Places of coffee consumption of very different kinds are now indispensable as part of urban life all over the world. Such premises are constantly being redefined, reconceived and restaged especially now through the Third Wave of Coffee. This publication shows how cafés, coffee houses and coffee shops are designed today: whether as a grand café, a living room mockup or a nonchalant co-working space, whether in retro style or more casual. In addition to the 60 examples from all over the world, articles and essays tell the reader about very different aspects of coffee (house) culture in the past and present. sample pages Dnipropetrovs ka, Ukraine MISHI BLYACHERA CAFE CRAFT COFFEE The art of correct filtering Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. This reimagining allowed for a vast variety of layouts within; from smart one-bedroom flats to neo-lofts up to three level lofts can be found within the building with a total of 95 apartments. The round silo structures became utilized as varyingly sized balcony zones. The balcony openings are enhanced with metal trelliswork that maintains the round shape of the silos while providing sufficient privacy. The trelliswork blocks part of the direct sunlight yet is still sparse enough to let light pass and allow views through to the landscape. Together with varying zones of glazed and open, low and full-height, the balconies are vastly multifunctional, true extensions of the apartments. A mainly rectangular dark extension expands the silo structure naturally within the reimagined plot. In keeping with the original industrial atmosphere of the area, the raw, in-situ cast concrete surfaces are a vivid element throughout the interior of the building. The corridors industrial design combined with contemporary solutions and materials creates a unique, hotel-like feel. The possibility of purchasing an apartment in a semi-finished state proved also popular. new title Chris van Uffelen Graphic design: Michaela Prinz Adaptive Re-Use for Homes The Best is Yet to Come... English Hardcover 24 x 28 cm 9 ½ x 11 in. 272 pages 400 illustrations ISBN September 2018 ISBN From the contents: n From school to apartment complex in London, UK (Conran and Partners) n From pumping station to vacation residence, Latvia (Zaigas Gailes Birojs) n From church to single-family home in Chicago, USA (Linc Thelen Design and Scrafano Architects) n From office complex to apartment building in Frankfurt, Germany (Stefan Forster Architects) n From theater to flats in Sydney, Australia (Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects) Housing shortages and building dereliction are fundamental challenges, concerning also the current architectural landscape. That these problems can be overcome by addressing them together has been proven by the increasingly successful reactivation and conversion of existing real estate in both urban and rural contexts. Real-world examples show that these measures can also make sense economically and from an urban planning perspective. In this way, the most extraordinary living spaces are created from old silos or depreciated office buildings, vacant churches, former station buildings or obsolete infrastructure buildings with the creative appropriation of the existing substance. The careful and respectful handling of the building fabric is as important in this process as the creative extension of the existing structures. This volume shows the exciting variety of reuse possibilities and provides new insights into and perspectives on a highly topical subject. sample pages TERVAHOVI SILOS THE MID-CENTURY CYLINDRICAL GRAIN SILOS IN THE TOPPILANSALMI-AREA OF OULU, FINLAND 17 TODAY, THERE ARE 60 APARTMENTS OPENING THE SILOS FAÇADE, BUT KEEPING HIS VOLUMINA

Students learn best where learning is interesting and fun so the standards required for school construction are equally high. The continual development of educational concepts and new didactic approaches are changing everyday life in schools and, with it, the functional and aesthetic qualities of this building task. Classrooms and public areas both inside and outside are becoming increasingly flexible and multifunctional. They offer opportunities to retreat for individualized learning opportunities and zones of concentrated work, as well as open space landscapes for inter-year mingling and self-organized group activities. The school projects presented in this volume show how contemporary pedagogical concepts are translated into compelling and very diverse architectural solutions. sample pages Projekt EXPANSION PRIMARY SCHOOL Steinmürli Architects Enzmann + Fischer AG Address Römerstrasse 13, 8953 Dietikon, Switzerland Client City of Dietikon Completion 2006 Size 3,200 m² Grades 1 3 a b c External view g d d e f 11

