4 photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Naomi Schiphorst Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd Floor area/size m² Piet Blom City of Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven The show-cube at number 70 is open daily, from 11:00-17:00 h Entrance: 2 euro For more information see the website wwwkubuswoningnl Take the Subway or train to Station Blaak Or tram

6 photo: Zwarts & Jansma architects photo: Zwarts & Jansma architects Wilhelminaplein Subway Station Wilhelminaplein DE Rotterdam A complex of courthouse and offices The Wilhelminahof was built as a stimulus for the southern bank of the Maas The Wilhelminaplein metro station is constructed beneath this complex at the site of an existing tunnel which had to remain operational during construction work At its deepest point, the 135-metre-long station is 16 m below surface, making it the deepest in the The passenger tunnel was honored for its ambiance and social safe-ness The initial idea was to make a station with a luxurious allure and a high-quality finish in an attempt to upgrade the public transport network, so that it would represent a true alternative for transport by car The station was actually constructed in reverse order First the walls were poured, and served as supporting structure during the excavation of the building site Then the roof of the station was placed on top The mass of the roof prevented the tunnel structure drifting upwards under the pressure of the ground water photo: Naomi Schiphorst Zwarts & Jansma s RET Rotterdam MI_MOA Daily Take the subway to stop Wilhelminaplein 6

10 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Jeroen Musch Kraton 230 Lloydstraat EA Rotterdam Part of the larger Schiecentrale Complex in the former harbour area Lloydkwartier, this new building will house the local TV broadcasting station, its studio s and offices The Schiecentrale used to be an electricity plant, now transformed into a creative melting-pot of 80 different film, audio-visual and Information and Communication Technology businesses The complex consists of the 25Kv Building, the Trafohuis, Hotel Stroom, the canteen building, and more living and working space The façade of this building, clad with cast-iron panels has a special pattern, designed by Studio Job It refers to the former steel-industry of the harbour area, and was chosen for its dirty look, and the resemblance to the cast-iron covers on street-holes The plates, now orange, will soon rust more and change into dark brown, leaving rusty, red water, which will be disgorged The choice for this material leaves visitors to think it is also one of the renovated and reused buildings photo: Jeroen Musch Project is not public! 13 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Erasmus Bridge landings Willemsplein DR Rotterdam Rising to a height of 139 m and spanning a width of 802 m, the bridge over the River Maas is a landmark for Rotterdam The eye-catching steel asymmetric pylon is not the only interesting thing on this bridge: its concrete, slowly rising unusual formed landings are quite as impressive Solidly anchored to the north shore the road to Erasmus Bridge is not only quite narrow, but built on a slight incline, reducing the structure's apparent heaviness and giving it a slender, light appearance On top are two sidewalks, two cycle tracks, tram rails and two vehicle carriageways Constructed to facilitate the orchestration of traffic flows, the sweeping concrete staircases of the bridge lead up from the parking garage on the north side, extending the curve of the main ramp to pedestrian level and turning the bridge into something of a public space in the sky Underneath the traffic deck, there?s a shop, restaurant, bar and underground parking, all part of the same construction photo: Naomi Schiphorst 1996 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven Tram 20, 23 and 25 all cross the Erasmusbridge Under the bridge, accessible from the Willemsplein, on the north side of the river 13

