The architectural review media pack 2012
introduction The Architectural Review has embarked on a new chapter in its long and distinguished history. It is not a cosmetic redesign, but a comprehensive editorial relaunch, intended to offer critical thinking for critical times. In a media climate increasingly in thrall to the shallow and superficial, there is a clear need for a renewed and serious engagement with architecture and all the issues that affect and sustain it. From the napkin sketch to key historical moments revisited, the new AR will provide intellectual sustenance and stimulus across the full scope of architectural production, aimed at reconnecting architects with their core purpose of transforming human life for the better.
front section Overview Thought-provoking comment and analysis of the key issues, from economics to ecology, that are impacting on architecture Broader view A short essay by a high-profile contributor from another discipline who will share their thinking with the architectural community Viewpoints An exciting new line-up of columnists from practice and academia, including Farshid Moussavi and Peter Cook View from... The AR s roster of international contributors provide dispatches from around the world, aimed at conveying a unique sense of place
buildings section Beautifully illustrated critiques of key new buildings are still at the heart of the AR. Selected projects are featured in greater depth, with longer pieces of criticism from a distinguished international line-up of writers and critics. Photography, much of it specially commissioned, brings each building to life, while comprehensive drawings, including technical details, provide the key to understanding the architect s intentions. Over time, this builds into an impressive and invaluable resource, a library of ideas and inspiration that the majority of AR readers keep for repeated reference
back SECTION Theory Architectural theory has become ever-more disconnected from practice. The AR s new Theory section aims to close this gap with provocative and pertinent architectural discourse Revisit The new Revisit feature re-examines a ground-breaking project from a previous era, evaluating whether the project succeeded and what lessons can be drawn from it Typology Typology, a major new quarterly feature, focuses in detail on a different building type in order to assess how wider changes are affecting architectural production in a specific sector
Skill Skill studies techniques from several projects to frame a discussion around a particular architectural/technical enquiry Pedagogy Drawing on architectural schools from around the world, this new feature focuses on a specific tutor to explore the most effective ways to teach architecture as both a cultural endeavour and a practical discipline. This consistent focus on student work is unique to the AR Landscape and Urbanism Essays on the changing nature of urbanism and landscape explore the connective tissue that binds individual buildings together Exploring Eye Perceptive travelogues from around the globe illuminate buildings and places beyond the beaten track Reviews The latest books, exhibitions and happenings from the worlds of architecture, art and design Reputations Forming a thought-provoking coda to each issue, Reputations assesses the legacy and critical influence of a major figure s contribution to architecture
Testimonials and awards Congratulations on the relaunch. I think it s a really well-considered and well-executed move to reclaim authority for print. I enjoyed the longer pieces and the new format. Steve Parnell, writer and academic, UK I was glad to witness that the new AR avoided the sirens of trendy covers and coffee table contents. In a sense, it was brave enough, on your side, to insist on a demanding and rewarding content. Sadly enough, today, only a handful of periodicals are meant to be read and architectural projects are presented as illustrated brand names of star architects. I m sure of the success of this initiative and that will instigate important debates in classrooms and amphitheatres. Vassilis Ganiatsas, academic, Greece At last I ve seen the new AR and I m very impressed by it. Great that there s so much to read. You ve eliminated the irritating mannerisms without introducing any obvious ones of your own. I wish you all the best with it. Andrew Mead, writer and critic, UK I just received the October issue of the AR very convincing. Congratulations on the new concept. Kaye Geipel, editor, Bauwelt magazine, Germany Well done! The new AR looks and feels like the real deal. The re-evaluation of Park Hill will, I hope, be the first of many such revisits. Welcome too is the renewed emphasis on theory. Granville Heptonstall, architect, UK Very, very interesting that the AR has invested in re-launching its print version rather than making the fashionable move online. I applaud you for this. Print journalism is an authoritative voice in this hubbub of noise and is inherently discerning in its choice of content. The authoritative tone of the AR perfectly complements its decision to re-engage with print. The contributions speak with conviction and draw fascinating conclusions. Long live authoritative print journalism! Georgie Day, architecture student, UK I have to admit that I was on the point of cancelling my subscription to AR. So the new AR, which is really the old AR brought back to life, has brought great sighs of relief. David Robson, writer and architect, UK Congratulations AR a great design and a provocative and exciting launch issue. You re keeping us at AD on our toes. Helen Castle, editor, AD magazine, UK At last. Buildings photographed with people, theoretical considerations, post-occupancy evaluation, economic analysis, pedagogical teaching methods, sustainability, something to read and critiques at last. Architecture in its proper human and geographical context. Keep going. Nigel C Lewis, architect, UK Congrats on the relaunch! The magazine looks great. Geoff Manaugh, writer and editor, BLDGBL0G website, USA I just wanted to drop you a line and congratulate you on the relaunch of the AR. I think that, at last, it looks as it should: a serious and content-led periodical great, something I used to love the AR having. Even if it is still rather retro, I am glad that there are new sections that deal specifically with theory and reviews. Andrew Daws, architect, UK I would like to congratulate the AR on its editorial makeover, with its new focus on debate and theory. Patrik Schumacher, Zaha Hadid Architects, UK I m delighted to see the re-born AR! Halcyon days. I ve just inherited a stack of 1930s ARs stylish beyond words and deliciously erudite. I m looking forward to the AR regaining its proper place in the pantheon of gods. Tim Soar, architectural photographer, UK The new AR looks fantastic. Been waiting a long time for this: the kind of material we ll dig out of the archive in 50 years. Paul Simkins, architect, UK RECENT AWARDS The Architectural Review Magazine of the Year International Building Press Awards 2010 and 2011 Catherine Slessor Editor of the Year British Society of Magazine Editors Awards 2010

