SULLIVAN Spring 2012 delivers a new beginning for our department. Not only are we pleased to announce that the Historic Preservation department has relocated to a new space, but this newsletter marks the first time we ve produced a spring edition of the Historic Preservation Newsletter a tradition we d like to uphold! Our department has been in the news lately, with interviews on WBEZ Anne T. Sullivan (public radio), newspaper articles, and mentions on WTTW (PBS). Even Dwell magazine has featured the work of one of our thesis students. We are proud of the accomplishments of our students, alumni, and faculty, and we hope you enjoy reading about their achievements. Happy spring! Anne T. Sullivan Director MS Historic Preservation Program MOVE TO NEW HPRES DEPARTMENT SPACE Professor Pipal and HPRES student Tricia Baum in the new student lounge During this past winter break, the Historic Preservation department moved from its home on the 10th floor of the Sharp Building (37 South Wabash) to new quarters at 116 South Michigan. Director Anne Sullivan and faculty member Charlie Pipal coordinated the move with help from Program Assistants Kelsey Shipton and Tricia Baum and student workers from the AIADO office. Together, the team filled 150 boxes with the department s library of periodicals and texts, collection of materials samples, conservation equipment, documentation tools, and more. A week later, they unpacked and arranged everything in the new space. The department now truly has its own space: a private wing on the 15th and 16th floors of the 116 South Michigan building, designed specifically for our purposes. The two floors have an open plan and are connected by an internal staircase. The upper floor, which is the top floor of the building, holds a lecture room, the faculty offices, and the first-year drafting studio,

2 which has a double-height ceiling with skylights. Downstairs are the resource room, student lounge, computer lab, and the building materials lab, which is also used as a lecture space. The faculty and students have settled right in to the new space and are enjoying its comfortable, open feel! Fifteenth floor lecture space and material lab More about 116 South Michigan: Originally called the Municipal Courts Building, it was built to house temporary courtrooms while City Hall was being rebuilt in the early 20th century. The firm Jenney, Mundie, and Jensen designed the original 12 stories, completed in 1906, as well as the 1912 addition of the top four stories (including the new Historic Preservation space). The building later became known as the Lake View Building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in Historic view of the building. Image courtesy of Dan O'Brien ALUMNI RECEPTION IN NEW SPACE APRIL 20 On Friday, April 20, 2012 the department will be hosting the second-year thesis presentations from 5:00 6:30 p.m. A housewarming reception will be held immediately following from 6:30 9:00 p.m. Alumni are invited to attend both events and help christen the new space. Sixteenth floor studio, site of reception STUDENTS IN THE NEWS This year s Preservation Planning Studio class, taught by professor Charlie Pipal, was featured in the news for their work on the Recent Past Survey. The survey, which is a continuing project every year for second-year graduate students in the Historic Preservation program, seeks to document all mid-century ( ) nonresidential buildings in Cook County. Three municipalities were surveyed this fall: Cicero, Berwyn, and Oak Park. The work completed in Cicero was featured on 91.5 WBEZ Public Radio and can be heard on the WBEZ website. The work in Berwyn was also featured in My Suburban Life, a news publication in Berwyn. Congratulations to Charlie

