2 Render of Pavilion 2017, designed by Francis Kéré SERPENTINE GALLERIES Two unique Grade II listed contemporary art galleries in Kensington Gardens, the Serpentine Gallery and the Serpentine Sackler Gallery present eight exhibitions per year. Complementing the seasonal exhibitions programme is the acclaimed Pavilion commission a temporary structure designed by a leading international architect who has not previously completed a building in England which is sited on the Serpentine Gallery s lawn each summer. Open to the public Tuesday Sunday 10am 6pm, the spaces can be hired privately for breakfast and evening events, or full day events on a Monday. 3 2018 EXHIBITIONS SERPENTINE GALLERY Wade Guyton 29 September February 2018 American artist Wade Guyton (born 1972) was born in Hammond, Indiana and grew up in Lake City Tennessee. Installation image of Wade Guyton, Das New Yorker Atelier, Museum Brandhorst, 2017 The exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery presents a new body of work, all of which has been completed in the past two years. It focuses on three different kinds of image production: photographs taken on the artist s camera phone of his studio; screenshots of web pages on the artist s phone; and details of bitmap files. Together these images track Guyton s environment, not so much as a revelation as a deadpan affirmation of the potential to use anything as subject matter. IAN CHENG 6 March 28 May 2018 Emissaries Guide - Narrative Agents and Wildlife, 2017 Ian Cheng (b. 1984, USA) explores the nature of mutation and the capacity of humans to relate to change. Drawing on principles of video game design, improvisation and cognitive science, Cheng has developed live simulations : living virtual ecosystems that begin with basic programmed properties, but are left to self-evolve without authorial intent or end. His simulations model the dynamics of imaginative organisms and objects, but with the unforgiving causality found in nature. What results is a cascade of emergent behaviours the artist can manage but never truly control. Cheng likens his simulations to a neurological gym : a format for viewers to deliberately exercise feelings of confusion, anxiety and cognitive dissonance that accompany the experience of unrelenting change. 4 2018 EXHIBITIONS SERPENTINE SACKLER GALLERY Rose Wylie 30 November February 2018 This winter, the Serpentine Galleries is delighted to present the work by British artist Rose Wylie. Her large scale paintings are generous and free-spirited, and while they do share connections with work by other artists, they have a distinct tone and attitude. Courtesy by the artist and UNION Gallery, London Wylie s exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery will bring together a diverse range of paintings and drawings that will give a comprehensive overview of the various themes and sources of inspirations in her work, including film notes, (female) celebrities, art history, painters and everyday observations. Sondra Perry 6 March 20 May 2018 Artist Sondra Perry (b. 1986, USA) foregrounds the tools of digital production in her videos and performances to reflect critically on new technologies of representation and to remobilise their potential. Her work revolves around black American history and ways in which technology shapes identities, often with her own personal history as a point of departure. The exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery will be Perry s first solo presentation of her work in Europe and continues the Serpentine s engagement with her practice, which began with her moving image intervention for the 2016 Park Nights series. 5 SERPENTINE PAVILION SEVENTEEN YEARS OF WORLD-CLASS ARCHITECTURE SERPENTINE PAVILIONS Serpentine Pavilion 2017 Designed by Francis Kéré Kéré Architecture Photography 2017 John Offenbach Each summer the Serpentine invites an internationally known architect to create their first built structure in England. The immediacy of the process a maximum of six months from invitation to completion provides a unique model for commissioning architecture. Since its launch in 2000, the annual Pavilion has become one of the most anticipated events in the global cultural calendar and a leading visitor attraction during London s summer season of culture. Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist and CEO Yana Peel select the architect with advisors David Adjaye and Richard Rogers. The Serpentine Pavilion can be hired for private events alongside the Serpentine Gallery between June and October for a maximum of 500 guests standing.
