1 ARCH4601 Topical Studies in Architectural History and Theory ARC 4601A ASPECT OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE Course Title: Himalayan Vernacular Architecture and Urban History: from House to Monument, Village to City ASSOCIATED SUMMER PROGRAM Course Code: to be Confirmed Course Title: Conservation and Environmental Design in the Himalayan Region: Leh, LADAKH, Northern India, 2012 June [See summer program proposal] Instructor: Maggie Hui Mei Kei Mon 9:30 12:15 Location: TBC COURSE DESCRIPTION (TO BE FINALISED) This course adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of vernacular architecture and built environment of the Himalayan region. To understand the value of architectural heritage in this region, one shall always consider issues driven by culture, geography, society, religion, and the dynamics driven by them in each case. Vernacular Architecture at the Himalayan region offer a wide spectrum of studying how the culture of living give rise to various form of Architecture and the settlement form. Traditional construction and material also offer good resources in understanding the environmental aspect. The course introduces cases across the Tibetan Plateau and its neighboring culture. Apart from the Tibetan region, the other neighboring cultures which will be touched upon are such as Nepal, Bhutan, Northern India and the periphery among the Chinese, Tibetan and Muslim at Qinghai, Gansu region.

2 Students will be encouraged to investigate their own cases; utilizing different resources including literature, films, pop media, and photographic archives, as well as theoretical readings. Objective To raise an awareness on the importance of Asian architecture; To enable a broader perspective and deeper understanding in the social, cultural and historical forces which together shape the wide range of Asia built environment with a focus on the Himalayan region; To be able to indentify questions and conduct independent investigation on Asian architectural heritage related issues through critical readings. [Budget] HKD $1,500 total per student Field Trip A weekend fieldtrip to a vernacular architectural site in Guangdong / Fujian area will be organized before Chinese New Year holiday. The budget follows last year s course. Total cost per student to be approximate HKD $1,500. The aim of this trip is to give student first hand experience in examining vernacular architectural site dealing with traditional construction, settlement form as well as the issue of being a heritage. Summer Program A summer program which will be held in Leh, Ladak in norther India will act as the extension of this course. Class paper presentation. (Group assignment)

3 2. Major assignment (Essay / measured drawings) I. Class paper presentation Class presentation (2 students in a group) How the Architecture and Built environment of your chosen topic reflects below issues in the context of Asia culture and society, such as: - social issues reflecting in spatial usage and other architectural means - historical transformation - cultural value, concepts - Symbolism and meanings: form, structure, details, festivals, ritual activities - representation, how they are being read and represent - Tangible and intangible quality of the architecture You can also use film footage, documentary, academic book, or other audio visual reference as a starting point. However, one must expand from that and find related architectural issues. The presentation shall last between minutes. Please be noted that however this shall not be a film study and further references through literature research is required. One to two groups in each class will be presenting from onwards. The topic of the class paper required approval. One A4 page of Abstract needed to be prepared for the class as handout on that day. The PowerPoint file and the electronic copy of the abstract shall be submitted afterwards. The presenters will also lead the discussion for 5 minutes after the presentation. Fellow students will be asked to grade the performance of the class paper presentation. II. Major Assignment: (Two Options) A. Essay, B. Architectural drawings (hand drawn) Essay topic, abstract (less than 300 words), Drawing proposal need to be submitted before to get approval. A. The essay topic can be an extension of your class paper presentation; however it shall deviate from the original group work. Depth of research will be taken into consideration for grading if you choose to extend the class paper topic. Workload will be judged equivalent for students work choose to work on separate topics. (Word limits ) B. Architectural drawings - Architectural drawings with 500 words short essay (require submitting draft ) Aim of the drawings is to show your understanding of the space and the construction of the building (details, decoration, and material etc) - Elevation, section, axonometric, Floor plan etc - The topic of the architectural drawings can only proceed upon approval. - Format of the drawings will be announced during class. - Photocopy of the dwg references shall be submitted together with source of the image. Eg. Book reference SUBMISSION DATES I Class paper presentation, 1 A4 report also submitted on (TBC) II Major Assignment on 22.04(TBC) (Both original copy and electronic copy on CD Rom)

4 ASSEMENT SCHEME Participation (discussion and attendants) 10% Fieldtrip presentation 20% Class paper presentation + one page report 30% Final Assignment 40% ARC 4601A ASPECT OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE, BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY CHAOZHOU FIELDTRIP January Maggie Hui Locating in southern China and northern part of Guangdong: Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang together form the greater Chaozhou which is renowned for its distinct culture from other county in the Guangdong province. Chaozhou has long been a prefecture city throughout history Traditional courtyard house complex in an extensive form built by single clan are easily found in the area. In the early twenties century, the trading ports set up at Chaozhou and Shantou have also brought wealth and outside influence to the place in resulting numerous arcade Street (overhang shop house) with western decoration motif and modern urban form. The returning Overseas Chinese also built large mansion merging the western taste with traditional Chinese courtyard form. In further

These various types of dwellings shall provide a good variation for the study group to look at the architecture of dwelling from the perspective of people, society, history and geography. In the last 10 year, traditional dwelling has started its tourism development which leads to the debate on the issue on conservation, tourism and village development. These very different cases offer a good opportunity for the class to view traditional architecture in the Asia context where livelihood of the people and the society continue redefine the meaning of vernacular architecture without architect. PROGRAMME The programme includes visits various types of traditional dwellings in Chaozhou and Shantou. I NVESTIGATION In this field study, groups are divided to investigate five aspects dealing with the different dwellings as visited. The study group shall gather architectural info regarding these issues through interview, diagrammatic drawings, sketches, photo observation ect Presentation in a form of a workshop will be followed in the next class. Maximum length: 10 minutes each group.
