7 photo: Gareth Gardner photo: Gareth Gardner Red Bull Headquarters Sutton Row 12 W1D 4AD London The undeniable associations of hyperactivity and adrenaline-overload with Red Bull energy drinks are exactly what inspired the design of their brand new headquarters located in London's Soho district Bright colors and dynamic shapes fill the renovated top 3-storeys of an existing 19th century office, posing to encourage cheerful interaction between employees while simultaneously expressing Red Bull's strong brand values From ping pong table meeting rooms, floating staircases, a modern bar and cafe, to a comfy lounge area and a new slick carbon slide in the centre of the office The top floor acts as a social hub, containing the main reception, bar, cafe, both informal and formal meeting areas, and the main boardroom Visitors ascend from street level by elevator and enter via a rooftop reception lobby overlooking London's West End This dramatic entry sequence is heightened by views down into and through the building Public access unknown! 10 photo: Michael Mack photo: Alex de Rijke Kingsdale School Alleyn Park 16 SE21 8SQ London In the next decade 'Building Schools for the Future', a British governmental programme, aims to see every secondary school in the country refurbished or replaced In practice this means the biggest demolition wave of educational buildings ever seen in the UK But this is by no means inevitable There is always the option to refurbish and Kingsdale School in South London is living proof that it can work After the successful completion of Phase 1, which involved reconfiguration of the central courtyard, the school needed a new music and sports block The new sports block, a building type which usually ends up as a big box owing to the dictates of Sport England, has been turned into a Venturian Decorated Shed with a stunningly twisted roof The music building has a perforated envelope with kidney-shaped openings that are covered by glass bubbles which turn out to be standard domed roof lights, unexpectedly applied to a vertical rather than a horizontal surface photo: Alex de Rijke 2006 drmm Kingsdale Foundation School Cordula_Zeidler 10

11 photo: Philip Vile photo: Philip Vile Young Vic Theatre The Cut 66 SE1 8LZ London The Young Vic theatre, built on a WWII bomb site in 1970, was intended as temporary accommodation for five years Due to lack of funds, the adjoining Victorian-era butcher's shop, which had survived the blast, was fitted out by architect Bill Howell as a foyer space Over the years, it was precisely this rather makeshift character that became the defining feature of the Young Vic Accordingly, Haworth Tompkins strove to retain that informal atmosphere in their design for a refurbished, better appointed Young Vic The new theatre still gives the impression of an ad hoc collection of discrete elements; the shop was not demolished, for example, just renovated The new materials contribute to the desired impression The theatre's new 'signboard' is the cladding of the auditorium: hand-painted cement-board panels faced by steel mesh This mesh, which appears coppery by day and is illuminated by night, gives the Young Vic an industrial theatricality 2006 Technical engineer Supplier Haworth Tompkins James & Taylor The Expanded Metal Company The Young Vic Theatre Kirsten_Hannema photo: Philip Vile Depending on the agenda, check the website You'll find the Young Vic in the middle of The Cut in Waterloo, a short walk from mainline and underground stations and major bus routes And just down the road from the Old VicTube: Waterloo Station is on the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern, Waterloo & City lines Southwark Station is on the Jubilee line Rail: Waterloo & Waterloo East Charing Cross and London Bridge stations are one stop away 11

15 photo: Edmund Sumner photo: Edmund Sumner Paradise Park Children's Centre Mackenzie Road 164 N7 8SE London Paradise Park was no Garden of Eden when this project began The park was overgrown and more of a dump for burnt-out motorbikes than a communal green space The brief to put a building in the park was hence a tricky planning issue and a challenge the architects confronted head on If there had to be a structure encroaching on existing open space, why not turn the building itself into a bit of park? 16 photo: Nick Guttridge photo: Nick Guttridge Southcombe Offices Vernon Street 31 W14 London Terry Pawson has wasted not a single square millimetre of ground and has built a stunning new office building which is tightly embraced by a lovingly restored courthouse-turned-office The court building, with its cellular plan, was easily converted offices remained offices and the large courtroom will make a good meeting room, top lit by a roof lantern The new building next door does not make any obvious stylistic reference to its older neighbour The concrete frame is clad in a very light-coloured reconstituted stone which is cut in long, thin slabs that span the long distance across the main entrance The rear façades are fully glazed and look out onto an internal courtyard, complete with olive tree and lush planting There are two main office floors and a small rooftop cube housing another two meeting rooms Because all electrics and heating were banished under the floor, together with the project's relatively small scale, these offices feel very homely Project is not public! 2006 Terry Pawson s Vernon Street Property Cordula_Zeidler photo: Nick Guttridge 16

18 photo: Morley von Sternberg photo: Morley von Sternberg Donnybrook Housing Junction of Parnell Road and Old Ford Road E3 London Peter Barber has with immense precision hit a very sensitive spot - he is by many seen as an architectural saviour, showing the way out of a major housing crisis in London Donnybrook comes at a time when the government is desperate to build quick and cheap It shows with easy elegance that there is a solution; the project is incredibly dense yet it has a charmingly intimate character and is irresistably optimistic Barber has given everybody a private outdoors, framed by his modernist inspired solid volumes Those living on the ground floor have a courtyard behind the house, while the maisonettes above are given a large terrace There are some one-off solutions for buildings at the edges of the development, with a wedge-shaped one-bedroom house on a very slim plan, some higher volumes on the main road and houses with generously glazed façades overlooking the square Donnybrook achieves a lot, creating an environment where community seems possible and where living can be fun photo: Morley von Sternberg Project is not public! 2006 Peter Barber s Circle Anglia Housing Trust + Old Ford Housing Association Cordula_Zeidler Donnybrook has no gates and no surveillance cameras, so the public square can be visited 18

19 photo: Peter Cook photo: Peter Cook Central School of Speech and Drama Eton Ave NW3 3HY London At the heart of the Central School of Speech and Drama's site is the school's own theatre, surrounded by various additions built in the last decade It all looked rather ad hoc and piecemeal, a brick block here, a concrete workshop building there Something radical had to happen, in terms of both volume and design The school needed space, and a lot of it It also had no architectural identity and this too had to change The site is truly inhospitable, even by urban London standards: it has an irregular footprint and faces a busy traffic junction lined with large, mediocre building blocks To resist intense noise and urban hardness, the building needed to be bold and confident And so it is A tightly spaced and subtly coloured glass façade to the west is held together by solid volumes of dark engineering brick and shiny zinc This excitement drops upon entering the building, where there is no architectural drama, no detail to speak of and, apart from a little timid orange, no colour photo: Peter Cook 2005 Jestico + Whiles Central School of Speech and Drama Cordula_Zeidler Bus The following bus routes have stop near Central: 13, 187, 268, C11, 31, 46, 82, 113 Underground Central is on the other side of the road from the Jubilee Line - Swiss Cottage (exit 2), or approximately 8 minutes walk from the Metropolitan Line Finchley Road tube station Rail Central is approximately 10 minutes walk from the Silverlink Metro Finchley Road & Frognal rail station Bicycle The nearest bicycle racks are next to Swiss Cottage tube station (exit 2) 19
