5 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Pakhuis Nautilus + IJsvis Dr Lelykade CM Den Haag The harbour of Scheveningen was originally a fishing harbour In the course of time fishery declined in importance and so did the companies As a result, many old warehouses in the Second Harbour became redundant and are now due for demolitionat the same time, there is a large demand for building ground in this area By renovating the warehouses into new office space and placing steel penthouses on their rooftops, the harbour is given a new input The construction comprises a frame of hot-rolled sections with a lightweight panel filling The penthouse was to be used as a home/office and/or studio and consists of a single space occupying both storeys Rooms like bath- and bedroom can be partitioned off by sliding partitions The residents must be able to look out from the bath over the empty space and see the sea, and once they were out of the bath they must be able to follow different routes through the house photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! 6 photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts photo: Atelier Kim Zwarts Centre Ypenburg Steentijdsingel SG Den Haag On the former airport Ypenburg, near Nootdorp, next to Delft, a large new neighbourhood has been built, with a clearly defined centre A series of high-rise housing combined with commercial space was designed by Rapp + Rapp and has a very urban character, in stong contrast to the mainly single-family-dwelling set up of the rest of Ypenburg The skyline of these marking towers glows in the dark and function as a beacon and general orientation as they are clearly visible from far away The design is inspired by the Toscan city of San Gimignano with its (formerly 70, now) 13 medieval towers These towers were built by upper class families who wanted to outshine each other by building an even higher tower Apart from creating a wonderful new visual identity for Ypenburg, Rapp + Rapp succeeded in making interesting public space by narrowing the streets inbetween the towers This way the dense urban feeling is enhanced Project is not public! 8 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Bicycle Repair Shop Zeekant AA Den Haag For the seaside location on Scheveningen boulevard the Dutch artist/architect John Körmeling (Eindhoven) has designed a pavilion which looks somewhat like a pre-war petrol station The little building is equipped with a marquee with room for a bicycle repair shop An efficiently furnished office space offers a view in all directions The roof's edge is decorated with typical bicycle words' like pedal, fresh air for your tires and friend, in little happy flickering lights John Körmeling has a very unconventional take on architecture and makes an art of building, urban planning and visual art He s blessed with an infectious imagination This is reflected in his humorous and clever solutions to all kinds of issues John Kormerling has also built the Pavilion at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai (China) with his design happy street photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is public! 10 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Souterrain Tram Tunnel Grote Marktstraat BH Den Haag Urban plans to make The Hague denser (space to expand is only found inside the city, since it s confined by sea, highway and neighbouring cities) ánd minimize traffic on street level has urged the municipality to go underground The city had a long and difficult process developing this multistory 1250 m long underground tunnel with two stops for trams combined with 500 parking spaces The construction floor was leaking and damaged the surroundings So the whole tunnel was entirely flooded to keep surrounding buildings form collapsing It got several nicknames tramtanic and swimtunnel Construction could only be finished under high pressure air to prevent the water to enter After 4 years of delay, costs largely exceeded budget (130 million euro) and the Dutch government started asking questions When finished and all problems left behind, the project won several prizes It definitely proved architecture can have a positive effect when applied to the rigor of transport pragmatism photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is public! 11 photo: Paard van Troje photo: Paard van Troje Paard van Troje Prinsegracht GA Den Haag The biggest pop venue in The Hague has a new adaptable pop and rock concert hall behind a classic exterior The Paard van Troje (Trojan Horse) can handle 1100 visitors in the main venue and a cosy 300 in the smaller hall The National Trust for Historic Buildings protected one of the two buildings that form the centre, while the other building had only its authentic facade left By removing the old construction behind the historic facade, a complicated problem of space and acoustics could be solved efficiently: the small concert hall was positioned directly behind the historic facade while the large concert hall was constructed on the backside of the two buildings and is also reachable through an adjacent street The Paard van Troje is known for its eclectic programming featuring: Pop, Rock Hiphop, Jazz, Blues, Americana, world-music, stand-up comedy and dancing sometimes even on the same evening photo: Paard van Troje Project is public! 13 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Jeroen Musch Dynamo Hall Prof Snijdersstraat RA Delft Originally built around 1903, its purpose was to provide a dynamo testing facility for the adjoining faculty of Electrical Engineering and Physics The space is determined by the travelling crane and the tracks in the floor which used to hold the dynamos in place The combination of masonry, steel structures, high windows and skylights gives it the specific industrial character When the faculty moved to its new accommodation along the Mekelweg, the building found new uses as a carpentry workshop, sports facility, and as storage space Over the next few years, disused university buildings of the TU Delft in the area will be renovated into a hotel, apartments, student housing, restaurant and office space The Dynamo Hall, which is the first object to be restored, has been given new use as the offices of the DP6 architecture studio Alterations to the structure have been kept to a minimum to ensure that the unique atmosphere of the building is preserved, and even enhanced photo: Jeroen Musch Project is not public! 14 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Lyceum Ypenburg Laan van Kans VB Den Haag At Ypenburg, the new branch of the Atlas College of Rijswijk occupies a characteristic location at the entrance to this brand-new residential area The programme has been divided over four floors linked in space by large voids and staircases The main plan of the building is straightforward, consisting of a ring of classrooms around a number of large lobbies Daylight enters the spaces within the ring through skylights and patios Within its deceptively simple and clear exterior, the building manages to create a many-faceted world of light, air and space that does justice to the theme of the Atlas College, stirring splendour Project is public! 