of the Historic Chicago Bungalow Initiative. Similarly, Kristen McSparren Ottesen (MS 1996) and her colleagues at Rosin Preservation in Kansas City stopped by our department in early December to present their firm s work and talk more about historic preservation in Missouri and throughout the Midwest. If you d like to come speak to our students about your work and career path, please contact Charlie Pipal cpipal@saic.edu.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION (HPO) FIELD TRIPS This past spring the HPO group went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to explore the architecture of the city. Students stayed downtown in a historic hotel and enjoyed the museum, an architecture tour, and the good food and libation the city has to offer. Next spring the HPO is planning a site visit Springfield, Illinois, where they plan to tour Frank Lloyd Wright s Dana Thomas House, the Lincoln Home, and the Lincoln Library, as well as some historic sites between Chicago and Springfield. Second Year HPres Students at the Milwaukee Art Museum HPRES SECOND YEARS VISIT WISCONSIN USONIAN HOME Donna Weiss (1997) explains the restoration process to our students at the Adelman House. The Building Conservation class visited the Adelman House, a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian Home in Fox Point, Wisconsin, this fall. The national register concrete block home is in the midst of being restored, giving the students a chance to see how to properly conserve historic wood finishes, historic windows, and how to adapt a historic home to receive modern heating and cooling. Faculty member Neal Vogel is the general contractor, and alumna Donna Weiss is serving on the team as project manager with Marion Construction. Vogel, Weiss, and Justin Racinowski, architect with the Kubala Washatko group welcomed us to the site with tours and demonstrations. Tony Kartsonas, paint conservator, described the process of window conservation to the students. The highlight of the day was a hands-on demonstration of epoxy repair methods for wood windows, lead by a representative from Abatron. Happily employed 2012 graduates Kelsey Shipton and Kristen Sundquist Martin at work on the construction crew at the Adelman House.

Current students Kerryann Kanch, Sarah Horton, Elizabeth Fisher and Elissa Del Bel Belluz get their hands dirty (sorta!) with wood epoxy consolidants. HPRES CLASS OF 2013 Congratulations to the Historic Preservation class of 2013: Elissa Del Bel Belluz, Saad AlGhamdi, Michelle Chircop, Sarah Biggers, Elizabeth Fisher, Tricia Baum, Kerryann Kanch, Kris Hartzell, Sarah Horton, and Fleming Garner. Back row: Elissa Del Bel Belluz, Saad AlGhamdi, Michelle Chircop, Sarah Biggers, Elizabeth Fisher, Tricia Baum, Kerryann Kanch; Front row: Kris Hartzell, Sarah Horton, Fleming Garner. RECENT GRAD HELPS RETURN STATUE TO RIGHTFUL OWNER Recent graduate Deb Carey helped return a 1880s bronze figurine to its home at the Osborne Apartment House in Manhattan. Jacob Holzer, who was the topic of Carey s thesis this past year, signed the statue, which had been missing for nine decades. Carey came across the statue on ebay and promptly notified the Osborne Apartment House on the whereabouts of their missing newel post figurine. The residents of Osborne and friends raised the $9,500 dollars needed to have the winning bid. The statue now resides in the vestibule of the lobby of the Osborne Apartment House. FACULTY NEWS Don Kalec received the honor of emeritus during the 2012 graduation ceremony. Kalec has been teaching the History and Theory of Historic Preservation class since This fall semester, Jim Peters began teaching the graduate-level Preservation Planning course at SAIC. The class had previously been taught by Vince Michael, who is now the chief conservation officer at the Global Heritage Fund in Palo Alto, California. Peters has been active in Chicago preservation circles for more than 20 years. A member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, he holds a master s in Preservation Planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana. He has an undergraduate degree in architecture from Texas A&M University. From 1992 to 2000, Peters worked for the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, where he was the staff director. Among the accomplishments of his tenure was the publication of the Chicago Historic Resources Survey and designation of more than 50 landmark buildings and districts, including Historic Michigan Boulevard, Motor Row,

and Wrigley Field. He joined Landmarks Illinois in 2001, where he served as executive director until retiring this past year. In addition to SAIC, he teaches in the Urban Planning program at the University of Illinois at Chicago while working as an independent consultant to communities and local historical societies. From 2000 to 2005, Jim taught the graduate-level Preservation Planning studio at SAIC, where he originated the ongoing Recent Past Architectural Survey of suburban Cook County. One of his classes won an award from the American Planning Association (APA) for its preservation plan for Glen Ellyn. This fall, Jim won the Distinguished Service Award from the APA s Illinois Chapter. Neal Vogel and Restoric worked with HPres alumna and Roger Brown Study Collection (RBSC) curator Lisa Stone, completing the restoration of the historic storefront and apartment doors at 1926 North Halsted Street, Chicago, Illinois. At nearly 125 years old, the storefront doors and the apartment door were perhaps the most used and abused element of SAIC s house museum and special collection. Having been opened and closed by countless people over the years, the doors had lost much structural integrity and were just plain worn out. The building had settled unevenly, both horizontally and laterally, and the north door had become almost comically out of square. Facing east, the surfaces had taken the full force of the weather and were seriously deteriorated. The restoration project was undertaken by Neal Vogel of Restoric LLC with master carpenter Andy De LaRosa and Steve De LaRosa and painted surfaces by Anthony Kartsonas. ALUMNI NEWS Lynda Frost (MS 1998) is the project manager for the Chesapeake & Central Appalachians Field Office Trust for Public Land. Maura Pilcher (MS 2006) is the vice president of the Czech Village/New Bohemia Urban Main Street board and assistant director of Brucemore, which is a National Trust historic home. Colleen Rogers Aivazian (MS 2007) had a baby boy, Liam, in April Jenny "Reep" Pruden (MS 2008) was hired in April as the Executive Director of the Czech Village/New Bohemia Urban Main Street in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Greg Rainka (MS 2008) is the historic preservation specialist for Mead and Hunt. Andrea "Trickey" Rainka (MS 2008) is working for Vinculum Inc., a telecom management and consulting firm. Andrea and husband Greg are expecting a baby boy to be due on New Year s Eve. They were married in May of Vicki Birenberg (MS 2009) is the CLG coordinator at the Kentucky State Historic Preservation Office. Sarah Tietje (MS 2012) is the administrative assistant for AIADO and HPres at SAIC. We are looking for contact information for these former students.
