3 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Maastricht Fire Station Willem Alexanderweg Maastricht To strengthen the robust image of this fire station along the ring road of Maastricht, the façades are made from green-pigmented concrete panels with a relief pattern of car tire imprints The large garage dominates the front façade as a stage set for the fire trucks, while at the rear one finds the training grounds and the supply areas The top floor is an attractive living quarter organized around a large reflective water pond and roof terrace The pond stores rainwater to fill up the trucks and generates a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, compensating for the hectic life of the fire fighters photo: João Morgado Public access unknown! m² Neutelings Riedijk City of Maastricht JMMM By bicycle from the city centre: 5 minutes 3

6 photo: Jan Bitter photo: Jan Bitter H House Veldstraat 12A 6227 SZ Maastricht The H House is a detached single family glass residence that heavily utilises varying shades of transparency to obtain desired privacy levels Sited in a hilly suburban area of Maastricht near the -Belgium border, the H House was designed for a couple with a strong interest in the arts Individually an actor and a dancer, and dually landscape architects, the owners are able to keep their landscaping skills honed in the formal garden behind the house, which they occasionally open to the public The interior of the home is comparable to that of a loft-like space with a central mezzanine The interior of the house has no structural walls and very few rectangular columns support the structural slabs, each positioned to minimize their impact on the interior space All other walls, whether internal or external, consist of glass in varying shades of opacity photo: Jan Bitter Project is not public! m² Wiel Arets s WielAretss 6

17 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Sahil Latheef La Fortezza Offices and Housing Avenue Ceramique KV Maastricht The site of La Fortezza Offices and Housing is located at a turning point on the central axis of a newly built area The lot is triangular, one side of which is formed by a street in a residential area and the other by a motorway The issue of the corner is dealt with by use of a cylinder which, placed in the middle, articulates two linear volumes The determination of uses is expressed by the volumetric composition Hence the apartments are located in the cylindrical volume, while the offices are located in the two linear ones In its tripartite articulation of surface, the design features deep cuts that reveal loggias and an ordered repetition of windows The cylinder, being almost double the height of the linear volumes, becomes the focal point A square courtyard is delineated within the cylinder and two large portals in front and a generous cut at the rear reveal the courtyard to the exterior photo: Sahil Latheef Project is not public! m² Structural engineer Mario Botta Büro Hoen architecten Wilma Vastgoed Sahil_Latheef 17

18 photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts Piazza Céramique Mosalunet 6221 JM Maastricht As one of the last urban blocks to be realized in the 'Ceramique Area' of Maastricht the scheme does not opt for the here common solution of the closed perimeter block, but employs a spatial strategy in which urban space is opened up Through strategically placing 3 volumes it not only makes that the public space flows though the site, but it also involves the triangular green area to its east into this interlinking of urban spaces The program within the block was that of an integrated form of dwellings and working space In terms of typology the project tries to revive the 19th century type of mansion annex practice usually inhabited by lawyers, doctors, architects etc Characteristic for this type of integrated house and practice was the separation of entrances, leading to the public practice and the private house Via an a glassed atrium that acts as a sort of public lobby for both the apartments and the workspaces one enters one of these spaces photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts Project is not public! 2006 Main designer,, Urban planner Jo Janssen en studioivo Wim van den Bergh Vesteda 18

19 photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts Capucijnenhof Capucijnenstraat 6211 Maastricht The Capucijnenhof is one of the many enclosed spaces in the urban fabric of Maastricht A conglomerate of buildings of a former monastery including a chapel abut an inner courtyard shaded by 6 giant chestnut trees The existing buildings have been converted into apartments and supplemented by three new patio dwellings The three dwellings are located in the smaller part of the courtyard, which is divided in two spatially by the chapel Through the change of function the courtyard becomes a kind of extroverted introversion, an intriguing spatial paradox also exploited in the typology of the three houses The entry level a storage room, the bathroom and three bedrooms, two of which open onto a small patio in the back The upper floor contains the living area that opens to the side towards a kind of elevated patio, which in turn overlooks the courtyard again Project is not public! 1998 Main designer, Wim van den Bergh Ger Widdershoven studioivo photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts 19

