2 2011 AIA WESTERN MOUNTAIN REGION CONFERENCE Hosted by AIA Las Vegas October 6-8 CONNECTIONS: Physical Abstract Creative In 2011 AIA Las Vegas will host the annual Western Mountain Region Conference where attendees from all over the six-state region Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada will attend. The theme of the conference is Connections: Physical Abstract Creative and will explore how the states of the Western Mountain Region are bound to each other in tangible and conceptual ways. We are connected through the physical concerns for water, energy, transportation - the abstract unions of culture, traditions and philosophy - and through the creative visions of resourceful and imaginative design. CONNECTIONS is a celebration of all that unites us, and will open discussions on our shared potential, values, expectations and future. REGISTRATION PACKET
3 8:00AM 9:00AM CONNECTIONS - KEYNOTE SPEAKER Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA Brooks + Scarpa Ordinary & Extraordinary The work of Lawrence Scarpa has redefined the role of the architect to produce some of the most remarkable and exploratory work today. He does this, not by escaping the restrictions of practice, but by looking, questioning and reworking the very process of design and building. Each project appears as an opportunity to rethink the way things normally get done --- as Lawrence aptly describes: making the ordinary extraordinary. This produces entirely inventive work; work that is quite difficult to categorize. It is environmentally sustainable, but not sustainable design; it employs new materials, digital practices and technologies, but is not tech or digital; it is socially and community conscious, but not politically correct. Rather, it is deeply rooted in conditions of the everyday, and works with our perception and preconceptions to allow us to see things in new ways. Bio: Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA - Over the last ten years Mr. Scarpa has received over fifty major design awards including eighteen National AIA Awards, 2005 Record Houses, 2003 Record Interiors, 2003 Rudy Bruner Prize, four AIA COTE Top Ten Green Building Awards and was a finalist for the World Habitat Award, one of ten firms selected worldwide. In 2004 The Architectural League of New York selected him as an Emerging Voice in architecture. His work was recently exhibited at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. He has been Featured in NEWSWEEK and appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. In 2009 Interior Design Magazine honored him with their Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2010, his firm Brooks + Scarpa (formerly Pugh + Scarpa) was awarded the National and State of California Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects. 9:15AM 11:30AM World Market Center Mark Roddy, AIA, LEED AP - SmithGroup - Limited to 100 registrants Urban Ideas for the Western Landscape Showing a variety of scaled work from residential to high-rise buildings, Mark will share his pragmatic but creative approach in responding to regional contexts and environmental influences. Inspired by the western landscape he grew up in and influenced by his urban design studies in Los Angeles, Mark s interests focus on buildings and spaces that make the most of their project site and beyond. This presentation will be given atop the World Market Center with a panoramic view of the downtown Las Vegas skyline and an overview of the new Symphony Park project, site of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, and the Gehry-designed Lou Ruvo Cleveland Clinic. Bus boards at 9:30AM Travel time to the top of the World Market Center is 30 minutes. Presentation will begin at 10:00 and end at 11:00, when buses will be re-boarded for the return trip. 4 9:15AM 10:15AM PHYSICAL CONNECTIONS - TRANSPORTATION Jacob Snow, Director, Regional Transportation Commission 1 AIA LU/HSW Planes, Trains and Automobiles - The Interstate Connection Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona are the only two cities with populations greater than 1 million that are not connected by an interstate. The proposed Interstate 11 in the US 93 corridor will make that connection and create a link to improve transportation and accommodate freight traffic throughout the region. Interstate 11 would eventually extend up to Reno into Oregon and Washington and will improve transportation throughout the Western Mountain Region. Mr. Snow will also discuss the Super Highway that is planned to connect Canada to Mexico through the western United States and what this means for our region. Bio: Jacob Snow - Jacob Snow became the General Manager of the Regional Transportation Commission in July of 1999, and has experienced some of this city s most challenging growth issues. He is a member of the American Public Transportation Association Board of Directors. He coordinated the public/private partnership culminating in construction of the Las Vegas monorail project. He oversaw the first fare increase on the Citizens Area Transit (CAT) bus system, resulting in the first addition of a bus route since He spearheaded the effort to bring the first bus rapid transit system to the United states; the system called MAX, the Metropolitan Area Express. He successfully conducted agency reorganization, improving operating efficiency. He managed the redeployment of the CAT Para transit fleet, resulting in improved service, zero denials frequently and reduced costs. He organized a needs assessment group made up of public works and planning experts throughout Southern Nevada to develop a list of needed transportation projects in the Las Vegas valley. The result was a list of $7i.6 billion of unfounded needs for the next twenty year. He has been honored by the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations with a national Leadership Award, and he is the recipient of the AIA Nevada Sustainable Practice Award. 