photo: Arthur Bagen photo: Arthur Bagen Retail space and student housing Steenweg Steenweg JL Utrecht The Steenweg is one of the oldest streets in the historical city centre of Utrecht The existing property with facades facing the Steenweg and the two alleyways, Massegast and Hekelsteeg, was one of the few properties on the Steenweg not considered to be a monument The property was in bad condition due to a lack of maintenance and had very low ceilings, making the property difficult to let As a condition for the demolition, the municipality required that a "new monument" be built in its place The building lines and the gutter heights of the new building for the retail space and the student housing are the same as those of the original buildings, subtly partitioning the main building and the outbuilding The rhythm of the window openings follows this partitioning and is based on the division of a classical facade Where the building has a classical form language, a modern materialisation and detailing is applied photo: Arthur Bagen 2014 Dreessen Willemse en DreessenWillemseen 6

photo: René de Wit photo: René de Wit Meyster's Buiten Everard Meijsterlaan CK Utrecht For the former factory site, Cereol, a unique architectural plan was designed, which is in keeping with its industrial atmosphere The new dwellings located around the protected monument are designed in an industrial style, as if they are part of a single factory complex The synergy between the monument, the architecture and the design of the public realm ensures that the area maintains its historical character photo: René de Wit 2015 Groosman Blauwhoed, Heijmans, VORM Ontwikkeling Groosman 7

photo: John Lewis Marshall photo: John Lewis Marshall Gerrit Rietveld college Eykmanlaan KH Utrecht The design assignment for the Gerrit Rietveld College consists of a new secondary school with sporting facilities for about 1200 pupils, and for a smaller part of social and commercial facilities for the neighbourhood The new building is situated in the leafy district of Tuindorp, at the eastern side of Utrecht The plot is bordered by a public greenbelt, a through-road - the Eykmanlaan with a new parallel road - a slow traffic route, a new residential district, and a railway some distance to the north The basic shape of the design is a "continuous wheel", with a courtyard square in the centre This wheel is the ideal form for flexibility in the school, in which functions can 'move on' In addition, this shape makes it possible to realise a building on a limited plot that nevertheless provides much daylight and fresh air, and besides that leaves enough room for efficient and useful outdoor spaces for the students photo: John Lewis Marshall Project is not public! m² Contractor Structural engineer Services engineer Building physics consultant Atelier PRO Hillen & Roosen IMd Raadgevende Ingenieurs J van Toorenburg bv Peutz Consulting Engineers & Associes Gemeente Utrecht Atelier_PRO 9

photo: Frank Stahl photo: Frank Stahl The Black House Lange Nieuwstraat PG Utrecht In Utrecht's museum quarter, just south of the city centre, there was for many years a vacant plot on the corner of Lange Nieuwstraat and Vrouwjuttenstraat This site in the midst of historical buildings is now occupied by 'Het Zwarte Huis' (The Black House), a complex containing six apartments with semi-underground parking and the new premises of Bakers en The streetscape is characterized by heterogeneous, lot-by-lot development with distinctive corner buildings Het Zwarte Huis is a contemporary addition to the existing urban fabric, in which the notion of 'living above work' has been accentuated by placing the dwellings in a solid volume on top of a glazed podium Lange Nieuwstraat begins at Domplein and runs via a gentle curve to the Centraal Museum The site lies at the mid-point of the curve from where there is an overview of the entire street This unique vantage point is fully exploited with a large bay window photo: Frank Stahl Project is not public! m², Interior architect, Urban planner Bakers en formsache Bakers en bv, Utrecht & Van Bekkum Projecten bv & Hooglanderveen 15

