3 photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts Centre Ypenburg Steentijdsingel SG Den Haag On the former airport Ypenburg, near Nootdorp, next to Delft, a large new neighbourhood has been built, with a clearly defined centre A series of high-rise housing combined with commercial space was designed by Rapp + Rapp and has a very urban character, in stong contrast to the mainly single-family-dwelling set up of the rest of Ypenburg The skyline of these marking towers glows in the dark and function as a beacon and general orientation as they are clearly visible from far away The design is inspired by the Toscan city of San Gimignano with its (formerly 70, now) 13 medieval towers These towers were built by upper class families who wanted to outshine each other by building an even higher tower Apart from creating a wonderful new visual identity for Ypenburg, Rapp + Rapp succeeded in making interesting public space by narrowing the streets inbetween the towers This way the dense urban feeling is enhanced Project is not public! 4 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Jeroen Musch Dynamo Hall Prof Snijdersstraat RA Delft Originally built around 1903, its purpose was to provide a dynamo testing facility for the adjoining faculty of Electrical Engineering and Physics The space is determined by the travelling crane and the tracks in the floor which used to hold the dynamos in place The combination of masonry, steel structures, high windows and skylights gives it the specific industrial character When the faculty moved to its new accommodation along the Mekelweg, the building found new uses as a carpentry workshop, sports facility, and as storage space Over the next few years, disused university buildings of the TU Delft in the area will be renovated into a hotel, apartments, student housing, restaurant and office space The Dynamo Hall, which is the first object to be restored, has been given new use as the offices of the DP6 architecture studio Alterations to the structure have been kept to a minimum to ensure that the unique atmosphere of the building is preserved, and even enhanced photo: Jeroen Musch Project is not public! 5 photo: Harry Cock photo: Christian Richters Library Delft University of Technology Prometheusplein ZC Delft The library is a building of glass and grass The University district not only gains a library that is connected to the rest of the world by modern electronic means, but also the atmosphere of a campus A vast lawn opposite the Brutalist concrete auditorium is tilted at one point; the library slides into the resulting space underneath You can literally walk across the library There are a thousand study spaces for more than three thousand students each day A cone, the symbol of technical engineering, pierces the lawn and library, attaching them like a pushpin Upon entering, visitors are drawn to the impressive wall of books that hangs in front of an expansive deep blue background The columns in the central space not only support the structure but also provide heating and ventilation, and illuminate the continuous metal ceiling that flows across all spaces Daylight enters the building through the climate-controlled glass facades, as well as through the cone in the central space photo: Harry Cock Project is public! 6 photo: Daria Scagliola photo: Daria Scagliola Department of Geotechnology Stevinweg CN Delft Delft University of Technology's new Department of Geotechnology, part of the school's faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CiTG), is housed in a building at one end of the CiTG complex, which was designed by Van den Broek en Bakema The façade was stripped and given a new glass curtain wall imprinted with a pattern of stones sawed in half Existing window cleaners' balconies were converted into bay windows equipped with built-in air conditioners Slanting lines in the façade follow the spatial organization of the interior, a landscape of laboratories, workstations and study areas Voids were added to connect existing floors and to represent transparency in the education provided here Floors were enlarged by adding a new stairwell at one end of the building Materials and colours derived from the original building were applied in a more 'virtual' manner photo: Daria Scagliola Project is public! 8 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters 186 student houses in Delft Leeghwaterstraat Delft This student housing complex was designed for the DUWO Foundation For a fast building process, a modular construction system was used Each building is six storeys tall and is designed without an apparent front or rear Three facades are finished in dark masonry laid with beards of overflowing, excess mortar, their irregular texture resulting in a distinctive play of shadows on the facade Deeply recessed window openings framed in aluminium are scattered in a playful pattern over the facades Facing the park, the three buildings feature a green facade of composite panels combined with a tubular metal frame covered in climbing plants Students can occupy the units alone or share with one other person Three rooms are grouped around a shared living room with kitchen Facilities such as the entrance, bicycle parking and garbage room are situated on the ground floor of each building photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! 11 photo: Aemelie Deelder photo: Roderick Trompert BK City Faculty of ure Julianalaan BL Delft f a472&lang=nl A fire at the TU Delft Faculty of ure on 13 May 2008 led to a new and challenging task: transforming a former public building into a temporary new building for the Faculty of ure Braaksma & Roos created a transformatory concept for this plan Within only a few months the entire building was renovated and prepared for education Several parties were invited to collaborate and design parts of the building Fokkema en was responsible at BK City for the programming, design of offices and student workshops, the library and signposting KossmandeJong made the design of the general spaces in BK City Special areas such as the 'Ketelhuis' restaurant and the interior 'street' with public areas have been designed on the principle that the experience is paramount Other parties include Octatube (two glazed atriums), 2012 s (Espressobar), MVRDV (orange tribune), Richard Hutten and Vitra (most furniture in the building) photo: Roderick Trompert Project is public! 