5 photo: photo: Villiot-Rapée Apartments Rue Villiot Paris The project embraces new concepts of living together primarily based on generous outdoor spaces, both private (balconies) and communal (floor area), as well as on an extrapolation of the advantages of detached houses, which have now disappeared forever from Paris - having one's own floor space and thus being rooted in the soil The starting point of the project, the ground, accompanies and moulds itself to the natural level, twists and transforms itself, hosts different disciplines, guides and accompanies residents, visitors and passers-by - and makes it into a home Each level and each flat has a different floor lending itself to different practices and uses Rather than being like a balcony, a loggia (or a terrace), which can be seen and used on a daily basis, winds its way around the outside of the flats and gives residents the feeling that they live outdoors This 'poured garden' creates close ties to the building's external environment photo: Sergio Grazia 2011 Hamonic + Masson Nazar 5

8 photo: UNESCO photo: Nazar Leskiw UNESCO Place de Fontenoy Paris Inaugurated on 3 November 1958, the Headquarters of UNESCO is the most international building in Paris both in terms of the membership of the Organization it houses, currently standing at 186 Member States (1 July 1997) and in terms of its construction, for it is the combined work of architects of three nationalities : Marcel Breuer of the United States of America, Pier Luigi Nervi of Italy and Bernard Zehrfuss of ; selected by an International Committee of five : Lucio Costa of Brazil, Walter Gropius of the United States of America, Charles Le Corbusier of, Sven Markelius of Sweden and Ernesto Rogers of Italy ; the American architect, Eero Saarinen was also consulted and Eugene E Callison, an American engineer directed the construction site The Y=shaped administrative building, nicknamed the "three-pointed star", fits harmoniously in Place de Fontenoy alongside the Ecole Militaire photo: Jacqueline Poggi 1977 Main designer, Marcel Breuer Bernard Zehrfuss Pier Luigi Nervi Nazar 8

9 photo: Stéphane Chalmeau photo: Daniel Rousselot Boucicaut Mixed Social Program Rue de la Convention 60-64, Paris Situated on the old site of the Boucicaut Hospital in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, the project is made of two symmetrical plots on Rue de la Convention: the plot A can be found at the angle with Rue de Lourmel and plot B is at the angle formed with Rue de Lacordaire The program is a pilot-project for the town of Paris, integrating workshops, commerce, medical residences for aged people, a day-care psychiatric centre and a shelter for abused women, all to be found in the first four levels of the plots The last three floors are occupied by social housing Playing with zinc and brick façades, the two buildings dialogue with what was kept from the old hospital and the roofs of the buildings around them The rhythm of the openings, the quality of the materials used, the vegetation and the suspended footbridges manage to create architecture that takes the work integration far beyond its formal expression, giving it a social sense and relating it more to the people it houses photo: Daniel Rousselot Project is not public! 10 Maison de Tristan Tzara Avenue Junot Paris The modern-style house was built in 1926 by Austrian architect Adolf Loos for the poet & writer Tristan Tzara founding father of Dadaism and his wife, the painter, Knitson The rigidly functionalist Maison Tristan Tzara, built in Montmartre, was designed following Tzara's specific requirements and decorated with samples of African art It was Loos' only major contribution in his Parisian years Project is not public! 1926 Adolf Loos Tristan Tzara cost photo: Costin Constantin 10

11 photo: Julien Lanoo photo: Julien Lanoo Student Residence RIVP Rue Pajol Paris The main idea was to meet the challenge of using a single architectural gesture to provide urban integration and optimised comfort for the future occupants while, at the same time, creating a friendly and informal complex The building's position directed the research towards the development of lively elevations providing views through to the center of the plot and an appreciation of this inner space The creation of two clefts and the transparency of the ground floor level resulting from the bike park meet this ambition, defining a project reminiscent of the buildings to be found in Paris' inner suburbs The project is based on the party walls defining the different building heights This movement creates a square central courtyard, providing the project with its key element The circulation system is very clear: 4 vertical circulation points on the 4 corners of the plot All circulation areas are naturally lit to allow the landings to become places where people can meet one another photo: Julien Lanoo Project is not public! 13 photo: Luc Boegly photo: Luc Boegly Daunay housing Impasse Daunay Paris This large block of 8 flats merges smoothly into the heterogeneity of the Impasse Daunay cul-de-sac Facing the street, the textured glass skin covering the facades pays discreet homage to the glass walls of the artists studios in this Père Lachaise neighbourhood The choice of glass, used here for the facade covering, parapets, transparent partitions for common areas or simply as windows, has an aesthetic appeal in its uniformity of material and stark simplicity in keeping with the project s general low key approach: just 8 housing units in a little cul-de-sac On the courtyard side, the retified pine cladding extends the ambiance of the neighbouring condominium s garden The orange colour of the communal areas has the effect of highlighting the glass s dominant hard characteristic The systematic nature of this monochrome look is counter-balanced by the vivid brightness of the common areas In the street, the colour is relatively unobtrusive and is visible only in the entrance photo: Luc Boegly Project is not public! 2009 Atelier du Pont MI_MOA 13

