9 Joint Structural Division Special Awards 2006 China Projects Special Award Maunsell Structural Consultants Ltd. for the Grand Gateway, Shanghai basement. Construction of the project was carried out in two phases. Phase one commenced in 1993 and completed in 1999, this phase included the whole of the 6 levels retail podium, the basement and one of the residential towers. Phase two started in 2003 and completed in The structural form of the twin office towers is the central core with exterior column frame system providing a 13m column free office space. The exterior column frame is transferred at level 7 providing a smooth transformation between the tower office layout and the spacious shopping mall arrangement. The twin towers are lighted up at night by the 40m high steel roof lanterns at the roof top, providing as the Landmark feature of the development. To ensure compatibility of the structures built in phase one with the current seismic design codes, and also enhancing the safety standards of the structures, carbon fibre strengthening is used to enhance the strength and the ductility of the required structural members. The strengthening works include full wrap for columns, strip wraps and strip strengthening for beams and walls. The Hong Kong Engineers contribution to the application of advance technologies in Shanghai Structural Engineer : Maunsell Structural Consultants Ltd. Client : Shanghai Kong Hui Property Development Co. Ltd. Architects : Callison Architecture Inc., USA Frank C.Y. Feng Architect & Associates (HK) Ltd. LM2 Consortium, Singapore East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd. (ECADI) Contractor : Fujita Corporation Ltd. Shanghai Construction Co. Ltd. The Grand Gateway, locates at one of the busiest zones in Shanghai, Xu Hui District, is bounded by Hong Qiao Road and Hua Shan Road. The multifunctional development has a gross floor area of about 310,000m2 and comprises two 55-storey office towers, two 34- storey residential towers, and one 18-storey service apartment, all linked by a 6 levels of retails podium and a 3-storey The service apartment is a reinforced concrete frame structure over 70m above ground. The 10 levels of cascading L-shape apartment floors constructed on top of the 8 levels rectangular shape operating retail podium resulted in irregularity in both horizontal and vertical structural arrangement. In order to mitigate the adverse effect during seismic events, structural dampers are introduced to change and control the structural properties such that the critical seismic movements can be controlled. The Phase two construction was carried out on top of operating retails podium. Settlement joint using the rocking slab approach were design to mitigate the effect of the differential settlement. Careful planning of the whole construction procedure including material handling, formwork erection, concreting, together with safety precautionary measures were implemented and resulted with no adverse effect to normal operation of the retails podium during towers construction period. 9

10 Joint Structural Division Special Awards 2006 Hong Kong Projects Special Award Ove Arup & partners Hong Kong Limited for the Three Pacific Place, Hong Kong allowed for on the post-tensioning slab to suit the tenancy possible requirements. Ten numbers of composite columns located around the perimeter at 9m to 13.5m c/c and the core wall provide the gravity load support system. Due to the requirement of maintaining the distance of the exterior column face to the façade constant, the composite columns have been eccentrically transferred seven times from 1800mm diameter on G/F to 800mmx800mm on Level 37. Steel trusses cantilevered from the core wall are used to support the plant room level on the roof to create double storey height on Level 38. The tower is rested on a 3 to 3.5m thick reinforced concrete raft on Grade III Rock. Structural, Tunnel, Geotechnical and Civil Engineer: Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Ltd Client & Project Manager: Swire Properties Ltd Architects & M&E Engineer: Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd. Quantity Surveyor: Davis Langdon & Seah Hong Kong Ltd Main Contractor: Gammon Construction Ltd Three Pacific Place is recognized as a successful urban redevelopment project in Wanchai District, which comprises of a 38-Storey Grade A+ office tower on top of two levels of podium and three levels of basement in Phase 1 with structural provision for a future extension, a pedestrian subway connecting to MTRC Admiralty Station and a provision of pedestrian footbridge. A highly eccentric reinforced concrete core wall abutting the eastern façade provides the overall lateral stability of the tower. State of the art structural optimisation has been carried out to reduce the concrete volume by 3,502m 3 and increase the total usable floor area by 606m mm thick post-tensioning flat slab with the maximum span of 16m (simply supported) and 4.5m (cantilevered) is adopted as the office floor system. The storey height and clear height of the office floor are 3950mm and 2750mm respectively. Structural provision for possible inter-storey staircase openings on the office floor has been Due to the phased possession of the site in five parcels and the future extension requirement, the overall building structures are to be designed for three different cases namely the phase 1, the future extension and the construction stage. The completion of the foundation and core wall construction under Wing Fung Street West prior to the superstructure construction was rendered due to the sequential site acquisition. Back calculation method to determine the maximum height of the curtain wall could be erected without extra strengthening works to the permanent structures as well as retrofit construction technique for foundation and core wall of the concerned portion were adopted. The first three-dimensional tensioned cable net glass wall system in Hong Kong has been installed on the podium to create a very transparent view. The height of the cable nets are 21m and 10m at Queen s Road East and Star Street. The development comprises of eight major interrelated tender packages namely Demolition, Excavation and Lateral Support, Advance Foundation, Advance Steelwork, Main Contact, External works and Pedestrian Subway. Very detail collaboration of the tendering strategy as well as structural design warranted the tower completion on time and within budget. 10

11 Joint Structural Division Special Awards 2006 Hong Kong Projects Commendation Award Maunsell Structural Consultants Ltd. for the Choi Hung Park & Ride Development No. 8 Clear Water Bay Road, Kowloon Innovative Engineering Technique Portray the Rainbow of Existing Community Structural Engineer : Maunsell Structural Consultants Ltd. Developer : Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) Chun Wo Construction & Engineering Co. Ltd. Architects : Ronald Lu & Partners (HK) Ltd. Contractor : Chun Wo Contractors Ltd. The MTR Choi Hung Park and the Ride Development is a multi-functional residential/transport interchange building situated above the existing MTR Choi Hung tunnel and was completed in December The development, site fronts Clear Water Bay Road, will be a prominent transport node with different modes of public transportation. It consists of a 57-storey residential tower, a 9-storey PTI and carpark podium, a vehicular access ramp for PTI, a 2-level basement, a footbridge linked to existing community, and an underground pedestrian subway connecting the basement and the underground MTR station. Substantial part of the podium is situated immediately above the on-grade MTRC tunnel completed in RC trusses spanning between the existing tunnels walls were reserved for supporting the podium structures with limited loading allowance. Intelligent engineering design, on grade ground slab in associate with the innovative shear transducer, enhances the loading capacity that a building much higher than the original design can be achieved. Intensive appraisals to the existing structures were carried out before and during construction where the appraisal results were analyzed in detail and integrated into the structural design. The approach of Observational Method was adopted to eliminate the uncertainty on prediction of the structural behaviours during construction above the existing trusses on MTR tunnel. Several design options with different scenario of podium construction progress in different portions were provided and arrangements were made for design decisions during construction. The development is within the protection areas for railway, water main and drainage culvert at where the construction is constrained. Clear Water Bay Road is a busy traffic main linking between the city centre and the outskirt. Horizontal pipe piles and grouted pillar supports were introduced for subway construction that resolved the excavation problem at busy road. And special ramp design together with the well planned phase traffic diversions streamlined the construction of the car access ramp to the development PTI. For a structure adjacent to a busy highway as well sitting next to and on top of an operating MTR tunnel, innovative and comprehensive engineering designs are the major solutions to complete the most challenging construction. Integration of multidiscipline engineering professions lead the project towards a successful outcome. 11
