11 photo: Ferit Kuyas photo: Camenzind Evolution Collective Housing at Zurich Seefeldstrasse Zurich This project, also called Seewurfel, proposes a possible alternative to individual luxury homes, which traditionally take up large amounts of space with a very low population density In this case, the low population density, with a maximum of two housing units per building, is complemented by a programme of offices on the lower floors, which generates activity in the area during the day, in spite of they do not affect to the density parameter The private garden that characterises the nearby villas becomes a series of public plazas which help to create interaction between those who use them The other main aspect of luxury homes, individuality, is achieved by creating differences in the built volumes as well as in common areas using varied materials and finishes photo: Reinhard Zimmermann Project is not public! 14 photo: Stefan Müller Eisgasse House Eisgasse 8004 Zurich Max Dudler's Eisgasse House, situated on the south-west corner of the ensemble, has been conceived as a stone building A cladding of massive cast stone sections conceals the window frames, thereby making only two materials visible in the façade: dark green cast stone and glass Through the addition of local alpine stone of variegated grain (white marble, black basalt, alpe verde), the dressed stone façade shows a diversity of detail and depth depending on the viewing distance This gives the impression that the regularly-spaced façade openings have been cut sharply from a monolithic mass, thereby lending the building an imposing gravitas photo: Stefan Müller Project is not public! 15 Toni Areal Förrlibuckstrasse Zurich On the Toni Site a former milk-processing factory is to be transformed into a platform for education, culture and living Within the urban development of the district and within the transition of 's university landscape the Toni Site represents a central building block The architect assumed that this is primarily an urban planning and a programmatic problem The design proposes tackling this sizable project - a built structure almost the size of an entire neighbourhood - with a kind of inner urbanism On the outside the existing system of ramps is read as a vertical boulevard and reinterpreted as the main circulation Inside, inner addresses are created that locate individual functions like buildings in the city To create an open framework EM2N worked with different degrees of precision, scales and tonalities and with a range extending from huge public spaces to intimate private ones The building as city, the city as building photo: Keystone Project is not public! 17 Main Tower Thurgauerstrasse Zurich The newly emerging city-style Quadro district consists of a freestanding ensemble of multistorey buildings whose varied and impressive heights will make their mark in northern Zurich Within the overall development, the MainTower is situated in the most prominent position at the Thurgauerstrasse / Hagenholzstrasse crossroads The multistorey building thus forms the striking start to the new development The twin-tower multistorey «CS Towers» building has already been completed during a first phase in 2004 In a second building phase, the same architectural impression is now being continued in the three new buildings currently under construction The four buildings, designed by the Architekturgemeinschaft Atelier ww / Max Dudler, are grouped around the publicly accessible Quadroplatz with its various utilisation options for public use Floor area/size m² Max Dudler 17

18 photo: Maarten Thewissen photo: Eke Miedaner Branco Weiss Information Science Laboratory Wolfgang-Pauli-Strasse Zurich Within ETH Zurich this new building is simply called the 'HIT', but its full name is the 'Branco Weiss Information Science Laboratory', named after ETH Zurich alumnus Branco Weiss who supported the building financially The building, with its panoramic view of the entire city, will certainly be filled with a lot of electronics by the users, and yet it is not a high-tech building, as a symbol of the information highway The façade is a contributor to the building's climatic properties; sensors respond to the weather and the height of the sun The depths of the balconies differ depending on their compass direction, so they also act as sunshades Openings of various sizes from the small spatial units, the entrance area and the two-story seminar rooms situated along the outer walls lend the façade its own rhythm //text from architects' website photo: Roderick Trompert Floor area/size m² Client baumschlager & eberle ETH Zürich Roderick mo to fr 8-22h From Zürich HB: tram 11 (direction Auzelg) to Bucheggplatz, change to bus 69 to terminal stop ETH Hönggerberg tram 14 (direction Seebach) to Milchbuck, change to bus 69 to terminal stop ETH Hönggerberg From Bahnhof Oerlikon Nord bus 80 (direction Triemlispital) to stop ETH Hönggerberg 18

24 photo: David Baugh photo: David Baugh Aussersihl Community Centre Hohlstrasse Zurich This project was won in competition in 1999 The site is a historic memorial park, on the western side of the city centre - a sensitive location The architects decided to break with convention for a community centre, and build vertically, rather than horizontally The initial proposal was for a six-storey, angular tower nestling by some trees on the eastern side of the site After completing the design, the budget was slashed, and the design team were sent back to the drawing board The revised scheme is still in the form of a tower, but only four storeys, including a basement and kidney-shaped in plan The structure is formed of lime brick walls and concrete floor slabs It is clad in timber boards, stained dark green, to help the building blend in with its surroundings By contrast, the interiors are painted in many different and bright colours The ground floor contains a café, which is popular with the locals out enjoying the park 2000 Services engineer Structural engineer Client EM2N Amstein+Walthert Tragwerk Bauingenieure GmbH City of Zurich Department of Social Welfare davidb photo: David Baugh The project is located in Backeranlage Park The number 8 tram stops here 24

28 photo: Georg Gisel photo: Georg Gisel Im Birch School Margrit-Rainer-Strasse Zurich Peter Märkli demonstrates that 'big' does not necessarily mean 'anonymous' but can also stand for 'dense' With a length of 250 metres, this school in Zurich is quite a hunk Even so, it fits into the scale of the former industrial district and can be taken in at a glance Two four-storey volumes, slightly staggered, face each other The third volume contains the gym, one of the biggest in town Despite the stateliness and severity, there is never a feeling of monumentality This comes from the scale of the building's volumes, for Märkli is a master of proportion; the vertical texture of the concrete articulates all of the façades, and the uppermost strip, forming the edge of the roof, recedes slightly This prevents the corners of the building from appearing apart from the top Märkli applies this knowledge completely naturally, even though it is no longer familiar today The slight shifts that distinguish his work therefore keep being seen as a lack of precision photo: Georg Gisel Public access unknown! 2004 Project manager Associate architect Artist Project manager Landscape designer Client Peter Märkli Christof Ansorge Gody Kühnis Hans Josephsohn Jakob Frischknecht Zulauf Seippel Schweingruber City of Zurich Axel_Simon 28
