1 60 Smith Street, Cleveland, Qld Ph: September 2018 Volunteers Day Out By Bruce Smith Several graves nearly 150 years old, as well as buildings, machinery and artefacts are just some of the attractions at the Gold Coast Historical Museum at Surfers Paradise. Bundall sugar mill operated near the museum from 1872 until 1888 and family members of those who worked at the mill have been buried with marked graves. WHAT S ON From 20 Oct New art exhibition by Beverley Teske The Real Cost of WW1 Honouring Australian Soldiers Killed in WW1 6 November Melbourne Cup am to 3pm 8 December Volunteers Christmas Party - 2pm 15 December Christmas by Starlight The museum, run by a small group of dedicated volunteers, was opened in 1972 and was believed to be a former Aboriginal gathering place with middens. The heritage listed grounds of one and one quarter acres include six separate buildings surrounded by attractive littoral forest and gardens planted with ancient native vegetation. Thirty-two of our volunteers enjoyed a visit to this museum on a sunny 10 October under the Redland Museum Volunteer Reward and Recognition Scheme. We were made welcome by the museum s volunteers who gave us an informative talk followed by a delicious morning tea. The historical collection includes: the Pacific Ocean Cable Station equipment which was in operation from 1902; the Paula Stafford Bikini Collection worn in the 1950s; part of the wreckage of the Scottish Prince which was wrecked off Stradbroke Island in1887; a large Aboriginal artefact collection; some 2,500 objects, 1,500 photographs of the Gold Coast area, archival records including old news-papers, maps, 1 P a g e R e d l a n d M u s e u m i s s u p p o r t e d b y R e d l a n d C i t y C o u n c i l

The museum also includes: the Vincent Sheldon Artist Studio, which is heritage listed and was originally situated at Broadbeach; a replica of early settler Robert Veivers (1861) cottage, built in 1976; and buildings housing machinery and tools from the farming, sugar and timber industries from the mid-1800s. We then had a leisurely and good value lunch at the Southport RSL, before being returned to Cleveland by Blue Bus. See more photos in the Gallery. 3 Exhibition Clare Loveband s art exhibition Mangroves of Moreton Bay captures the naturally wonderful flora of different species of mangroves. The exhibition was opened on 16th August by Deputy Mayor, Lance Hewlett. Thank you from Hamilton Probus Hamilton Probus visited your museum yesterday [20 September] and were so impressed. The displays and enthusiastic guides were amazing. Some are planning a return visit with children. Thank you for opening our eyes as to what is available so close to Brisbane. Leona Kyling Soirée Councillor Peter Mitchel and Kerry Youdale from Placemakers Redlands Cleveland organized on 5 October a celebration of the life and achievements of VIOLET LEONA KYLING ( ), a Redland pioneer and community visionary. Leona was the granddaughter of early settlers, John and Elizabeth Sherrin. Community organizations and restaurants contributed to the event. 5 Next Exhibition The Real Cost of War WW1 Series is an exhibition by Redland artist Beverley Teske (pictured below) honouring all the Australian soldiers killed in World War 1. It includes three murals and a floor installation together with items from our own collection. The murals feature hand-drawn crosses each representing a life lost during WW1. The exhibition was opened on 20 October and will continue until Remembrance Day on 11 November. Congratulations Gordon Our second nominee for 2018 for the Greg Cook Volunteer Award is Gordon Davidson. This award is organised by Volunteering Redlands. Winners are announced in December in conjunction with Volunteering Redlands International Volunteer Day Expo. This will complete the museum s participation in the 100 th anniversary commemoration of the conflict. We collaborated with the Redland City Council Library and U3A to collect memorabilia and photographs on loan from Redlanders from which the Library produced the recently published book Remembering Them. The museum presented the exhibition Redlanders Mementos from the Front in April 2015 (see The Digger and Waler exhibit was featured as an appropriate introduction to the exhibition. During the commemorative period, Sam Smith created the diorama of two Australian soldiers taking a rest between gunfire in a trench at Quinn s Post or Courtney s Post on the Gallipoli Peninsula. In more recent displays, Sam provided uniforms and memorabilia from his personal collection. Right: Gary White, from Bendigo Bank, presented the certificate to Gordon Davidson. Redfest This was the first year that the museum has been involved with Redfest. Around 2400 people visited the museum during this event on 8-9 September. Although it was a rainy day, the parade was enjoyed by all. See photos in the Gallery on page 7. Channel 7 did a feature on Redfest at the museum on 26 August. Presenter Laurel Edwards interviewed Leanne Morris, a former Strawberry Queen.