7 Address: Minneapolis, USA Landscape design: SWA Group Completion: Size: 10,000 m2 Client: Gensler This clearly articulated storm system attempts to interact with the contemporary design languages, as well as challenging its visitors with its dynamic expression. The design makes use of the natural retention properties of the plants but molds the area to form an attractive landscaped area that also excellently serves the needs of those using it. The site is located along Renmin South Boulevard in the heart of the new hi-tech district of Chengdu. With four buildings of various heights planned on the site, a series of intimate courtyard spaces have been created to counterbalance the encroaching urbanity. Along with the architecture, the landscape design creates a brocade, weaving together the buildings and site programs, and creating an oasis amidst the dense, urban location. The designer takes into account the city of Chengdu by paying attention to key infrastructural elements. To mitigate storm water runoff from the site, the design incorporates an extensive water filtration garden, which provides a natural solution to this common infrastructural problem. Each grass panel is tilted towards the gravel drain along the bottom of the panel, and all surface runoff is filtered through the vegetated panels and trickles through the gravel drain that connects to the basins. The basins are filled with either crushed stone or pebbles, which allows them to act as a retention pond during storms. A zigzagged wooden walkway cuts through the entry reflecting pool and leads into the rain garden. Across layers of rich landscape, the ever-changing walkway hovers above all adjacent landscape panels. A few boulders scattered in the gravel basin serve as informal seating elements. new title Chris van Uffelen Graphic design: Luca Bendandi Company Gardens Green Spaces for Retreat and Inspiration English Hardcover 24 x 28 cm 9 ½ x 11 in. 192 pages 350 illustrations ISBN October 2018 ISBN From the contents: n Bestseller Office Complex in Aarhus, Denmark (C.F. On the one hand, company gardens fulfill the function of a signboard advertising the company. On the other hand, in times of flexible working hours, worklife balance and global networking, they are increasingly emerging as projection screens for innovative workplace concepts. The implementations are remarkably diverse, their conception often depending on whether the company garden is directed to the outside world or rather designed for the employees. It can serve the public as a city park, act almost as a calling card as part of the corporate identity, be designed as a quiet oasis for breaks from work or as a place for informal meetings and collegial communication. Through selected examples of company gardens from around the world, this volume reveals the great diversity present within this field of architecture. sample pages Company Gardens Company Gardens Walkway leads through a peaceful landscape Surly Brewery Walkway cutting through A communal space for the courtyards strolling and socializing Boulders as seating elements Campus is surrounded by buildings A dynamic fusion of visual elements This pleasant open space is ideal for inspiration Extensive water filtration garden mitigates storm water runoff A cosy communal feeling defines this area A natural oasis in an urban location

11 Design Basics Design Basics typography design architecture typography design architecture Revised and expanded edition Design Basics offers a professional yet compact introduction to industrial design, written by specialists in the field with years of experience as product designers and design educators at various universities. The book is aimed at enquiring users as well as committed entrepreneurs, interested technicians and aspiring designers from a great variety of fields. The central theme is product design, taking the conflicting interests of consumers, manufacturers and designers into consideration. All factors of planning and design of industrial products are considered and presented clearly. The authors cover the entire field from the historical roots to the outlook in the near future, from a comprehensive look at product functions to analysis of the complex design process, from theoretical foundations to descriptive case studies. _ Extended and revised edition _ Concise introduction to industrial design _ History of design as well as outlook to the future _ Description of processes and product functions Gerhard Heufler, Michael Lanz, Martin Prettenthaler Graphic design: Martin Prettenthaler Design Basics From Ideas to Products English, 244 pages, 400 illustrations 17.2 x 20.9 cm 6 ¾ x 8 ¼ in., softcover with flaps ISBN October 2018 Gerhard Heufler ( ) was an Austrian industrial designer and co-founder of the degree program Industrial Design at the FH JOANNEUM in Graz. He received numerous national prizes for design, e.g. for the world s smallest mine detector or an unmanned helicopter that are now both part of the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2005 he was awarded the USA Industrial Design Excellence Award Gold for a compost turning machine. Michael Lanz, born in 1965, studied product design at the University of Wuppertal. He is one of the three directors of the strategic design consulting agency designaffairs GmbH with offices in Munich and Shanghai. Since 2014 he has been head of the Institute for Product and Transportation Design at the FH JOANNEUM in Graz. Not only is he member of the juries of various international renowned design awards, but his own work is also part of the New Collection of the Munich Pinakothek of the Modern. Martin Prettenthaler, born in 1969, studied architecture and industrial engineering at the Technical University of Graz. Beside his work as freelance designer and architect he teaches design history and management at the degree program Industrial Design of the FH JOANNEUM, and organizes exhibitions and symposiums on the topic design. He was awarded with numerous prizes, e.g. for the Graz Museum. niggli niggli

12 » Identity programme «In 1974, Atelier Bachmann presented a Corporate Design Manual which preserved the previous logo as a wordmark but changed it. The letters of the constructed wordmark, which merge like ligatures, were not typeset as a fine hairline but bolder. The wordmark from that point onward formed the foundation for the design. It was a grid, logo and surface all at once. The» H «and» N «of» THONET «formed two axes to which typographical elements were added. This concept should only be the beginning on the path to a reduced black and white appearance. 18 NEW TITLE Glorious Days Are Ahead The Harzburger Hof was not only one of the five largest and most prestigious hotels in Germany it was always also a social microcosm and mirror of its time. Opened in 1874 as the ducal Actien-Hotel, it went through a series of peaks and troughs of fortune in the 20th century. A sophisticated place for recuperation in the days of empire, the Harzburger Hof became a center of cultural life in the 1920s, later serving as a military hospital and then as an office for the occupation forces after the war, before its social life was revived in the 1960s and 1970s. After structural and economic decline in the 1980s and 1990s, the hotel was closed. Following a series of fires, demolition was the only option.
