M O N I C A P I N E D O Director West Coast Safe Surfin Foundation From , Monica E. Pinedo served as the Special Operations Administrator for the Family Violence Operations Division of the Los Angeles City Attorney s Office. Monica has a diverse community focused background, with over 19 years of community engagement experience. She served the City of Los Angeles for over 14 years, including two Mayoral Administrations. Monica administered programs related to the prevention of cybercrime, truancy, child abuse, elder fraud and domestic violence. To date, Monica has trained over 20,000 youth statewide on internet safety and current issues in cybercrime. November of 2015, Monica joined the non-profit sector and now serves as the Workforce Development Department Manager for AltaMed Health Services Corp F R A N C E L L A A G U I L A R Municipal Relationship Manager Republic Services Francella Aguilar is currently a Municipal Relationship Manager for Republic Services, a solid waste and recycling company. She has been a proud member of the Republic team for over 11 years now. Francella came to this country at the age of 13 years old, as a young girl she came to embrace her new country of opportunities, and today is a professional woman and a devoted mother, with a husband and 3 sons. She enjoys camping and spending quality time with her family. R O S A C A R R I L L O PUENTE and AB540 Counselor Cerritos College Rosa Carrillo is a first generation Chicana to graduate from college with a Bachelor s and Master s degree. Rosa grew up in Wilmington, California and went to school in San Diego. She is currently the PUENTE and AB540 DREAM counselor. Rosa became a counselor to empower Latino students to achieve their higher education goals. N A Y E L I D UEÑ AS Program Director Cerritos College
5 M O N I C A V I L L A M I L CEO and Operations Director Re/Max Innovative Monica Villamil, a young business entrepreneur, immigrated from Durango, Mexico to Los Angeles at the age of sixteen. She never imagined the success that awaited her. Monica and her husband, owners of Re/Max Innovative, have around 25 agents and 4 full-time employees. Monica currently runs the Operations/ Administrative Department, and in 2010 she became an investor. By purchasing homes and remodeling them, she has been able to provide jobs to contractors, handymen, architects, housekeepers, receptionist, bookkeeper, transaction coordinator, and property acquisition staff. Aside from business, Monica has a beautiful family with her husband Eloy and 3 children: Joshua (9), Elisa (6), and Benjamin (4). Her biggest realization is to be able to balance being a mother, wife, and contributing citizen. She hopes to continue being an inspiration to the Hispanic community, and wants others to do what they love. Always have faith and declare what you want out of life, as if it already is, said Monica. M R S. S A N D R A T H O R S T E N SON Superintendent, RET. Whittier Union High School District Sandra Sanchez Thorstenson retired on June 2016 after fifteen years as Superintendent of the Whittier Union High School District having spent her entire 39-year career in Whittier Union. Prior to becoming Superintendent, Mrs. Thorstenson served as Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, High School Principal, Assistant Principal and Teacher. She graduated from Whittier High School and her daughter graduated from the school district as well. The District s commitment to do Whatever It Takes to ensure student achievement for all students has resulted in state and national recognition. Most importantly, Whittier Union has narrowed the achievement gap from 35% to 9% and has proven on behalf of their students that demographics do not determine destiny. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Soroptimist International of Whittier and is an associate partner with Leadership Associates. H O N O R A B L E M A R I S A P E R EZ Trustee Area 4 Cerritos College Marisa Perez was elected to the Cerritos College Board of Trustees in November 2012 for a term that concludes November She represents Trustee Area 4, which includes Hawaiian Gardens and portions of the cities of Lakewood, Bellflower, Cerritos, and Long Beach. Perez currently serves as the Board Vice President and was Board President in Perez serves in various capacities within the communities served by Cerritos College. She is the Vice President of the Esther Lindstrom Elementary School PTA and a member of the School Site Committee. She is a Board of Director for Friends of the Lakewood Libraries and Lakewood Little League. Perez holds a Masters of Public Policy degree from USC and a B.S. in Bioengineering from Texas A&M University. She is a resident and member of the Lakewood community. Perez s children attend school within the Bellflower Unified School District. M A R I A M A L A G O N, P H. D. Assistant Professor of Sociology California State University, Fullerton Maria C. Malagon was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Buena Park. She is the daughter of Mexican migrants. Dr. Malagon is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at California State University, Fullerton. She received her Ph.D in Education at UCLA. Her research interests examine various segments along the Latina/o educational pipeline, specifically by using feminist analysis to interrogate how discourses of racialized femininities and masculinities manifest in educational policy and practice. She has a professional background in gender education programs, high school outreach, and juvenile delinquency prevention and intervention programs. Her published work can be found in several education, social justice and legal studies journals. She is currently working on a book that explores the experiences of Mexican American girls in a California reformatory school during the 1940s.
6 A L M A H E R N Á N D E Z Political Director SEIU, California Alma Hernández is the Political Director for SEIU California, an organization dedicated to electing candidates and passing policies that benefit SEIU s 700,000 members and their families in California. SEIU represents janitors, home care workers, social workers, professors, school workers, health care workers, and city, county, and state workers. It is the largest labor union in the state and has been a powerful political voice in California for working people. Ms. Hernandez is the first Latina to occupy the critical role of political director responsible for developing and implementing winning strategies in statewide races, legislative races, initiative races, and legislative campaigns. She oversees a clinical staff of about thirty bicultural-bilingual mental health professionals and an outreach program for domestic violence and sexual assault delivering services in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Dr. Nogales is President of the Association for Latino Mental Health Awareness (ALMHA) in Los Angeles & Orange County, which is a community coalition of mental health providers, including hospitals, clinics, private and non-profit organizations. She is on the Board of Directors of Las Comadres para las Americas, an international Latina women s networking organization. D R. R A C H E L S T E W A R D Medical Director Family Planning Associates Dr. Rachel Steward attended Haverford College where she studied Russian Literature and Language. Dr. Steward completed her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the University of Vermont in She went on to complete her Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/Gyn) residency at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. She came to Los Angeles to join the Fellowship in Family Planning at LAC+USC Medical Center, which she completed along with her Masters Degree in clinical investigations in July Dr. Steward has worked on the clinical faculty in the OB/Gyn department at LAC+USC where her specialties were family planning services and care for vulnerable populations of women. She currently serves as the medical director for Family Planning Associates Women's Health where she oversees the general gynecology, primary care, prenatal care, and family planning services provided at twenty-one locations across the state of California. A N A N O G A L E S, P H. D.
