2 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst University Library UBU Heidelberglaan CS Utrecht This black box is both praised and hated Let s hear the architect: It is a place where people can work in a concentrated fashion, but also one where they can meet others without the need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the building radiates The book depots divide the space into zones interconnected by stairs and slopes All in black figured concrete on which a partly double-glazed facade to which a silk-screened figurative pattern has been applied in order to let natural light in Based on the idea that silent communication is important in a building where there is hardly any talking, the atmosphere had emphasis on creating a sense of security That was essential for choosing a black interior A light, shiny floor provides enough reflection to illuminate the books and white tables make it possible to read The bar, lounge, reception, auditorium, desks, are all fitted with red rubber, thereby breaking down the mono-functionality of the library program m² Wiel Arets s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst mo-fr: sa: su: From Utrecht Central Station take bus 11 or 12 towards "De Uithof", the university campus 2

3 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Basket Bar Genevelaan CC Utrecht The Utrecht University Campus, according to its best tradition, gives birth to another provocative and irreverent building: the BasketBar, which consists of a flat basket ground over a grand café room, as 15 x 15 meters flat extension of the previous bookstore, just on the back of the OMA's Educatorium In the early 90's, OMA prepared the master plan for the renewed University Campus, which encompasses a lot of Dutch Second Modernity's exemplary buildings such as Mecanoo's Faculty of Economics and Management, Neutelings Riedijk's Minnaert Building, UN Studio's NMR Laboratory and OMA's Educatorium All these buildings are spread on a large site called De Uithof at the edge of the city, hosting about among staff and students The BasketBar, together with the Educatorium, represented the only extensive meeting place for all this population, until the large black library was built photo: Naomi Schiphorst m² NL s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi Mo - Fri from 10:30 till late Weekends are for arranged groups 3

10 photo: Pedro Maia photo: Pedro Maia Bridges Parkwijk Leidsche Rijn Zandweg AA Utrecht The master plan for Leidsche Rijn was developed by Maxwan between 93 and '95 With houses it is one of the largest urban schemes in Dutch history The scheme features a large network of canals that are part of the sustainable water-management plan Some 100 bridges connect the road network over these canals Maxwan designed a new family of 16 bridges for Leidsche Rijn These bridges hardly have to bridge: the canals are not wide and are not accessible to big boats Maxwan decided not to make an issue out of the span, but to rather treat each bridge as a piece of public space with a special gift: to be above water Because a good road implies efficiency and luxury of connection - for all users - the smoothest links possible were made, curving the sides of the bridge to match the traffic givens on either side of the water 'Ponds' were allowed to appear in the deck of the bridge, where asphalt was not needed The bridges are outlined with mirror-polished stainless steel railings photo: Pedro Maia m², Urban planner Structural engineer Maxwan ABT City of Utrecht calahan 24h 10

11 photo: Ernst Moritz photo: Dirk Verwoerd Rietveld Schröderhuis Prins Hendriklaan Utrecht A visit to the Rietveld Schröder House remains a fascinating experience This house is the only building ever realized on the basis of the architectural principles of De Stijl Typical features are the use of the Stijl colours red, blue and yellow, in combination with white, grey and black, the relation between interior and exterior and the unity between the free-standing pieces of furniture and the fitted parts of the interior According to Rietveld and Schröder one had to have an active attitude to life For them too living in a home is a conscious act The furnishing of the house reflects this conviction The occupant has to perform a transaction for every activity: the bathroom is created by opening out a wall, while the sleeping areas could be screened off with sliding walls, and privacy was obtained by placing shutters in front of the windows The house is literally a machine for living in photo: Jannes Linders 1924 Gerrit Rietveld Truus Schröder MI_MOA On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can visit the Rietveld Schröderhuis The house can only be visited with a tour of max 10 people You can reserve a place in the tour by sending an to rhreserveringen[at]centraalmuseumnl There is a special Rietveld bus that leaves from the Centraal Museum at 1145, 1245, 1345 and 1445 hr It takes you to all Rietveld-designs and back to the Centraal Museum (address: Nicolaaskerkhof 10, Utrecht) 11

17 photo: Daria Scagliola & Stijn Brakkee photo: Daria Scagliola & Stijn Brakkee Smarties Heidelberglaan Utrecht This student housing in the complex of the Utrecht University campus has transformed the Uithof site into a full-fledged campus It will also help relieve the chronic housing shortage for young people in the city of Utrecht Within the line of freestanding buildings the master plan designed by OMA, our block of 380 independent and clustered rooms presents itself as a solitary mass with a 20 metre cantilever The spectacular main concrete supporting structure consists of four slabs that together form a theatrical single table leg The 'leg' and its rocking bench dramatize the main entrance and create an urban rendezvous which distils the encounters and the to-and- from of all those students The colossal mass which rests on the main supporting structure consists of upright slabs penetrated by longitudinal tunnels, producing a building with high flexibility which will be a long-lasting addition to the Uithof Public access unknown! m² Marlies Rohmer SSH Utrecht pkrajewski_pl photo: Daria Scagliola & Stijn Brakkee 17

18 Education Department Padualaan 3584 CH Utrecht The Department of Education (FE) forms the westerly closure of the "kashba-zone" of the Uithof In this hundred-metre-wide strip, buildings bunch-up close together with patios and rooflights providing daylight penetration The colourful west façade gives the HU a face towards the city, makes the building scale-less and abstract, while also alluding to the speed of the traffic racing past The façade is an expression of the occupants and their diverse activities, a metaphor for the HU's multifaceted community photo: Ideen dom m² Ector Hoogstad en Hogeschool Utrecht MI_MOA 18