3 Pipal and his students! HPO CELEBRATES ITS FIRST BIRTHDAY This semester marks the first birthday of the SAIC Historic Preservation Organization (HPO). A group run by and for the students of the Historic Preservation program, HPO sponsored a trip to Dubuque, Iowa last fall and has a variety of programs and trips in the works for the upcoming semester. HPO aims to provide opportunities for students beyond just curricular activities. A Facebook page has been established for the group, and alumni and faculty are encouraged to join. Our latest count is 124 members! The page has been a great place for members to post job opportunities, activities and events in the field, news updates, and much more. You can join the group by searching "SAIC Historic Preservation Organization" on Facebook and requesting to join. HISTORIC PRESERVATION SPRING GUEST LECTURERS On Wednesday, April 18, at 6:00 p.m., Dr. Pance Velkov will present the film Makedonida Preserving the Sacred Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Macedonia (2011) and lead a discussion after. Image courtesy of Pance Velkov The film focuses on the activities of the Makedonida foundation in the conservation of medieval sacred sites in the Republic of Macedonia. Due to political, social, and economic changes in Macedonia since the break up of Yugoslavia 20 years ago, the holy churches, monasteries, and mosques do not receive the attention they deserve. As a result, some of the most important sacred sites in the country are practically abandoned, as is the case with the 14th-century church of Saint George in Nagoricane, a world masterpiece of Byzantine art located just 50 miles from the capital Skopje. Others, like the Mustafa Pasha mosque built in 1492, and the church of Holy Mother of God Peribleptos in Ohrid are undergoing poorly managed conservation projects. Dr. Velkov is the author of Skopje: Seven Monuments of Art and Architecture, which catalogs some of the most important monuments of art and architecture in Skopje, Macedonia. Velkov is an active teacher, writer, and preservationist with expertise in Macedonian architecture and preservation activities in cooperation with NGOs. Image courtesy of Pance Velkov Previously, the Historic Preservation Department sponsored a talk by Kateryna Goncharova on February 8. Goncharova is a Senior Scientific Researcher from the Ukrainian State Research and Project Institute, and she spoke on the preservation of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Ukraine. The presentation included Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, St. Sophia Cathedral,

4 Sudak fortress, and other sites in Ukraine. Her discussion provided analyses of problems arising in the preservation of these architectural complexes and illustrated approaches and concrete solutions that were implemented or have been projected for the sustainable development of each historical site. New Facullty William Tyre: Historic Site Management, Fall 2012 William Tyre is the Executive Director and Curator of Glessner House Museum, a National Historic Landmark located in Chicago s Prairie Avenue Historic District. A 1999 graduate of SAIC's Historic Preservation program, Tyre served as comptroller for the Society of Architectural Historians and as manager of programs for its headquarters, the Charnley-Persky House Museum, for eight years before coming to Glessner in October He is the author of Chicago s Historic Prairie Avenue, published in 2008 by Arcadia Publishing, which was an outgrowth of his master s thesis After the Ball is Over: The Decline and Rebirth of Chicago s Historic Prairie Avenue. Since 2007, he has served on the board of directors of Friends of Historic Second Church, a nonprofit formed to oversee the restoration and interpretation of the landmark Second Presbyterian Church on South Michigan Avenue. He recently moved to Pullman, where he is restoring a manager s rowhouse in Arcade Row. Amy Lamb Woods: co-teaching Building Diagnostics, Spring 2012 Amy Lamb Woods s background combines architecture, historic preservation, and civil engineering materials. She works in the field of forensic engineering of building materials. Her primary interest includes projects involving the investigation and repair of historic concrete or other cementitious materials. She is very involved with the Association for Preservation Technology and the International Concrete Repair Institute. Forensic engineering and the challenge of restoring and repairing our built world naturally cross disciplines to help preserve our environment. STUDENT INTERNSHIPS A number of students have held internships this past semester: Tricia Baum, first-year, is interning at MacRostie Historic Advisors where she researching and writing Part 1s and National Register nominations. Sarah Biggers, first-year, is interning with the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation. Elizabeth Fisher, first-year, is a research intern at the City of Chicago Department of Buildings. Kris Hartzell, first-year, is interning at Landmarks Illinois where she is working on its 10 Most Endangered Historic Places list for 2012.

5 Dan O Brien, second-year, is a research intern for Geoffrey Baer s Ask Geoffrey segment on WTTW Channel 11. Christen Sundquist, second-year, is also a research intern for Geoffrey Baer s Ask Geoffrey segment. She is currently researching WTTW s future PBS documentary, "10 Buildings that Changed America." STUDENT WINS MONEY TO HELP SAVE BURNHAM AND ROOT DEPOT Keokuk Union Depot Congratulations go out to second-year student Christen Sundquist and the City of Keokuk, Iowa for the prize of $10,000 that will go toward the renovation of the Keokuk Union Depot! Sundquist entered the depot, her thesis subject, into a contest sponsored by Dwell magazine. The contest, Rethinking Preservation, put 118 preservation projects up for popular vote, and the depot was recently chosen as winner. Designed by Holabird and Root, the depot was purchased recently by the City of Keokuk, and plans are underway to restore and adaptively reuse the beautiful building. Sundquist s thesis topic is to find an economically viable new use for the building. Congratulations, Christen!