15 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Rob Hoekstra Plussenburgh Grote Hagen RD Rotterdam Plussenburgh is an apartment building for the elderly It stands in Ijsselmonde, one of Rotterdam's Tuinsteden (garden suburbs) These Tuinsteden are earmarked for a thorough overhaul during which flats will be renovated and the quality of public space upgraded As the first new building to be realized, Plussenburgh is a key project in the urban regeneration operation to provide Ijsselmonde with a new and identifiable centre Arons & Gelauff followed the existing spatial typology -slabs and towers- but in the façade treatment they opted for contrast with the surrounding predominance of flat façades, galleries and the colour grey by introducing enclosed galleries, sculptural shapes and bright red, yellow and purple colours, applied in a more or less arbitrary pattern The brackets supporting the balconies make the same wavy motion in a vertical direction and double as balcony partitions The three-dimensional effect is further strengthened by the twisting of the steel balustrades Project is not public! 16 photo: Rob Niemantsverdriet KPN Office Wilhelminakade AP Rotterdam Located at the southern end of the Erasmus Bridge, this for the - relatively tall tower (98 meters, 23 storeys) provides office space for the KPN Telecom company The façade that is facing the city and the bridge is clad with green lights, distributed over the glass They work as a giant billboard and change every day, with the season, activities, festivals or just show KNP-logos The 37 x 72 meter / 2922 m2 monochrome screen turns into a place to a giant public display for animations and graphics It consists of 896 square Osram lamps in a 22*41 grid photo: Marc Heeman Project is not public! 17 Cafe De Unie Mauritsweg JT Rotterdam During the bombing of the city centre of Rotterdam on the 14th of May 1940 in World War II, the original building by JJP Oud was destroyed It stood at the Coolsingel In 1986 the façade was reproduced by architect Carel Weeber at the Mauritsweg, in a part of Rotterdam that was spared from the bombs The design is a perfect example of the Dutch artistic moment De Stijl with its use of primary colours and simple abstract composition of vertical and horizontal directions Next to the Rietveld-Schröderhuis in Utrecht it is a very clear cut completion of the ideals of the movement The ground floor houses a bar and restaurant In the back is a small theatre 1925 JJP Oud De Unie NGHM photo: Rob Niemantsverdriet About 5 minutes walking from central station Leave the train station and walk straight on, in the Mauritsweg It is halfway on the left 17

18 photo: Renee Willeman photo: Renee Willeman Schouwburgplein Schouwburgplein CL Rotterdam In the 1980 s this area was once viewed as a problem area a large empty place without character The new square now is an urban stage, interactive and changing, with the skyline as its décor The Schouwburgplein is situated in the heart of the city and is surrounded by shops and flanked by the City Theatre and the City Concert Hall The space is furnitured with 15 meter high ventilation towers from the underground parking and four hydraulic lighting elements Their configuration can be interactively altered by the inhabitants of the city The layout of the square is based on the expected use at different times of the day and its relationship to the sun These sunlight-zones are reflected in the mosaic of the different materials used on the floorthe whole square is lifted 35 cm from ground level to enhance the stage-effect photo: Felix Kalkman 1997 Landscape architect West 8 City of Rotterdam NGHM 24/7 The schouwburg square is about 5 min walking from the Central Train station, or take tram 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 23 and get off at the Kruisplein It's around the corner 18

