photo: VPRO Villa VPRO Sumatralaan GP Hilversum The VPRO is a public broadcasting corporation and operates in various media, producing radio and television programmes, filling digital theme channels, operating an innovative website, publishing a programme guide and organising cultural activities The VPRO has a rather special position within the broadcasting system: Enthusiasm, curiosity and quality has more value than ratings The VPRO takes its public task seriously but with slight stubbornness, purposefully choosing those programmes and topics that the other broadcasting companies pass over It aims to surprise, inspire awe, enrage and inform, as well as touch people, make them think, laugh and put things into perspective It provides the opportunity to explore, but also to see the world around them, the VPRO is in continuous dialogue with its articulate and critical target group This pioneering and spirit manifests itself in more than just the programming; the Villa VPRO is a physical embodiment of all the above elements photo: Bjorn Utpott m² Structural engineer Structural engineer MVRDV Arup Pieters Bouwtechniek VPRO MI_MOA 5

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst University Library UBU Heidelberglaan CS Utrecht This black box is both praised and hated Let s hear the architect: It is a place where people can work in a concentrated fashion, but also one where they can meet others without the need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the building radiates The book depots divide the space into zones interconnected by stairs and slopes All in black figured concrete on which a partly double-glazed facade to which a silk-screened figurative pattern has been applied in order to let natural light in Based on the idea that silent communication is important in a building where there is hardly any talking, the atmosphere had emphasis on creating a sense of security That was essential for choosing a black interior A light, shiny floor provides enough reflection to illuminate the books and white tables make it possible to read The bar, lounge, reception, auditorium, desks, are all fitted with red rubber, thereby breaking down the mono-functionality of the library program m² Wiel Arets s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst mo-fr: sa: su: From Utrecht Central Station take bus 11 or 12 towards "De Uithof", the university campus 6

photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Bjorn Utpott Minnaert Leuvenlaan CE Utrecht All circulation space of this central university building has been concentrated in one big hall on the "piano nobile" of the building It constitutes the communal gathering place and living room for all staff and students in this part of the campus and gives access to the restaurant, the study centre and the laboratories In the middle the hall has a large pond of 10 x 50 metres that collects the rainwater and is used as a cooling device for the building This hall is actually outside The facade of the building is clad with undulating sprayed concrete of pigmented red earth color The Minnaert Building is part of the Faculties of Geosciences, Physiscs and Astronomy Hence the brown earthy colors on the outside, and the cave-like feeling that arouses in the central hall Profdr Marcel Gilles Jozef Minnaert (Brugge, 1893) was astronomic and chemo-physicist photo: Bjorn Utpott m² Interior architect, Contractor Structural engineer Neutelings Riedijk MI_MOA JP van Eesteren ABT Universiteit van Utrecht To get to and around the University campus, you can take bus city lines number 11 and 12 from Utrecht Central Station 9

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Viktor Ramos Educatorium Leuvenlaan CE Utrecht Situated in the centre of the University Campus the Uithof, just outside the centre of Utrecht, this building is most famous for its use of concrete The concrete construction of the building folds and forms the floor, wall and ceiling in one curved motion In the ceiling, steel reinforcement bars emerge from the exposed concrete slab Steel and concrete dissociate allowing each material to work at optimum efficiency: the 20cm thick concrete slab is made to span 21 metres "Composed of two planes which fold to accommodate a range of distinct programs including an outdoor plaza, two lecture halls, cafeteria and a testing facility Planes interlock to create a single trajectory in which the entire university experience socialization, learning, examination is encapsulated" Bad detailing or lack of proper maintenance has caused the facade to look old and worn out, even after a couple of years photo: Piotr Krajewski m² Structural engineer Contractor OMA - Rem Koolhaas ABT BAM University of Utrecht NGHM The building is public and open to visit freely, at workdays on office hours For guided tours, contact the Utrecht ure Centre at aorta@aortanu and tours@aortanu or call +31 (0) Buslines 11, 12 and 12-S go from Utrecht Central Station to the Uithof university campus Call the reception of the Educatorium at +31 (0)

photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Naomi Schiphorst Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Piet Blom City of Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven The show-cube at number 70 is open daily, from 11:00-17:00 h Entrance: 2 euro For more information see the website wwwkubuswoningnl Take the Subway or train to Station Blaak Or tram