20 Housing tower Admirant Emmasingel 5611 AZ Eindhoven Next to De Admirant (the former Philips tower) Dam & Partners designed this residential and office tower that marks the centre of Eindhoven like a large white sculpture The way the building is situated in its environment excludes the incidence of 90 angles The angled shape, glass corners and sloping roof still suggests a degree of slenderness, but the dense concrete façade has yet again something rude In particular, the connection to the public area is a true shame This building adds absolutely nothing to the experience of public space: a closed wall with an entrance as a mouse-hole Project is not public! m² Dam & Partners en Rond de Admirant CV, Rosmalen Gemeente_Eindhoven 20

22 De Admirant Entrance Building 18 Septemberplein 5611 Eindhoven Following the definition of the Masterplan in 1998 for the center of Eindhoven in Holland, studio Fuksas developed four different projects associated with it: the 18-Septemberplein, a square of 7000 m² with an underground parking lot of 2300m² for 1700 bicycles, the Piazza Shopping Mall, a shopping center covering approximately 20000m² with 6000m² of office space, the Media Market, a store for sales of electrical appliances and electronic equipment and the Admirant Entrance Building (also nicknamed The Blob) The Admirant entrance building is at the same time part of a newly developed shopping area Commercial spaces are located on the ground and first level and office spaces on level three and four (plus an additional technical level) m² Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas Heijmans MI_MOA 22

23 photo: Giovanni Bellinvia De Bijenkorf Piazza AE Eindhoven For the de Bijenkorf façade Giò Ponti tested a little 3-dimensional tile coloured in different variants of green A colour arranged with openings in the shape of stretched hexagons, also applied for the Concattedrale in Taranto and for the San Carlo hospital chapel in Milan It is said that Ponti got his inspiration for this facade, while flying over The, and looking at the water-lined green landschape below Even though the Bijenkorf wanted only 3 layers, in the urban plan 4 layers was more fitting Therefore the upper layer has hardly any volume, and is only facade Up until now, an extension to the 4th floor has never been realized 1969 Main designer, Gio Ponti archviews The building is located next to the central train station, really easy to find 23

24 Evoluon Noord Brabantlaan Eindhoven The Evoluon is a conference centre and former science museum erected by Philips in Eindhoven The building is unique due to its very futuristic design, resembling a landed flying saucer The building was based on an idea by Frits Philips, who originally made a sketch of the building on a paper napkin Frits wanted to give the people of Eindhoven a beautiful and educational gift to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the company that bears his family name Its concrete dome is 77m in diameter In the 1960s and 70s it attracted large visitor numbers, since its interactive exhibitions were a new and unique concept at that time But after several years of losing visitors and money, the original museum closed down in 1989 and the Evoluon was converted into a conference center, opening in LC Kalff + LLJ de Bever Frits Philips Norbert_van_Onna Evoluon is near at the A2 motorway and is a stone's throw from Eindhoven Airport Evoluon has 500 free parking spaces and is easily accessible by public transport The Eindhoven train station is an 8 minute bus ride From Eindhoven central train station take bus 401 (towards airport) or bus 402 (direction Veldhoven), stop Evoluon It departs every 10 minutes on average a bus from Eindhoven central 24

25 Klokgebouw Klokgebouw AB Eindhoven Parallel to the railway track is the former Philite factory for making Bakelite The building consists of six and eight floors below a flat roof and a tower-like building with clock and Philips Emblem This tower is a water reservoir Build in 1929 with reinforced concrete similar to the last factory buildings build on the Emmasingel in the city cente, here are rigid façades with large windows into small panes The so-called Klokgebouw (clock building) or formerly known as 'Philips SA' is now a national monument The building has been renovated, and re-used by about 100 different creative companies 1929 Main designer, AIJ de Broekert JR Bouten Norbert_van_Onna 25

26 photo: Peter Cox photo: Peter Cox Just your kind of thing Bilderdijklaan NH Eindhoven Since 8 April 2006, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is connected to the Stratumsedijk by way of a bridge shaped like a bright pink house The bridge is designed and built by Eindhoven artist and architect John Körmeling, commissioned by the Van Abbemuseum This work of art entitled Echt iets voor u is the shortest covered bridge in the worldthe bright pink house and bridge has the words Echt iets voor u (Just your kind of thing) on the roof top in in twinkling lights It is a remarkable, inviting eye catcher that makes the area behind the museum lively, attractive and characteristic, even at night The bridge gives you direct access to the open-air café on the banks of the river Dommel John Körmeling is represented in the Van Abbemuseum collection with several works He is also responsible for one of the rooms in Plug In, the new approach to presenting the museum s collection John Körmeling Van Abbemuseum MI_MOA photo: Peter Cox 26