20 photo: Mecanoo photo: Christian Richters Montevideo Landverhuizersplein MH Rotterdam The Montevideo tower is one of the high-rise buildings on the Wilhelminapier that determine the skyline of Rotterdam The starting point of the design was the Holland-America feeling of the pier The building is a composition of interlocking volumes, a section of which cantilevers over the quayside The restaurants and offices in the lower part enhance the vibrant urban atmosphere, while the tower section references 1930s skyscrapers in New York, Boston and Chicago The structure features an American-style steel structure on the lower two floors, a ninety-metre-tall typically Dutch concrete structure in the middle section, and a steel-structure top The name Montevideo recalls the tradition of warehouses that once stood here with exotic names such as New Orleans, Santos, Baltimore and Havana The letter M atop the building is an eight-metre-high weather vane It stands for Rotterdam s maritime tradition, the River Maas and, of course, the building s name photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! 21 photo: Peter Varkevisser Photography Periscope Houses Marinus van Elswijkkade 3059 SG Rotterdam The neighbourhood Waterwijk (waterquarter) is situated in the new urban suburb Nesselande, an expansion area of Rotterdam In this quarter the 12 dwellings are the main eye-catchers at the edge of the neighbourhood, with a row of periscope-houses next to the water Nesselande lies somewhere between Nieuwerkerk and Zevenhuizen In the 'exclusive and idyllic archipelago' the prosperous (mostly inhabitants of Rotterdam, fleeing the city) can built their dreamhouse without interference of municipal committees Despite a specially organized design competition (as an inspiration-tool for fresh, new ideas), the area offers the same familiar image many of these neighbourhoods have: a lot of catalogus-houses and here-and-there an architectural stunt In the masterplan some parts have been allocated for medium scale project developments, and this project is one of them The 12 dwellings are built upon the so-called drive-in principle: you park your car in the house, and live on the first floor photo: Peter Varkevisser Photography Project is not public! 23 photo: Ulrich Schwarz photo: Ulrich Schwarz Urban Podium Rotterdam Grotekerkplein 3011 GC Rotterdam Situated between the gothic Sint Laurenskerk and the Delftsevaart canal, the Grotekerkplein was formed only during the course of the modernist reconstruction of the city center, which was almost entirely destroyed during WW2 Despite its central location the square hardly plays a role in the city life, as no shopping streets connect it to the rest the public spaces, and only a few facilities are oriented towards the square itself Therefore the idea emerged to activate the square programmatically as well as spatially through the construction of a small theater pavilion, in order to fill the displeasing vacuum within the city fabric The built theater podium interprets the task at hand consistently and maybe a little surprisingly as a mostly urbanistic operation The existing situation is taken as a starting point and improved through a targeted and powerful gesture A 40m long structure forcefully separates square and canal in order to enhance their respective spatial legibility photo: Ulrich Schwarz Floor area/size m² Building costs consultant Contractor Atelier Kempe Thill ABT JP van Eesteren Rotary Club Rotterdam North, Foundation Grotekerkplein 23

24 photo: DKV en Ammersooiseplein Housing Ammersooiseplein RP Rotterdam Representing the last major urban renewal operation in the Angiesebuurt, an area in the north of Rotterdam, the Ammersooiseplein housing replaces the locally prevailing perimeter block with two parallel volumes, set at right angles to the railway viaduct stabbing through the area The freestanding apartment building has a dual focus In the lowest two levels the dwellings overlook the square; those above look out onto the skyline of the city centre This division of the mass accommodates the scale of the surrounding development, though the white rendering framing the main mass stresses the block's unity Inside the white frame, the façade of set-back external galleries presents a black plan dotted with a capricious pattern of brightly colored front doors The freestanding lift shaft with its visibly moving lift adds a strong vertical thrust to what is predominantly a horizontally composed façade photo: DKV en Project is not public! 1988 DKV en Patrimonium Woningstichting DKV 24

25 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Naomi Schiphorst Body House Walhallalaan 3072 Rotterdam A remarkable house for ambitious private clients The task was simple: the design of a row house with the kitchen/dining space as heart in a big living The neighbours houses offered us a void (left) in which we suspended the kitchen (center) The insulated kitchen is connected with plinth and roof (right) To keep the living as empty as possible program like entry, storage, bedroom, master bathroom, etc was put in the plinth The glazed facets in the front are carefully designed Below is the view from the living towards the park nearby Central is the big eye directed onto the panorama of the river High up is the triangle that holds the horizon with a view on the ever developing Rotterdam skyline The flexible roof tent consists of 3x3 parts and can be set up in many configurations, depending on the weather and the use: barbeque, sleeping, reading, etc Project is not public! 26 photo: Paulien Borst photo: Paulien Borst Blaak 31 Blaak GA Rotterdam Blaak 31 is situated alongside Rotterdam s future Market Hall, designed by MVDRV The office building will be used mainly by the legal and tax service provider Loyens & Loeff for which Delft based interior architects Fokkema & Partners designed the interior spaces A large number of new projects in Rotterdam s Laurenskwartier and the Waterstad contribute to the current revival of the historic city of Rotterdam A new series of buildings for living and working is added to the reconstruction architecture of the 1950 s to make the centre lively and attractive again On this important site the 12 story building shows a striking form, distinctive and recognizable The volumes are slightly rotated relative to each other and shift 270 meters every three floors This form is partly determined by the distance to the Market Hall with the aim of allowing maximum light and privacy for both buildings In addition, the underground metro line affects the massing of the building photo: Paulien Borst Project is not public!