15 photo: Harry Cock photo: Christian Richters Library Delft University of Technology Prometheusplein ZC Delft The library is a building of glass and grass The University district not only gains a library that is connected to the rest of the world by modern electronic means, but also the atmosphere of a campus A vast lawn opposite the Brutalist concrete auditorium is tilted at one point; the library slides into the resulting space underneath You can literally walk across the library There are a thousand study spaces for more than three thousand students each day A cone, the symbol of technical engineering, pierces the lawn and library, attaching them like a pushpin Upon entering, visitors are drawn to the impressive wall of books that hangs in front of an expansive deep blue background The columns in the central space not only support the structure but also provide heating and ventilation, and illuminate the continuous metal ceiling that flows across all spaces Daylight enters the building through the climate-controlled glass facades, as well as through the cone in the central space photo: Harry Cock Project is public! 16 photo: João Morgado photo: Naomi Schiphorst City Hall & Central Library Spui BT Den Haag In the heart of the 12 storey complex is the 50m high internal atrium: one of the largest indoor public spaces in Europe known as the Citizens Hall All local municipal offices, central and public desk-facilities are grouped around the atrium The elements of this mega-facility are combined with a semi-independent rental office building at its north-eastern end and extensive shopping frontage throughout the ground floor The central library has its own entrance and is located at the extreme northwestern corner, where its dynamic form imparts a strong character to the principal plaza Inside and out, the structure is clad in white, porcelain-enamelled metal panels, measuring 85 by 180 cm Subsequently, the whole building is set up by a multiple of 45 cm The glass roof of the atrium is supported by free-spanning laminated timber trusses incorporating sunscreens, maintenance walkways, and light fixtures The inhabitants of The Hague have nicknamed it: the ice-palace photo: João Morgado Project is public! 17 photo: Christian Richters photo: Luuk Kramer Forensic Institute Laan van Ypenburg GB Den Haag Located in Ypenburg, The Hague, the NFI is a glazed volume in a steel box set in a typical Dutch motorway landscape The building is a high security bulwark and an eye-catcher It yields a corridor spread over four floors with cellular offices and laboratories Size and location of each laboratory can be adapted to suit changing demands and conditions The NFI has been cut open horizontally and seems to accommodate a glass volume The steel box acts as solar shading Light penetration is different on each side The glass volume seems to lie just off centre because the steel cantilevers around the building are not equally deep The architectural and spatial expressions of the interior are determined by material and colour Form and space are virtually without properties, except in the part adjacent to the entrance, where an auditorium, library and conference room are stacked on top of one another photo: Luuk Kramer Project is not public! 18 photo: Archipelontwerpers De Baljurk Kettingstraat 2511 AM Den Haag Archipelontwerpers produced a design for the renovation of 8 shops in the historical centre of The Hague The street where they stand formed an exception in the otherwise beautifully refurbished city centre: the dilapidated dwellings above the shops stood empty and many of the buildings were boarded up; the public space was neglected The client, property developer Geste, wanted to build something that would give the neighbourhood a boost The façades of the buildings were restored and behind them new dwellings were built, accessed from a raised terrace Below ground level is a large retail space with a flexible floor plan The 8th, corner building has a new glass curtain wall draped in a golden steel mesh that lends the whole project an exclusive air Attention-getting was not the only reason for choosing a sculptural form - it also alludes to the formal idiom of the Art Nouveau architecture in the immediate vicinity and to the sinuous course of the stream that once flowed here Public access unknown! 2005 Archipelontwerpers Geste groep Kirsten_Hannema photo: Archipelontwerpers Located on the corner of Kettingstraat and Achterom in The Hague's city centre 18

25 photo: Peter de Ruig photo: Peter de Ruig Flat-Iron Housing Rijswijkseplein LR Den Haag On this incredibly small plot - just 30 by 35 metres - a 130 metre-high residential tower block, the highest in The Hague is built Het Strijkijzer (the flat-iron) has 351 housing units: three hundred studios for young people and 51 luxury rental apartments The building has a number of sun lounges, two separate entrances and a total of five lifts, a trendy Grand Café, a launderette and workspaces And a special glass panorama lift that goes straight to the terrace on the 41st floor After the top of the building was finished, soon the building started whistling in the wind The crown of the flat-iron had to be altered to find a solution to the noise A logbook was kept, of the days and times the building started whistling, and what the wind speed and directions were With sound recordings the frequency spectrum was researched By means of the specifications of the building and the outcome of the research, a fitting solution will be applied Project is not public! 29 photo: Peter de Ruig photo: Peter de Ruig The National Theatre Schouwburgstraat VA Den Haag The housing of the National Theatre in The Hague required renovated and adaptation because of overdue maintenance work and lack of space The new development replaces the existing plots 6 and 8 and is an intense puzzle The building has 2 bridging constructions: the rehearsal room on the side of the Schouwburgstraat and the office that protrudes in the direction of the Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Theatre) across the loading and unloading quay The main entrance is located under the glass stairwell, with direct access form the Schouwburgstraat, which forms the visual counter balance for the horizontal concrete Ministry of Finance The structure of the building is compact with space and in-between space The challenge here was to design this spatial puzzle to literally and figuratively create room and an aura towards the street Opposite the horizontal mass housing the Ministry of Finance the light radiating glass tower will stand as a beacon Project is public!
