2 Nominees for 2006 AIA Honolulu Officers and Board of Directors Candidates for 2006 Executive Committee (Listed by position) Position: Vice President/President-Elect, 2006 Peter Vincent, AIA Biography: Peter Vincent came early to the field of architecture. He knew at the age of 12 that architecture would be his future and has devoted his life to the profession ever since. After attending the Phoenix Institute of Technology and the Boston Architectural Center, Peter's early professional career is characterized by projects around the world, including the renovation of an 11th century castle in Tuscany, the corporate headquarters for Ocean Spray Cranberries in Massachusetts, and a mixed-use high rise complex in Saudi Arabia. Peter began his independent practice in Honolulu in January During this time he was contacted by the Kauai County Office of Emergency Permitting to serve as the building official in the aftermath of Hurricane Iniki. As Peter Vincent & Associates grows, the vision of a design-oriented, boutique architecture and interior design firm continues to be the focus of the organization under Peter's leadership and direction. Peter's design sense and business acumen are key in building one of Hawaii's leading design firms. Peter is married and has four children, ages 3 to 22. He enjoys playing tennis, cooking and travel. Philosophy: ca ma ra der ie (n) A feeling of close friendship and trust among a particular group of people The expansion of our membership camaraderie is an essential ingredient in the future success of AIA Honolulu. I feel both capable of and challenged by achieving this goal - one that will result in the growth of all vital aspects of the organization. It will become stronger, more productive, and unified in its vision and mission. As the chapter Vice President/President- Elect, I am prepared to undertake this challenge to carry the organization into the future. Position: Treasurer, Jeffrey Y. Nishi AIA Biography: Jeffrey Y. Nishi AIA was born and raised in Honolulu. Jeff Nishi was educated at the University of Arizona at Tucson, Arizona where he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree. He is the founder and Principle Architect of his firm Jeffrey Nishi & Associates / Architects founded in Prior to starting is own firm Jeff worked for notable design firms of George Johnson, Val Ossipoff and Norman Lacayo. Jeff has served as a director for both the AIA Honolulu Chapter and the AIA Hawai i State Council. He has been active in the past with the Hawai i Architect publication. He has received multiple design awards from AIA Honolulu for residential structures ranging from a 450 square foot studio in Lanikai to a 6000 square foot Waialae residence.

3 (Jeffrey Y. Nishi) Philosophy: I see the AIA window into the profession of architecture and the organization from which the members of this profession can gain strength and advantage when acting as a group. I believe the AIA should showcase the practice of architecture to the public to educate the public on the need for architects and the services the architect provides. I further believe that the members should receive benefits of membership including group policies on purchases, insurance, professional education and other advantages created by a large group. Candidates for 2006 AIA Honolulu Board of Directors Four At-Large, Listed in Alphabetical Order by Last Name John Black, AIA Biography: John Black, AIA began studying architecture as a young child, inspired by the New York City skyline outside his bedroom window. After spending two years in the fledgling yet progressive New Jersey Institute of Technology architecture program, John sought a radically different environment. Moving to the Sonoran Desert he graduated from the University of Arizona before journeying back east to Cambridge, Massachusetts. While his professional career began there with work Buckminster Fuller s geodesic domes, a passion for individual creativity eventually led to the founding of Lapis Architecture, now in business for 17 years the past 4 years in Hawai i. Philosophy: As a Boston Society of Architects member, I was involved in establishing a small firms committee. Our group wanted a voice in an organization where larger firms, with resources to be more active members, would set the agenda. For those of us working long hours with little staff support, the cost of membership needs to have practical value. Here in Hawai i I want a Chapter that will define that value. And since my interest is residential design, I also want a Chapter that educates homeowners about the value of design, while encouraging its members to promote values that truly reflect these unique and beautiful Islands. Geoffrey S. Lewis, AIA Biography: Geoffrey Lewis, AIA is an artist whom finds his artistic expression in architecture. After returning back to Hawai i in 1989, Geoffrey began his working career with John Hara & associates. In 1992 he joined Design Partners where he became an Associate in In 1997, he ventured out to start his own practice which has been growing ever since. He has been recognized with numerous awards in residential & commercial architecture. Geoffrey s Bachelors degree of Architecture comes from Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Geoffrey also enjoys designing & building furniture. Twice his furniture has been selected for the Artist of Hawai i at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. His community involvement includes being a Rotarian since 1993, Chair person of the Kahala Kua Design Review Committee, a current Director for the AIA and teaching a design studio at the University of Hawai i.