photo: enbureau Hoogeveen photo: enbureau Hoogeveen Axians Ptolemaeuslaan BP Utrecht Simple, bright office building at an attractive but awkward, tight, trapezium-shaped location The main focus in the design brief was to integrate the landscape, parking, basement and parking deck This means the building floats on a green pedestal, and the cars are hidden from view In view of the exceptionally short realization period, the architects have elected to use the CD-20 construction system The impetus for the exceptional geometric facade came from the multiple order won by their firm; this was then simplified and detailed in the design realized The original facade was conceived as a 3D diamond shape, but there was insufficient time for the engineering of this Nevertheless, a highly individual facade has been created, which is striking thanks to its consistent triangular shape photo: enbureau Hoogeveen Project is not public! m² enbureau Hoogeveen Kroon Vastgoed enbureauhoogeveen 16

photo: CornbreadWorks photo: CornbreadWorks Church of Living Herenstraat Utrecht An old Catholic church is transformed into one spatial residence The character of the small church is maintained and where possible reinforced The balcony at the organ is maintained and extended in the shape of a organizing element, free in the space This element defines the different living spaces; like living, cooking and studying, in the chapel A new spatial hierarchy is created by the asymmetric placing of the organizing element The object is kept very minimalistic and is given abstract shapes, by which it creates an contrast with the original, soft shapes of the chapel Despite of their contribution to the dark character of the church, the leaded glass is maintained For this reason roof lights are attached to the space, through which diffused day light enters the chapel In combination with a completely white surface finishes, the leaded glass comes to life Also a new, somewhat bold, abstract modern Mondrian version of a leaded glass front framing is introduced photo: CornbreadWorks Project is not public! m² Zecc en Private ZeccenBV 17

photo: op ten noort blijdenstein photo: op ten noort blijdenstein Atelier houses Emmy van Lokhorststraat Utrecht It is not uncommon that artists live in squatters quarters or old buildings, but with this new project, artists get their own type of housing in the middle of the new suburban area: Leidsche Rijn near Utrecht The atelier-houses are situated in a cherry orchard which was once part of the rural area of Utrecht Most of the trees could be preserved and new trees were planted to create a special green hotspot The exterior of the barn buildings refers to the rural past of Leidsche Rijn A central entrance hall gives access to 10 atelier spaces, the domain of the artist The doors of the ateliers can be opened in order to get one large exposition hall The residences are situated on top of the ateliers Project is not public! m² op ten noort blijdenstein Portaal ontwikkeling and SWK op_ten_noort_blijdenstein photo: op ten noort blijdenstein 18

photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd De Boemerang Musicallaan 3543 Utrecht The brief for this neighbourhood prescribed an eight-storey apartment complex adjacent to a park and, behind it, a green residential area of reduced traffic flow with a central parking zone for 100 cars By cutting the apartment complex's volume obliquely and placing the parts side-by-side, the connection with the 'residential park' was improved and the capacity of the parking garage underneath was doubled Thus, the surplus parking zone planned for the centre of the project could be shifted underneath the apartments, and a practically car-free area achieved An internal street is created above the garage and between the two linear volumes of the 'boomerang' building A vehicular access road loops through the park, beginning and ending in the garage where parking space for the whole development is located The garage therefore becomes an integral component of the plan for the residents of the park and 'boomerang' alike photo: Dirk Verwoerd 2006, Urban planner Contractor search Slokker Bouwmaatschappij bv BPF Bouwinvest dirkverwoerd 21

photo: Duccio Malagamba photo: Duccio Malagamba Universiteitsmuseum Lange Nieuwstraat PN Utrecht The first item of the University Museum that grabs your attention is the glass box in the front façade A glassed-in corridor runs the length of the building, giving an immense feeling of space Entering the museum garden, the Old Hortus, the greenhouses leap immediately to the eye Also the 18th century orangeries and botanic laboratory are interesting buildings reminding of the early years of the Old Hortus A former orangery is now a garden-fronted café The museum is a building in super modernistic style, with functional elements Super modernism originates with a minimalistic design and the use of materials like glass, concrete and steel The museum function determines the form of the building: using glass makes the Old Hortus visible from the street as well and the box construction is excessively suited to fit up expositions In 1997 Dutch architect Koen van Velsen won the prestigious Rietveldprijs and Archinormprijs for the sublime box-in-a-box concept photo: Duccio Malagamba 1996 Koen van Velsen University of Utrecht MI_MOA Open daily from (cafe is closed on Mondays) Closed on January 1, April 30, December 25 Other holidays open Group tour can be booked in advance, for details and prizes see the website 23