10:30AM 11:30AM ABSTRACT CONNECTIONS THE NEW ECONOMY Craig Galati, AIA, Principal Lucchesi Galati 1 AIA LU Welcome to the New Economy Rise of the Right Brain Business has changed virtually overnight, and it will not return to business as usual. How do individuals and organizations adapt quickly to the realities of a new economy? An interstate agreement governing the availability of surplus water, the result of years of tough negotiations, had just been inked, providing stability to the region s water supply. Before the ink was dry, however, drought struck the Colorado River, causing Lake Mead s elevation to plummet and undermining the newly forged pact. The one useful remnant from the surplus agreement was a paradigm shift in interstate relations. Long battle-hardened competitors for a scarce resource, the Colorado River Basin states had discovered the benefits of cooperation. The agreements that have followed -- including a shared shortage agreement, water banking arrangements and shared resource projects such as the Yuma Desalting Plant -- recognize the interdependent nature of the Basin States and strive for mutually assured survival rather than the destructive confrontations of the past. Given the specter of climate change and its implications for the Colorado River, this new blueprint for success will undoubtedly prove to be the key to the region s water security in the decades to come. Ms. Mulroy s presentation will be made at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve. The bus will leave the at 1:45PM Travel time will be from 1:45PM to 2:15PM. Presentation will be from 2:15PM to 3:15PM, providing approximately 20 minutes for exploring the Springs Preserve before boarding the bus for the return to Fifth Street School. Fay Jones Chair of Architecture at the University of Arkansas and the AC Martin Chair in Architecture at the University of Southern California. 12:30PM 1:30PM CONNECTIONS LUNCH SPEAKER David Zach Futurist Designs on the Future: Trends, Traditions & Choices The future depends upon design and architects need to understand how important their role is building that future. Some have said that future requires us to be open to change, but Futurist David Zach disagrees. It s not that simple. In order to build a good future we must know how to hold on to the best of the past and make sure we learn from the lessons of history. It should be clear that not all change is progress and not all tradition is outdated. Survival and progress depends on our ability to choose between change and tradition. Architects are some of the best prepared to make those choices clear for others and it s time that they regained leadership positions for shaping the choices we must make. This presentation is a fascinating (and slightly irreverent) look at the trends and traditions affecting design and the roles that architects, designers and planners can have over the next ten years. Bio: David Zach, Futurist - David Zach is one of the few professionally trained futurists on this planet, having earned a master s degree in Studies of the Future from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Of course that was way back in 1981, so it s pretty much a history degree by now. In his work, he s not stuck on the future and is always searching for old ideas that stand the test of time. Instead of telling people what to think about the future, he wants to help them understand how to think about the future. He thinks fascinating forecasts can be fun, but thoughtful, long-term choices are better. Since 1987, he mostly sits and read everything he can, studying both trends and traditions and trying to identify their implications. He gives talks about 50 times a year and really wishes he would write more. He is the author of two books, so far. His latest book, Worth Remembering: the future value of old ideas was published in 2008.

Curtis Fentress, FAIA, RIBA, was honored in 2010 with the AIA Thomas Jefferson Award and the WMR Silver Medal. 3:00PM 4:00PM Jim Richärd, AIA Authentic Associations In the search for authenticity architects strive to develop connections to the ideas, context, function and environment of the project. These frame and reinforce the connectivity with the people, and the unique sense of place of our region. Jim Richard s work demonstrates the importance of identifying the authentic associations necessary to quality design. Over his 26 years of experience in planning, design and construction he has developed a special sensitivity to the context of the region and environment, and will share his search for authenticity through his work. Bio: Jim Richärd, AIA - James Richard, AIA is the architectural design principal and a founding partner of Richärd + Bauer Architecture, a studio based, architectural and interiors practice focusing primarily on Higher Education Research, Laboratories, and Public + Academic Library Design. The firm was founded in 1996 by James Richärd AIA and Kelly Bauer, FIIDA.
