3 Architectural Fabrication Advanced design and digital manufacturing for architecture Director: Paolo Cascone / COdesignLab Teaching staff: Paolo Cascone, Max Romero, Andrea Giglio, Flavio Galdi INTRODUCING THE COURSE The course responds to the growing demand of advanced design connected to the digital fabrication and self-construction for an ecofriendly architecture. We believe that the time is right to explore possible new economies based on an advanced manufacturing for the building industry by drawing new professional poles through customized solutions that break down the barriers between designers and manufacturers. This training proposal intends to take advantage of the real opportunities of the new scenarios that affect the third industrial revolution by developing a methodology for making design architecture. For this reason, the course combines design culture with that of traditional physical prototyping by integrating technology and digital manufacturing technologies. Experimenting with natural materials systems it is put at the centre of a constructive process that can generate environmental performance aimed at energy saving. The course is structured as an interdisciplinary laboratory where theoretical moments alternates to production with the initial aim to realize an off-grid living module totally self-fabricated. To achieve this goal the course is structured in three phases, the first phase of advanced design, the second of making architecture and the third of self-construction. 4 COURSE GOALS AND CONTENTS The educational objectives of the course are to provide, through the creation of an architectural scale prototype 1-1, the basic elements of advanced digital design methods and manufacturing processes for architecture. For this reason the course is divided into 3 phases: 1. advanced design 80 hours (32 hr course 48 hr workshop) The goal of this first phase is to develop a numbers of concept designs from which will be selected the draft housing module to be realized in the later stages. The project becomes the starting point to learn parametric design methods and tools and rapid prototyping. They will be taught modules: parametric modelling, digital tectonics, material system and basic digital fabrication. 2. making architecture 80 hours (24 hr course 56 hr workshop) The selected concept will be tested on structural and environmental performance. In this phase, through a collaborative approach, students deepen the construction techniques and digital fabrication tools (press 3d, cnc, numerical control arm, etc.) for the realization of the components (frame, walls, coatings, etc.) of the architectural. The components are then manufactured in the scale 1-1 with natural materials to test the assembly logics. In this case it will be experimented with the use of Arduino possible for intelligent façade solutions. They will be taught modules: design to make, physical computing e advanced digital fabrication. 3. self-construction 80 hours workshop / construction school In the third phase the course is transforms into a technologically advanced construction site. The students will work in teams to the manufacturing of components of the architectural work and its assembly process. This phase will be in close contact with the partner companies that provide the building materials and with it will be activate a partnership for the construction of a range of micro-architectures to be proposed on the market.

5 INFORMATIONS Training hours The academic program includes a total of 400 hours in this way distributed: n. 80 hours of classroom teaching n. 100 hours of practical laboratory n. 100 study n. 120 hours of school yard Selection The course has a limited number (10 participants). Students will be selected based on the resume / portfolio and order of arrival of requests. Also provided is an interview with the DAMA team aimed at better understanding of the course content and analysis of curriculum aspiring student. The course is activated with a minimum of 10 participants. Entry requirements Access to the course is reserved for: - Year students of the degree course in Architecture, Design, Engineering or equivalent foreign diplomas - Graduates with a diploma degree in Architecture, Design, Engineering or equivalent foreign diplomas - Makers / craftsmen Fee Total fee amount is Eur ,00 (excluding IVA). 6 COURSE DIRECTOR PAOLO CASCONE Paolo Cascone, born in Napoli, grew up among Europe, Africa and western India. He completed his study at Architectural Association in London. In 2007 he founded CodesignLab in Paris, where he taught as associate professor at Ecole Speciale d'architecture. In recent years Paolo focused on applied research and teaching, developing interdisciplinary processes including parametric design, digital fabrication and self-construction. In 2013 he founded the Urban FabLab in Naples, an urban ecology and digital fabrication lab. In 2014 he participates with the project African Fabbers the biennial of Marrakech and Dakar. In 2016 invited to participate in the Triennale with performative ceramic project in the Sempering exhibition edited by Cino Zucchi and Luisa Collina. His projects are published in the best sector journals including Domus, Mark, Abitare, Architecture d Auhurd-hui, l Arca, A+U etc.