photo: Miguel Villegas photo: Miguel Villegas Extension to Utrecht Townhall Korte Minrebroederstraat GG Utrecht Utrecht's town hall has an age-long history The administration of the city of Utrecht has been seated at this location for over 650 years In the course of time some ten medieval buildings and city castles were interconnected that still form the core of the premises The result was an overly compact and impenetrable labyrinth with many different floor levels In 1997 the local government commissioned Spanish architect Enric Miralles ( ) to design a building that was open, transparent and inviting The aim was to combine the existing monumental parts, which were to be renovated, with a new wing Miralles combined modern architectural ideas with the historical elements in a very personal way The main entrance was moved; it now is located in the external wall that for centuries had been the back of the premises In the process, this relocation resulted in the formation of a new square The architect's signature is equally visible in the interior photo: Miguel Villegas Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT City of Utrecht arquitextonica You can get a tour through the town hall on Monday - Friday between hr Other ours are also possible, but only on request Reservation is necessary: tel + 31(0) , on working days between hr post@gildeutrechtnl Website: wwwgildeutrechtnl Costs per person: 3,00 Loca architecture centre AORTA also organises tours though the building (1,5 hour)

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Viktor Ramos Educatorium Leuvenlaan CE Utrecht Situated in the centre of the University Campus the Uithof, just outside the centre of Utrecht, this building is most famous for its use of concrete The concrete construction of the building folds and forms the floor, wall and ceiling in one curved motion In the ceiling, steel reinforcement bars emerge from the exposed concrete slab Steel and concrete dissociate allowing each material to work at optimum efficiency: the 20cm thick concrete slab is made to span 21 metres "Composed of two planes which fold to accommodate a range of distinct programs including an outdoor plaza, two lecture halls, cafeteria and a testing facility Planes interlock to create a single trajectory in which the entire university experience socialization, learning, examination is encapsulated" Bad detailing or lack of proper maintenance has caused the facade to look old and worn out, even after a couple of years photo: Piotr Krajewski m² Structural engineer Contractor OMA - Rem Koolhaas ABT BAM University of Utrecht NGHM The building is public and open to visit freely, at workdays on office hours For guided tours, contact the Utrecht ure Centre at aorta@aortanu and tours@aortanu or call +31 (0) Buslines 11, 12 and 12-S go from Utrecht Central Station to the Uithof university campus Call the reception of the Educatorium at +31 (0)

photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters AA Hijmans van den Bergh medical faculty Universiteitsweg CG Utrecht The faculty building forms the corner to the existing Academic Hospital of Utrecht The building volume seeks to strengthen the existing entrance area of the hospital complex In addition it needs to retain an independent building identity within the complex and also to form part of the University campus On a gross floor area of approximately m2, the building consists of three parts: office space, classrooms with individual workspaces and a restaurant In both the office and education areas, flexible work environments are provided where different teaching scenarios can occur In the centre of the building are three glass voids, which allow sunlight into the building They connect the public areas in the building with the education floors and are visible from throughout the building The cones integrate the load bearing structure and serve as large ventilation shafts The crystal glass shapes thus form a technical backbone as well as the atmospherical heart of the building photo: Christian Richters m², Interior architect Designed by Erick van Egeraat Designed_by_Erick_van_Egeraat University of Utrecht 35