15 photo: goa photo: goa Pavillon Suisse Boulevard Jourdan Paris Cité universitaire was founded in 1921 to provide accommodation and support for foreign students in Paris, with a number of residential pavilions endowed by different national communities The pavilion adheres to Le Corbusier's 'five points of architecture', but with a number of developments since the Villa Savoye The free façade and horizontal window have become a continuous glazed curtain wall, on the south side of the building (above) The pilotis have developed from thin columns to six massive reinforced concrete 'dog-bones' or 'thighs' with their characteristic figure-of-eight cross section to withstand winds While the client accepted the student rooms being raised in mid air, the public spaces were required to be on the ground The plan accommodates them in a separate block sitting on the earth, its curvaceous form contrasting with the simple slab of the student accommodation (text from wwwgalinskycom) photo: goa 1930, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Le Corbusier goa Committee of Swiss Universities & Station RER B: Cité Universitaire Bus: 67, 21 and T3 15

16 photo: goa photo: goa Cité de Refuge Rue Cantagrel Paris The Salvation Army Refuge in Paris was Le Corbusier's first opportunity to create accommodation for the urban poor The compact site provided the chance for a radical approach both to bringing in light and space and to laying out the entrance halls to accommodate the Salvation Army's reception process The core of Le Corbusier's design was the dormitory slab with a sheer glass curtain wall Critical to the success of this south-facing glass wall was to have been a technologically ambitious system of double glazing and air conditioning ('respiration exacte') These were never built as intended, and the sheer skin of the wall was lost to Le Corbusier's trademark brises soleils later on in an attempt to prevent the inhabitants from overheating In the spirit of the free plan, Le Corbusier took the entrance hall components out of the dormitory block, constructing a geometric pathway through separate reception buildings outside (text from wwwgalinskycom) photo: goa 1929, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Le Corbusier goa Armée du Salut (Salvation Army) Telephone: Take the RER to Bibliothèque François Mitterand, and choose the Rue du Chevalaret exit Walk south along Rue du Chevalaret, and at the first junction turn backwards right up rue Cantagrel The Refuge is a few meters up on your right 16

24 photo: Georges Fessy photo: Georges Fessy Ministere de la Culture Rue Saint-Honoré Paris The aim of this project was to regroup on a single site all the services of the Ministry of Culture, previously dispersed over 17 different locations around the city Francis Soler resolved the major constraints -disparity in dates and indifferent architectural style of the two existing buildings- into elements of unity and identity This unity is omnipresent in the internal space planning: the two buildings have been remodelled in their substance to require the obtained density, optimize work spaces and interconnect the different floor levels The other unifying element is purely architectural In the manner of Christo, Soler has wrapped the old buildings, walls and roof included, in a continuous organic-weave mesh of steel lace Without entirely effacing underlying differences, this stainless steel veil imparts continuity to the disparate volumes It hangs like a loose net detached from the elevations, its appearance changing in phase with the sun, shadows, day and night photo: Georges Fessy Public access unknown! 2004 Main designer, Interior architect Landscape designer General consultant Francis Soler Frédéric Druot Michel Desvignes Patrick Blanc Ministry of Culture Xavier_Gonzalez 24

34 photo: Luc Boegly photo: Luc Boegly Tetris rue du Nord Paris The project is part of an urban program aimed at regenerating underprivileged neighbourhoods in Northern Paris Nine residences and three artists' studios were built on three narrow plots The project was shaped by our intention to stay in harmony with the neighbourhood's scale and density while maximizing space and daylight available to future residents Perfect alignment with existing buildings and identical façade treatment erases the difference between the old and the new The «commonplace» exterior is balanced by the singularity of living rooms Each of the 3 buildings has one apartment per floor The staggered arrangement of day and night zones allows for the difference in ceiling heights: 3,40 m for the living room and 2,60 for the bedroom Each individual residence is marked by a large timber-framed bow window highlighting the increased height of double-aspect living rooms The principle equally applies to apartments and atéliers, as nowadays home and workspace tend to merge Floor area/size m² General consultant Moussafir es SIBAT SIEMP MAA photo: Luc Boegly 34
