3 photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects NRGi Headquarters Dusager Aarhus NRGi's corporate headquarters is situated in an area marked by a number of freestanding buildings NRGi stands out from its neighbours in the surrounding area in virtue of its visually light, metallically gleaming built volume Distinguished by an angular and distinctive façade, the building forms a crisp contrast to the mellow, scenic context Moreover, the building is situated and oriented so as to accommodate the path of the sun, and set at an angle so that it provides sun shading Hence, energy efficiency is built into the structure's design The interior echoes the dynamic tone of the façade Three open horizontal plates are mutually displaced diagonally With long lines of sight across the building and vertically up through the floors, the architecture creates visual transparency and facilitates contact between employees Small meeting pods and coffee points act as breakout areas and as spaces for informal exchanges photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects Project is not public! m² schmidt hammer lassen architects NRGi schmidt_hammer_lassen_architects 3

4 photo: Kontraframe photo: Kontraframe Arkitema Headquarters Frederiksgade Aarhus The headquarters of Arkitema architects is a manifestation of the company's philosophy The building was designed to be a creative and inspiring space for work A spacious foyer invites visitors to the building Above the foyer extends an atrium which connects all work spaces, opening up the building and making it transparent A penthouse on top of the building contains a canteen, which opens to a huge roof terrace giving opportunity to rest during work The office is a great example of good Danish architectural traditions with care for details and finishing All together, the clear idea from concept to details makes this building a great example of modern architecture photo: Klaus Bang Project is not public! 2002, Interior architect Arkitema KZaremba 4

5 photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects ARoS Museum of Modern Art Aros Allé 2 DK-8000 Aarhus This striking art museum is the cultural centrepiece of Aarhus, 's second largest city The museum is designed specifically to welcome visitors, straddling a public thoroughfare that transforms the building into a bridge linking two of the city's cultural centres This public route through the museum provides a vital connection with the network of streets beyond, encouraging dynamic interplay between the museum and everyday life The building, set into the sloping site, has a footprint of 52 x 52 metres and stands almost 50 metres high In contrast to the apparent severity of the exterior, the dazzling white interior, flooded with daylight, presents a sequence of highly organic sweeping curves that define the different levels of the building The interior curing walkway divides the museum into two distinct wings: the exhibition wing with its gallery spaces and the service wing housing a restaurant, administration offices, conservation area, workshops, storerooms and a library photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects Project is public! m², Interior architect Acoustics consultant schmidt hammer lassen architects KZaremba Jordan Akustik Aarhus Municipality Tuesday-Sunday 10-17; Wednesday 10-22; Monday closed The lobby is free to visit Entrance fee museum - 90 DKK (adults)/ 75 DKK (students), free entrance: ARoS is located in centre of Ahrus 5min from train station (walk) and near the city hall 5

6 photo: Poul Nyholm photo: Poul Nyholm Gymnastics & Motor Skills Hall Hvidkildevej Aarhus The Motor Skills Hall is an extension of the Aarhus Gymnastics and Trampoline Hall The idea of the augment has been to design a hall which motivates the 3-10-year-old to practise movement A sculpturally-formed climbing frame, called the seashell, extends across the hall, stretching right up under the ceiling, where there is a look-out tower at a height of eight metres providing a view of Aarhus Bay and Mols Mountains The hall also invites movement through its many footbridges and platforms located along the length of the hall, and flexibly furnished zones called kangaroo land with trampolines and jumping equipment, and a so-called monkey land with ropes and jungle-like density The unusual spaces which arise through the extension have also been put to active use; the slanting roof surface of the existing hall has for example been transformed into an indoor climbing wall From the outside, the hall has the appearance of a raw concrete shell photo: Julian Weyer Project is public! m² Services engineer C F Møller s Moe & Brødsgaard VIK Gymnastik C_F_Moller_s 6

7 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Concert Hall Extension Thomas Jensens Alle Aarhus The Concert Hall, Aarhus was originally designed by Kjær & Richter, and was inaugurated in 1982 With its new extension the Concert Hall has doubled in size, and now encompasses a wide range of functions that turn the total complex into a unique concert and educational institution of international standard The extension includes a Symphonic Hall with sublime acoustics and room for an audience of 1,200, a Rhythmic Music Hall, a Chamber Music Hall, and premises for the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, the Filuren children's theatre ensemble and the Danish National Opera The Symphonic Hall is specially built for symphonic music, and functions in itself like a giant instrument, the sound of which can be adjusted by moving walls, carpeting and acoustic panels The Hall's internal dimensions are carefully designed to produce the best acoustics; the model for its proportions is the Golden Hall in the Musikverein, Vienna, which is optimum for orchestral music photo: Adam Mørk Project is public! m², Interior architect Contractor Acoustics consultant Acoustics consultant Artist Structural engineer C F Møller s C_F_Moller_s A Enggaard a/s Artec Consultants Inc COWI Ingwar Cronhammar Søren Jensen Municipality of Aarhus (ticket office) 7

8 photo: Cebra photo: Cebra Isbjerget Mariane Thomsens Gade Aarhus At this prime location, with its spectacular view across the bay, the seemingly simple task was to maximize views and sunlight for every apartment Instead of following the master plan made up of primarily closed blocks, Isbjerget is laid out as four L-shaped wings in which the street spaces between the parallel wings open towards the water To expose the view to as many apartments as possible, a jagged roof profile has been introduced The L-shapes are arranged like carefully organized mountain peaks and valleys allowing even apartments in the back row to enjoy fantastic views of the rising peaks and the water The simple algorithm used in the design has resulted in a stunning iceberg structure The architecture offices CEBRA, JDS architects, Louis Paillard, search worked together in close collaboration on this project photo: Cebra Project is not public! m² Main designer, CEBRA architecture JDS architects Louis Paillard search PensionDanmark CEBRA_architecture At the moment by feet or by car 8

10 photo: Julian Weyer photo: Erik W Olsson The University of Aarhus Nordre Ringgade Aarhus The University of Aarhus is a unique and coherent university campus with consistent architecture, homogeneous use of yellow brickwork and adaptation to the landscape The university has won renown and praise as an integrated complex which unites the best aspects of functionalism with solid Danish traditions in form and materials All throughout the campus, the buildings are variations of the same clear-cut prismatic volume with pitched roofs, oriented orthogonally to form individual architectural clusters sharing the same vocabulary The way the buildings emerge from the landscape makes them seem to grow from it, rather than being superimposed on the site The 1931 competition was won by architects Kay Fisker, C F Møller & Povl Stegmann, the park is by C Th Sørensen C F Møller s has been in charge of the continued architectural development of the university, which today is internationally renowned and officially recognized as a Danish national architectural treasure Project is public! m² Main designer, Landscape architect C F Møller s CTh Sørensen Danish Ministry of Education C_F_Moller_s photo: Torben Eskerod 10