photo: Ernst Moritz photo: Dirk Verwoerd Rietveld Schröderhuis Prins Hendriklaan Utrecht A visit to the Rietveld Schröder House remains a fascinating experience This house is the only building ever realized on the basis of the architectural principles of De Stijl Typical features are the use of the Stijl colours red, blue and yellow, in combination with white, grey and black, the relation between interior and exterior and the unity between the free-standing pieces of furniture and the fitted parts of the interior According to Rietveld and Schröder one had to have an active attitude to life For them too living in a home is a conscious act The furnishing of the house reflects this conviction The occupant has to perform a transaction for every activity: the bathroom is created by opening out a wall, while the sleeping areas could be screened off with sliding walls, and privacy was obtained by placing shutters in front of the windows The house is literally a machine for living in photo: Jannes Linders 1924 Gerrit Rietveld Truus Schröder MI_MOA On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can visit the Rietveld Schröderhuis The house can only be visited with a tour of max 10 people You can reserve a place in the tour by sending an to rhreserveringen[at]centraalmuseumnl There is a special Rietveld bus that leaves from the Centraal Museum at 1145, 1245, 1345 and 1445 hr It takes you to all Rietveld-designs and back to the Centraal Museum (address: Nicolaaskerkhof 10, Utrecht) 36

photo: Pedro Maia photo: Pedro Maia Bridges Parkwijk Leidsche Rijn Zandweg AA Utrecht The master plan for Leidsche Rijn was developed by Maxwan between 93 and '95 With houses it is one of the largest urban schemes in Dutch history The scheme features a large network of canals that are part of the sustainable water-management plan Some 100 bridges connect the road network over these canals Maxwan designed a new family of 16 bridges for Leidsche Rijn These bridges hardly have to bridge: the canals are not wide and are not accessible to big boats Maxwan decided not to make an issue out of the span, but to rather treat each bridge as a piece of public space with a special gift: to be above water Because a good road implies efficiency and luxury of connection - for all users - the smoothest links possible were made, curving the sides of the bridge to match the traffic givens on either side of the water 'Ponds' were allowed to appear in the deck of the bridge, where asphalt was not needed The bridges are outlined with mirror-polished stainless steel railings photo: Pedro Maia m², Urban planner Structural engineer Maxwan ABT City of Utrecht calahan 24h 37

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Basket Bar Genevelaan CC Utrecht The Utrecht University Campus, according to its best tradition, gives birth to another provocative and irreverent building: the BasketBar, which consists of a flat basket ground over a grand café room, as 15 x 15 meters flat extension of the previous bookstore, just on the back of the OMA's Educatorium In the early 90's, OMA prepared the master plan for the renewed University Campus, which encompasses a lot of Dutch Second Modernity's exemplary buildings such as Mecanoo's Faculty of Economics and Management, Neutelings Riedijk's Minnaert Building, UN Studio's NMR Laboratory and OMA's Educatorium All these buildings are spread on a large site called De Uithof at the edge of the city, hosting about among staff and students The BasketBar, together with the Educatorium, represented the only extensive meeting place for all this population, until the large black library was built photo: Naomi Schiphorst m² NL s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi Mo - Fri from 10:30 till late Weekends are for arranged groups 41

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst University Library UBU Heidelberglaan CS Utrecht This black box is both praised and hated Let s hear the architect: It is a place where people can work in a concentrated fashion, but also one where they can meet others without the need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the building radiates The book depots divide the space into zones interconnected by stairs and slopes All in black figured concrete on which a partly double-glazed facade to which a silk-screened figurative pattern has been applied in order to let natural light in Based on the idea that silent communication is important in a building where there is hardly any talking, the atmosphere had emphasis on creating a sense of security That was essential for choosing a black interior A light, shiny floor provides enough reflection to illuminate the books and white tables make it possible to read The bar, lounge, reception, auditorium, desks, are all fitted with red rubber, thereby breaking down the mono-functionality of the library program m² Wiel Arets s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst mo-fr: sa: su: From Utrecht Central Station take bus 11 or 12 towards "De Uithof", the university campus 42