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Kunsthal Westzeedijk AA Rotterdam A complex, bold and amazing exposition space, a museum without collection, the Kunsthal presents culture in the widest sense of the word: old art, new art, design, photography - from elitist to popular The site presented a dual condition: the southern edge is bordered by the Maasboulevard, a 'highway' on top of a dike The northern side, a level lower, faces the Museum Park - conventional contemplation With these given, and the fact that these crossings would divide the square site into 4 parts, the challenge was: how to design a museum as 4 autonomous projects - a sequence of contradictory experiences which would nevertheless form a continuous spiral circuitthe pedestrian ramp is split, with a glass wall separating the outside, which is open to the public, from the inside, which is part of the circuit A second ramp, running parallel and reversed, is terraced to accommodate an auditorium, and beneath it the restaurant On the level where the 2 ramps cross, is the main entrance photo: Rotterdam Marketing m² Structural engineer OMA - Rem Koolhaas Arup City of Rotterdam Naomi Tuesday - Saturday 10 am to 5 pm Sundays and public holidays 11 am to 5 pm Closed on Mondays, Queensday (April 30th), Christmas Day and New Year's Day Tours and special receptions on request More information and reservations: apply to Buro Mooi Gedaan: > phone: > mooigedaan@planetnl Public transport: We advice you to come by public transport The Kunsthal Rotterdam is located in Museumpark, a 20-minute walk from the main railway station (Centraal Station) Or take a number 5 tram to Willemsplein (stop Vasteland), or a number 8 tram to Spangen (stop Erasmus MC) Metro stations Eendrachtsplein and Leuvehaven are a 5-minute walk away 17

photo: Dan Bagnall De Citadel Bordes 1 NL-1020 Almere The beginning idea of the plan of OMA for the Almere centre, 1994, was based on the superposition of uses, with an emphasis on pedestrians and the buildings This block, which is home to the main commercial centre is paradigmatic regarding its variety of uses, from the car park and the underground infrastructures up to the inhabited green covering Portzamparc's development of the Master Plan guidelines has a few changes and the deck is, after all, not a public space, but a bonus for the residents of the terraced houses and the tower The plan's proposal to recreate the density of a medieval city with regard to population and combination of uses has not quite been materialised In the first images of the project there were cows grazing on the deck and the slab of dwelling floated over the commercial streets It is, however, an example of how the uses of urban centres can be combined in many different ways photo: Luuk Kramer m², Urban planner Structural engineer Christian de Portzamparc Boele & van Eesteren Eurowoningen aplust 27

photo: Jan Bitter photo: Jan Bitter Bloembollenhof Arsenaal 2141 NE Vijfhuizen Vijfhuizen is a small town near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol S333 designed 56 houses adjacent to this village The density of the housing, the small plots and the intense mixture of different cost categories implied that traditional row housing proved insufficient to meet this challenge A simple series of houses have been designed and systematically located in an innovative way Through arranging the housing plots in a 'regular irregularity', the desired atmosphere has been created of cosy village-like density with a remarkable contemporary openness S333 has designed the scheme with the template of a rural farmyard in mind - or at least, the idea of clusters of barns, stables and outbuildings around a farmhouse The interior layout also varies from open-plan models with ceilings that are twice the typical height to more conventional, compartmentalised dwellings The façades have been wrapped by vertically grooved hard wood (Cumaru) siding and ribbed steel plating in equal proportion photo: Jan Bitter Project is not public! m² Main designer, Urban planner Landscape architect Services engineer Structural engineer Contractor S333 Dok en Hosper Adviesburo Nieman Constructie-adviesbureau Steens Thunnissen Bouw Gemeente Haarlemmermeer & Dura Bouw Franks Public transport: From Schiphol Airport, take bus 300 to Haarlem After 15 minutes, get out at Vijfhuizen and walk 5 minutes to Bloembollenhof By car: Take the A9 to Haarlem Before you reach Haarlem, take exit N205 (Hoofddorp-West) Then follow the blue signs to Vijfhuizen, following the N205 After 3,2 km, take a right turn at Stelling and after that, take the second exit at the roundabout (go straight ahead) After 100 m, the project will be on your left hand 28
