photo: Harry Heuts photo: Harry Heuts Transformation of Wiebenga Hal Avenue Ceramique KX Maastricht The Wiebengahal, the remains of the hall complex of the Sphinx factories designed by JG Wiebenga in 1912, stands in front of the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, The hall has a concrete skeleton with infill and it boasts the first concrete-shell roof in the During the construction of the Bonnefantenmuseum the hall was renovated by architect Aldo Rossi and given a new façade and stairwells The large window panels with closed lower walls on the Avenue Ceramique side designed by Rossi were replaced by floor-to-ceiling, steel-framed panels reinforcing the relationship with the public space This created a display window for the offices and public functions (former location of NAi Maastricht) The preservation of the building's industrial character was an important point of departure in the design: the rough concrete construction had to remain visible For this reason the partition walls are lit from above and the installations are designed to be well-ordered and visible photo: Marc Dorleijn Project is public! 7 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens Kruisheren Cloister Kruisherengang NW Maastricht Situated in the centre of Maastricht is the former 15th century Kruisheren (Crutched Friar) monastery Together with the monumental Gothic church, this complex has been transformed into a very special designer hotel It is a unique place, in which antiquity and modern design are interwoven; yet, at the same time, architectural contrasts between the past and the present are very clear The designers often walk the tightrope between dignity and blasphemies During the French Revolution, it served as a barracks and arsenal Early last century, Victor de Stuers esquire and the architect Cuypers took pity on the complex of buildings, which had fallen into a state of disrepair Following major renovations, the buildings were put into use as a National Agricultural Research Station Late in 2000, Camille Oostwegel took the initiative to save this unique building from ruin Large-scale renovations transformed it into a luxurious, contemporary designer hotel, retaining respect for the past Project is public! 2007 Supplier SATIJNplus en GIRA Camille Oostwegel Château Hotels -Restaurants Marieke_Mannens photo: Naomi Schiphorst 24/7 Please contact to visit the hotel rooms From Eindhoven/Heerlen: end of A2/E25 motorway to Maastricht you reach a large crossing, turn right to Hasselt Follow Ring Noord Cross river on Noorder bridge Turn left at traffic lights, to Tongeren Turn left in Calvariestraat After 500 m pass a Church and Monastery on your left This is it! 8 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens Office building Il Fiori Avenue Ceramique KX Maastricht Opposite of Aldo Rossi s Bonnefanten Museum the site, in effect a left-over corner, suggested no more than a building doing duty as an angular wall to screen off the residential area beyond from a quirky square at the front Il Fiore means blossoming or flowering, and this is what the building is supposed to be representing Hertzberger says: The transparent front buildings contrast fully with the all but blank wall they are attached to, like blossoms standing out from a branch At two points the building is elevated, to open up to the neighbourhood behind The ceramic façade of these bridges refers to the history of this former industrial area photo: Marieke Mannens Project is public! 9 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens STOA Bellefroidlunet KN Maastricht On the Charles Eyckpark lies a long housingblock of 300 m with luxurious apartments overlooking the River Maas The Swiss architects Luigi Snozzi and Aurelop Galfetti designed this superstructure, after winning an international competition By using a strict but carefully chosen repetition of vertical object, a chain or sequence is made that creates a very serene and calm composition on the river bank The block is opened up at several different places, to connect the park and de street behind The structure does not have a front or back side; that is why Snozzi decided to give both a different structure and texture in the façade photo: Marieke Mannens Project is public! 10 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Book Shop Dominicanen Dominikanerkerkstraat CZ Maastricht With only 750 m2 floor area to use and a program of 1200 m2 floor to realise, the architects had to use the height of the Old Dominican church The solution is a multi-storey monumental black book storage, one big cabinet with an elevator and stairs, to take you up until you reach the roof of the church The steel frame book-cabinet is placed a-symmetrical in the church, to keep the total interior space intact At the back readers can enjoy a quality coffee A great urban interior! 14 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Tower of Siza Avenue Céramique KV Maastricht only=42282 Residential tower in Maastricht, near Plein 1992 (urban plan by Jo Coenen), the Ceramique district The tower's facade is partly clad with white marble, partly with zinc The 16 storeys make it a 54 meter high building At the end of the central avenue this is a central landmark, forming the link between the old town and the new Céramique-project Because of this relation Alvaro Siza has project the three building volumes apart from each other, but still they are situated on the same spot The volumes are turned towards the different angles of the streets and this way the building works as a hinge in the urban fabric Project is not public! 16 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings Music School at the Glass Palace Bongerd JM Heerlen Both architects Arets and Coenen were born in Heerlen, and became interested in the 'old master' Fritz Peutz who had designed the next-door Glasspaleis (Glass Palace) in 1935 While they were working on the refurbisming the Glass Palace, they found an ingenious solution for the Music School: a new building, separate and yet connected Together with Buro Bouwkunde they build this in a joint venture (ABBC) There are reminders of the Glass Palace in the design: it is shaped like a projecting mushroom and the walls (and roof) are clad with small glass panels Hallways link up underground, and there is a sunken courtyard The lower wall continues from the outside to the inside There is also an undergrounnd dance studio, and a number of 'suspended' classrooms on the Pancratius square side of the building The huge windows reflect the surrounding buildings, and because they are placed at an angle, they also mirror the old church tower photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is public! Main designer, ABBC Jo Coenen Wiel Arets s City of Heerlen MI_MOA The building is occasionally open to the public, depending on the agenda of activities like exhibitions and performances Check the website of the music school for more information, or call +31 (0) The Glass Palace and the Music School in Heerlen lies on 6 minutes walking distance from the train-station From the station, walk towards the centre, follow the Saroleastraat until you reach a square, 'De Bongerd' The Glass Palace is opposite of the street 16