AR Website Alongside the redesign of the print magazine, The Architectural Review has also relaunched its website Complementing the existing repertoire of features and the AR s extensive historical archive, the site offers an array of new material. The website is updated with each monthly issue in line with the publication of the magazine. Taking advantage of the immediacy of this digital medium and creating a wider and more intimate relationship with the readership, the site also features news items and extra material, providing continuous contact with subscribers. In addition to this up-to-the-minute coverage, the AR is also continually adding to its online archive where, with just a click of a mouse, readers have access to a fascinating and ever-increasing range of content spanning the century and The Architectural Review s history since its foundation in ,000 page impressions per month (Sept Nov 2011 average 119,033) 30,000 users per month (Sept Nov 2011 average 29,428) Average user session: 7mins 26 secs
Innovators interviews Undertaken in partnership with Hunter Douglas, the Innovators Interviews are monthly interviews with leading architectural figures. All the selected interviewees are synonymous with particularly innovative approaches to design. Exclusive to the AR website, the series has to date included Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor, Junya Ishigami and Renzo Piano. Interview transcripts and films provide fascinating insights into the minds of some of the world s most creative architects and are backed up by a wealth of archive material
ar Archive A key aspect of the AR s role is as a journal of record, forming a unique and irreplaceable archive. Since its foundation in 1896, the AR has tracked the development of modern architecture, attracting exceptional writers and photographers to analyse and record an unparalleled roll call of key buildings. Over time, this has built up into a major repository of insights and information that feeds through into the quality of discussion in the AR s pages and website. The AR s digital archive amplifies and illuminates current debate, forming a resonant link with the past and offering fresh perspectives on architectural history. With its own dedicated section on the AR website, the AR archive allows readers to consult original articles in a digital format, forming an invaluable resource for architects, academics and students
Awards The AR+D awards for emerging architecture Founded in 1999, the ar+d Awards for Emerging Architecture have grown into the most prestigious awards programme for young architects in the world, offering emerging practices an invaluable impetus on their trajectory to wider stardom. Awards are given for excellence across a broad spectrum of design, from buildings and urbanism, to landscaping and product design. All projects must be built and the age limit is 45. Sponsorship offers a unique opportunity to support this influential international architectural awards scheme and to demonstrate a commitment to the architects of the future as they evolve into mature designers. All winners are featured in an annual special issue of the AR
Awards ar house Founded in 2010, AR House is a major new award for the best one-off house, with a prize fund of 10,000. The history of modern architecture can be traced through a series of pioneering dwellings, and the commission for a private house is one that most architects address in their careers, often using it as a testing ground for architectural experimentation. Sponsorship offers an opportunity to support this exciting new international awards scheme and to show a commitment to leading-edge design. AR House also has a strong appeal beyond the world of architecture
Awards AR Future Projects at MIPIM MIPIM, the international property development fair, attracts over 30,000 delegates to Cannes annually every March. Now in their tenth highly successful year, the MIPIM AR Future Project Awards are an established part of this key event. The awards celebrate projects in design or under construction, and consist of seven different categories. They offer a unique marketing opportunity to associate your company with innovative design and architecture at Europe s premier property event, and to network with an influential constituency from the property and construction sectors
Custom Publishing The AR provides a bespoke publishing service with a range of options to suit different requirements, from individual features to fully fledged practice monographs. Depending on their size, these can either feature within the magazine or be bound separately as stand-alone supplements, and be distributed with an issue to the AR s global network of subscribers. Recent supplements have included City Guides to Barcelona and London, and a monograph marking the 40th anniversary of Architecture PLB. Individual product features have included Miele, GKD and FSB. All custom publishing reflects the AR s high standards of writing, production and design, and its experienced editorial team can advise on content and format

A brief history of the AR The Architectural Review was founded in 1896 and has been published continuously since then. Early issues aimed to make the discussion of architecture visual as well as verbal. The 1920s and 1930s saw the AR engage more actively with new architectural movements, with commissioned pieces from Le Corbusier, Ernö Goldfinger, Berthold Lubetkin and Walter Gropius. Nikolaus Pevsner, the distinguished German art and architecture historian, began his career at the AR. By the end of the 1930s, the AR s reputation was established as the leading English language architectural magazine, with a worldwide constituency of readers and a reputation for liveliness and diversity. In the post-war years of new ideas, its reputation for scholarship grew, as did its campaigning zeal. Since then, the AR has consolidated its intellectual and visual superiority. During the 1980s and 1990s, special issues on landscape, art and ecology, and architecture and climate, indicated a prescient engagement with crucial environmental issues. Now, a decade into the new century, the AR has embarked on a new era, addressing the challenges presented by the current economic and environmental crises, offering critical thinking for critical times. Anchored by its deep historical roots and inspired by the potential of the digital age, the AR continues to inform, enlighten and reconnect with new generations of readers ar october