4 (Geoffrey S. Lewis) Philosophy: Where has great design gone in Hawai i? As the current knowledge committee chair of Design for the AIA Board of Directors, my focus concentrates on reestablishing good design in Hawai i as well as improving the publics expectations for excellence in design. The AIA has a great opportunity to become the venue for dialogue, critical thinking and inspiration amongst our membership. Increasing informal events such as discussion groups, collaborative competitions and architectural travel tours will encourage membership interaction and dialogue; I believe resulting in a higher level of design excellence. We need to encourage design that excites our souls and remind us of why we belong to a profession of such incredible stature and public intrigue. The AIA needs to take on a major role in educating the general public about good design, sharing examples of architecture of excellence. Through public events, publications and physical examples, the general public will learn about good design and eventually expect it. In addition, the AIA needs to encourage and challenge its own membership to step up and produce architecture of this level. Mahalo for your support. Mark M. Nakao, AIA Biography: Mark Nakao was born and raised in Hawai i. He received his Bachelor s degree in Architecture for the University of Oregon in Prior to returning home in 1990, he gained valuable experience working two small architectural design offices in Seattle, Washington. His work experience has taken him to Japan, Saipan, Okinawa and Malaysia. Mark is currently the principal architect at KFC Airport, Inc. Philosophy: It has taken me eighteen years to say with confidence that I truly love my job! I wake up every morning with the passion and enthusiasm to tackle challenges of our ever changing environment. As a board member, I will utilize this passion as a springboard to strengthen the mission of the AIA Honolulu by creating an energized arena that engages active participation from our members. Re-emphasizing the value of what we do and can do for the membership, our efforts will encourage positive results by creating synergy within the organization, allied building professionals and the community at large. I am excited to initiate the journey and am passionately committed in making the AIA Honolulu the best it can be! Philip K. White, AIA Biography: Philip White is currently President of Philip K. White & Associates. Established in 1984, Philip K. White & Associates has been honored with national and local design awards for resort work, office buildings, museums, medical clinics and custom residences. He is a 1970 graduate of Colgate University and has been a member of the American Institute of Architects since Philip has served as President of the Board for several nonprofit organizations: Parents and Children Together, Family Peace Center, and HUGS. He currently serves on the board of the Pacific War Memorial Association and volunteers for the Joint Planning Committee of the Kawaiha o Church.

White) Philosophy: At a recent groundbreaking and blessing, I was deeply moved when the kahu reminded members of the development, design and construction teams that we had made plans to change the land beneath us and we were all responsible to the land to see that the process and the project were done right. Often our responsibility to do things right is lost in the process. We are responsible to our island community and our clients to make the environment better with our work. The areas that I plan to focus my efforts as a director will education, public policy positions and the overall image of architects in the community. Two areas of education standout as most important: 1). Education and mentoring of the next generation of architects. 2). Education of the public at large of the long term benefits of well designed built environment. For architects, public policy debate should take on a role beyond codes and procurement. As architects we should be actively outlining appropriate solutions for critical public projects. As architects we enjoy a special place in our community. We can strengthen our public image by being advocates for the built environment and by showing the way to improve the quality of life in our community. Position: Associate Director, 2006 (1) Kristopher Oliveros, Assoc. AIA Biography: Kristopher Oliveros, Assoc. AIA received an Associate degree in Architectural drafting technology from Leeward Community College in He then worked a year for an Engineering firm where he realized his love for architecture. He then earned BArch from the University of Hawai i School of Architecture in He is now an intern architect at ADI Design Group Inc. Kristopher is currently on the University of Hawai i School of Architecture Alumni Association Board Of Directors Vice President. Philosophy: I m a strong believer of change and change should start from within; similar to the Associate AIA membership, where members transition from internship to registered Architect. The Associate AIA membership helps to build confidence by providing insights to its members through extensive contact with architects knowledgeable of the licensure process. The Associate AIA also provides members an exposure to the architect leaders and leaders of the community. I believe that during this transition process, Associate AIA members need to grow side by side with their community so that in time, these soon-to-be licensed architects know the community they serve. These two strong entities, architecture and community, are entwined into one whole. One cannot move forward without the other. I look forward to working with the members and the community in all the different wonderful programs up ahead..