Piazza Céramique Mosalunet 6221 JM Maastricht As one of the last urban blocks to be realized in the 'Ceramique Area' of Maastricht the scheme does not opt for the here common solution of the closed perimeter block, but employs a spatial strategy in which urban space is opened up Through strategically placing 3 volumes it not only makes that the public space flows though the site, but it also involves the triangular green area to its east into this interlinking of urban spaces The program within the block was that of an integrated form of dwellings and working space In terms of typology the project tries to revive the 19th century type of mansion annex practice usually inhabited by lawyers, doctors, architects etc Characteristic for this type of integrated house and practice was the separation of entrances, leading to the public practice and the private house Via an a glassed atrium that acts as a sort of public lobby for both the apartments and the workspaces one enters one of these spaces Project is not public! 2006 Main designer,, Urban planner Jo Janssen en studioivo Wim van den Bergh Vesteda 17

Open Universiteit Nederland Valkenburgerweg AT Heerlen The project takes on the task of correcting the urban planning with the help of traditional concepts such as space, order and legibility The programme for the new building incorporates three functions: management offices, a media library with a demonstration room and a restaurant A wide stairs in the two-storey air space of the hall leads from below to the upper public programme section, the media library In turn, this opens out onto a roof terrace over the restaurant The central patio offers complete peace and guides the sunlight reflected from the east wall via a longitudinal skylight and the air space down to the ground floor Inside the cube, this ensures a surprising abundance of light and the dynamics of the light changing according to the time of day and to the season Project is not public! 2002 Main designer,, Urban planner, Urban planner Jo Janssen en studioivo IAA en Enschede Open Universiteit Nederland 18

Limburg waterworks HQ Limburglaan GA Maastricht In the south-east of Maastricht near the hill of St Pietersberg, the dominant course of the Maas is translated into a slender structure parallel to the river; visible from afar, it mediates between the two quarters on either side of the ring road, 'Céramique' and 'Randwyck' A long volume follows the ring road in its ascent to the Maas bridge, and simultaneously leads to the tall building With its four floors, it has been kept as low as possible to be able to lie low beside the rising embankment A further vertical body brings the two volumes together, a 'spine' with its vertical development and a 'social condenser' with its meeting rooms and coffee and tea kitchens on each floor The entrance hall takes up two floors, from where the restaurant and aula are reached via steps and galleries At the very top, at the end of the course, the conference room and roof terrace look out over the entire city Project is not public! 1999 Main designer,, Urban planner Interior architect Jo Janssen en studioivo IAA en Enschede Paulus Egers Watermaatschappij Limburg 19

Hazendans Koninksemstraat 6215 KA Maastricht Surrounded by four streets, 16 patiohouses are designed, which own both a formal entrance and a rear-entrance The presence of these two entrances, located on the sides of the buildings, create rather long and narrow lots and the houses all have a wide view towards the garden The houses are built in turns, which creates a larger space considering urban development The ground level is intended to be used as a living level, while the rooms on the first level are intended to be used as bedrooms The rooms of the ground level are grouped around a screen of reglit-glass, which separates the hall from the living-room Project is not public! 2002 Main designer,, Urban planner Jo Janssen en studioivo Wim van den Bergh 20