15 photo: Rene de Wit photo: Rene de Wit Van Swinden Laboratories Thijsseweg JA Delft The building formerly housing the Faculty of Geodesy at Delft University of Technology had to be renovated to accommodate the laboratories and offices of the Institute for Metrology and Technology (NMi) Despite, or perhaps even thanks to, the restricted budget and tight planning, the renovation design has maintained a strong sustainable characteristic In addition to the fact that renovation is the ultimate form of re-use, maximum use has been made from already existing materials Thus the existing façade, including framework, was not demolished but was improved to a better performing façade which enabled a more comfortable indoor environment The glass casing around the building creates a cavity that is ventilated with a combination of natural draught and the venturi effect This helps to keep the heat out of the buildingin the summer and prevents heat loss in the winter and thus leads to considerably improved energy performance photo: Rene de Wit Project is not public! 16 photo: Paulien Borst photo: Paulien Borst Blaak 31 Blaak GA Rotterdam Blaak 31 is situated alongside Rotterdam s future Market Hall, designed by MVDRV The office building will be used mainly by the legal and tax service provider Loyens & Loeff for which Delft based interior architects Fokkema & Partners designed the interior spaces A large number of new projects in Rotterdam s Laurenskwartier and the Waterstad contribute to the current revival of the historic city of Rotterdam A new series of buildings for living and working is added to the reconstruction architecture of the 1950 s to make the centre lively and attractive again On this important site the 12 story building shows a striking form, distinctive and recognizable The volumes are slightly rotated relative to each other and shift 270 meters every three floors This form is partly determined by the distance to the Market Hall with the aim of allowing maximum light and privacy for both buildings In addition, the underground metro line affects the massing of the building photo: Paulien Borst Project is not public! 19 photo: Octatube photo: Octatube Polytechnic School INHolland Rotterdamseweg AL Delft Innovation was the driving force behind the development of the most slender glass façade in the world at the polytechnic school INHolland, Delft Aramid cables are tightening the 13m high insulating façade and are constructed in the cavity of the glass panels The double glass panels have a thickness of 54mm which makes it the most slender glass-composite façade in the world One of the three façades of the entrance is actually carried out this way INHolland is using this facade in its teaching and research Because of the legal guarantee on the glass panels, the two main facades are realized with a slightly simpler variant Here the aramid cables are placed behind the windows These façades have a thickness of 45mm! 22 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd shooting club Griffioen Forel LA Amersfoort The shooting facility is nearly fully enclosed by a sound barrier and consists of two shooting ranges of 25 meters, a shooting range of 100 meters and a simulation room The building, in which a clubroom, a boardroom, ammunition safes, a technical and sanitary facilities are located, is uniquely designed On the roadside the clubhouse serves as a recreational observatory, with an offset of 14 meters The construction lies strategically in the centre of the shooting ranges and consists of a concrete core with main girders made of steel Round steel columns are connected to the main girders Perpendicular to the main girders rest steel/concrete floors with a span of 4,8 meters The selection of the silver profiled cladding is primarily based on the expected visual effect Under the influence of the light, the neutral RAL 9006 is subject to continuous colour changes throughout the day photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! 23 photo: Hugo de Heij photo: Hugo de Heij Office WillemsenU Groenstraat CB Eindhoven Willems en U s recently moved into a striking office building - from their own drawing board - in a small park located along the Eindhoven ring road Striking because the building has, as it were, been raised and put in place, leaving the existing natural surroundings untouched From street level, the view into the park has stayed the same The building has been carefully placed in between the trees, which now lightly touch the façades, giving the users the feeling of being one with the trees The façades have been made of untreated wood In the course of time, the wood will take on a weathered grey look and allow the building to merge with the colours of the trees The large, floor-high, alternating windows emphasize the abstract character of the uplifted box and allow daylight to flood the building, while giving a serene view over the park The interaction between nature and building is also evident in the ever changing reflections of the sky and trees in the large windows photo: Norbert van Onna Project is not public! 24 photo: Peter Roos Octatube photo: Peter Roos Octatube Cardboard Structure Westblok VE Delft A multifunctional extension for Hockey & Tennis Club Ring Pass, which also houses social services like day care The extension consists of a space frame supported by steel columns This space frame is made of cardboard tubes and re-used Tuballs: steel balls used from recycled old projects It is not the first time the architects applied cardboard tubes They developed and produced as early as 2003 space frames and structures with cardboard tubes But this is the first of a permanent nature Important for the structural integrity of the cardboard tubes is not to be damp To prevent the tubes absorb moisture, the tubes are coated with a layer of polyethylene just below the outer winding There is also placed a rubber seal between the flange plate and the cylinder The choice of cardboard tubes is motivated by the desire to build sustainable If the material would be applied more frequently, the construction is cheaper than a comparable steel structure photo: Peter Roos Octatube Project is public! 27 photo: herman H van Doorn photo: Herman H van Doorn project XX Delftechpark XH Delft This sustainable, ecological building was erected in 1998 and there is a possibility that it will be dismantled in 2018 Nevertheless it is not a throw-away building, after the planned two decades, the construction materials will either have perished or can be readily dismantled and reused In 2018 the landlord will be free to erect a new building on the same location, in line with the way it will be used then Project XX is an office with a floor space of 2000 m2, surrounded by a glass façade and has a high-tech profile The building satisfies the requirements of buildings today But the main feature of the building is its sustainable quality Other used materials in the building are wood, cardboard used for the ventilation ducts and sand, which has been used for the first floor The building contains more natural materials, which break down easily Analysis shows that, when the energy required to produce the materials is taken into account, the building will consume less energy over photo: Herman Hvan Doorn Public access unknown!