Salvator Apartment Building Zwartbroekstraat 6041 Roermond In the renovation of the Salvator Apartment Building in Roermond, a new, physically safe situation was created by intervention and paying attention to several points First of all, the access to the court is no longer accessible to the public, but privileged to the habitants of the apartments Originally the courtyard was planned with trees, but it was not executed due to the construction of a car park underneath However, to preserve this greenery, staircases covered with ivy were designed to replace the trees Secondly, the forecourt was renovated, privileging the pedestrians The existing entrance was enlarged with a new hall and functions as a space for entering, meeting and waiting for transportation Project is not public! 2002 Jo Janssen en studioivo 21

YTW2 Maastricht Bovenstebosch 6228 Maastricht This building, located in a new housing estate, is designed on a screen of nine squares, 5x5 metres each The ground level of this house contains the parent's bedroom The other level, divided over three squares at street side, contains the children's space Divided over the same zone, the basement accommodates several storage rooms and one room which is only accessible by reaching the core of the house This room is lit by the submerged patio, connected with the surrounding garden through a basin and a cascade The inner and outer spaces provide several forms of seclusion, from the open garden surrounded only by a few concrete plates, to the completely hidden patio beneath the cascade This is designed to guarantee privacy for it's habitants; the façades do not show it's floor plan Project is not public! 2000 Jo Janssen en studioivo 22

WVD Maastricht Koninksemstraat 6215 Maastricht This private house consists of two volumes, of which the head volume is divided into three different levels; one level for the children, one for living and one level reserved for the parents The second volume contains both the kitchen and the basement By using a split-level organisation, all three levels flow over, causing the children's floor to be semi-submerged and the habitable floor to be lifted up halfly, to aid the privacy of the habitants Next to the master bedroom, which is oriented on the east, the parent's floor offers a study, connected to the hall and providing a view over the nearby Belgian border Contrary to the back façade, which offers big open windows and thereby connect the building to the garden, the windows on the front façade are made of reglit to create a distance between the habitants and the visitors However, all windows are chosen to let in daylight and offer view photo: Jo Janssen en Project is not public! 2003 Jo Janssen en studioivo 23

Capucijnenhof Capucijnenstraat 6211 Maastricht The Capucijnenhof is one of the many enclosed spaces in the urban fabric of Maastricht A conglomerate of buildings of a former monastery including a chapel abut an inner courtyard shaded by 6 giant chestnut trees The existing buildings have been converted into apartments and supplemented by three new patio dwellings The three dwellings are located in the smaller part of the courtyard, which is divided in two spatially by the chapel Through the change of function the courtyard becomes a kind of extroverted introversion, an intriguing spatial paradox also exploited in the typology of the three houses The entry level a storage room, the bathroom and three bedrooms, two of which open onto a small patio in the back The upper floor contains the living area that opens to the side towards a kind of elevated patio, which in turn overlooks the courtyard again Project is not public! 1998 Main designer, Wim van den Bergh Ger Widdershoven studioivo 24

photo: Ivo Rosbeek photo: Ivo Rosbeek St Bernardinus Chapel Akerstraat BK Heerlen In 1931 architect Jos Wielders designed this chapel as an extension to the Franciscan Cloister and School by architect J Seelen The chapel is located in the main volume and has a hipped roof The corridor from the cloister, two entrances and the chapel tower are situated on the left side Together with the small room for praying on the right and the patio in between, they form an interesting and rich composition The stained glass was designed by artist Charles Eyck photo: Ivo Rosbeek Project is public! 1931 Jos Wielders studioivo 25

photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Sahil Latheef La Fortezza Offices and Housing Avenue Ceramique KV Maastricht The site of La Fortezza Offices and Housing is located at a turning point on the central axis of a newly built area The lot is triangular, one side of which is formed by a street in a residential area and the other by a motorway The issue of the corner is dealt with by use of a cylinder which, placed in the middle, articulates two linear volumes The determination of uses is expressed by the volumetric composition Hence the apartments are located in the cylindrical volume, while the offices are located in the two linear ones In its tripartite articulation of surface, the design features deep cuts that reveal loggias and an ordered repetition of windows The cylinder, being almost double the height of the linear volumes, becomes the focal point A square courtyard is delineated within the cylinder and two large portals in front and a generous cut at the rear reveal the courtyard to the exterior photo: Sahil Latheef Project is not public! 27 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Sahil Latheef Academy of Art and ure Herdenkingsplein PW Maastricht Conceived as an extension to the existing Rijkshogeschool, The Maastricht Academy for the Arts has provided new spaces for the academy of visual arts and architectural design The building makes an incision into the city's body, an entirely new and foreign organism invading its urban context; a process akin to the operation of a virus Yet it is set in a discrete, almost camouflaged relation to the city, providing an enclosed public space that achieves an intimate and secluded condition from the main area's of urban activity The project includes the renewal of the existing Academy for the Arts, together with the extension affected by two buildings Adjacent to the old building is the new structure that contains an auditorium, a library, an exhibition room, a bar and a roof garden The connecting footbridge with translucent glass brick floor and ceiling leads one through the treetops into the workshop building, accommodating wood and steel workshops photo: Sahil Latheef Public access unknown! 1993 Wiel Arets s Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht Sahil_Latheef 27

photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Sahil Latheef Arets-Sijstermans House + Studio D' Artagnanlaan 29/ CH Maastricht Set in an area of Maastricht that is dominated by villa's and suburban houses, the Arets-Sijstermans House + Studio appears, when seen from a distance, as a rectangular wooden box implanted into the ground Only the immediate surroundings and interior unveil it's complexity The complex nature of the building is due to the architectural manipulation but within a host of restrictive laws imposed on constructional projects at the site It's richness is brought to light by the complex arrangement of the terrain and the interior spaces The term 'ground floor' is abstract in this design since half of the three-storey volume is below ground For the actual ground level, the term 'garden level' is more appropiate The levels thus include the top level, the garden level and the lower level Not only is the building vertically divided into technical spaces for living and working, but horizontally as well, as it is divided into two equal halves at street level photo: Sahil Latheef Project is not public! 1997 Wiel Arets s Arets + Sijstermans Sahil_Latheef 28

Kimbria Tennis Club Mergelweg XK Maastricht Near Sint-Pietersberg in Maastricht a sports complex is located The Kimbria Tennis Club is part of this complex, which is situated next to a neighbourhood with residential houses The architect chose a simple, modest volume for the new accommodation of the tennis club The building contains utility spaces like dressing rooms, a referee room and a kitchen The public space contains a grand café and a staff room The building is designed with respect for the already existing elements in its surroundings For instance, an old tree is integrated in the design and becomes an important part of the new composition The existing height differences of the site were used to place the club house on a platform This base also functions as a terrace for the grand café and offers a nice view of the tennis courts Public access unknown! 2006 Jo Janssen en studioivo 29

photo: Miguel Loos Sound Barrier Sittard Geleen Kammilestraat Sittard This is a sound wall plus "belvedere"-pavilion along the train tracks We designed this sound protection wall as a smaller variant of the our design for Brussels We here also opted for a cheap, industrial prefabricated sound wall, with three landmark objects inserted into it These objects visually reconnect the housing neighbourhood with the agricultural fields behind the sound wall The elements are derived from one prototype, a love seat for two persons that would be rotated within the wall according to its specific surroundings This love seat is build up out of the same materials as the sound wall except for its inside, which ideally would be finished in wood A big glass screen opens up the view but retains the noise emitted by the passing trains The shape of the little belvederes are a distorted reference to the thousands of train compartments rushing along every day photo: Miguel Loos Project is public! 2006 Loos s Municipality Sittard Geleen FML 30

photo: Robin Berghuijs photo: Robin Berghuijs Trevianum School Bradleystraat CV Sittard After the two high schools in Sittard fused in 1998, an addition to the building was needed With some 2700 students and 220 members of staff, it is one of the biggest high schools in the Accordingly, Alexander Nowotny tried to design the building to feel grand on the outside, but keeping everything on a human scale on the inside, in order not to make the students feel insignificant in a building this size Usability was another main point of interest, which led to very distinct shapes and intersected spaces This resulted in the creation of meeting points, such as the atrium The use of colour was also important in establishing usability and small-scale comfort The multichromatic design reflects the versatility of the building This includes both the inside and the outside, which was done in yellow brick, orange wood and white panels for the bridge photo: Robin Berghuijs Project is public! Floor area/size m² Contractor Nowotny en Strabag Scholengroep Trevianum Robin Classes are from 08:35-16:05 The building is open until 17:00 It is a 15 minute walk from Sittard train station Alternatively, you can take bus 15 from the bus station that is adjacent to said train station and get off at the Bradleystraat stop 31
