1 Report on Ward Data Prepared by the Burlington Economic Development Corporation
2 Contents 1. Business Composition Data Labour Force Data Consumer Spending Data Demographic Data Transportation and Commuting Patterns Development Activity Vacant Employment Land Data for Burlington is available from multiple sources. There may be discrepancies in some numbers. This report uses demographic and economic data as provided by Environics Analytics, adapted by Burlington Economic Development Corporation (BEDC). It is worth noting that business counts in particular vary considerably from Canadian Business Counts statistics.
3 1. Business Composition Data Knowing the make-up of businesses within an area is essential to understanding that area s economy. Business composition is an effective way to evaluate the demand for specific goods and services in the area, as well as a location s economic diversity. Below is the makeup of businesses by industry within Burlington, organized by the industry with the most business to the fewest. Table 1 Business Composition in Burlington Business Classification Number of Businesses Percentage Retail: Home, Food, Automobiles, Personal Care % Other Services - Repair, Personal Care, Laundry, Religious, etc % Health Care and Social Services % Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services % Accommodation and Food Services % Construction % Wholesalers % Banking, Finance and Insurance % Manufacturing - Electronics, Furniture, Machinery, Metal, % Transportation, Misc. 4 A cursory look at the top 5 industries within each ward allows for a quick overview of the dominant business types across wards. It is quickly apparent that Burlington is a highly services and retail focused economy. Notably, Wards 4 and 5 appear more diversified at first glance, with a higher share of businesses in Wholesale and lower share in Accommodation and Food Services. Relative to the industry makeup of Burlington, Ward 1 has a higher share of businesses in the Retail: Home, Food, Automobiles, and Personal Care industries; Ward 2 has a significantly higher share in Health Care and Social Services. 7 Percent of Residents 2. Labour Force Data Labour Force Data is important to augment understanding of economic activity in Burlington in addition to the aforementioned business composition. This is based on the people that live in the area and may work inside or outside of it. The following data displays labour force employment by occupation. Table 3 Labour Force Employment in Burlington Occupations in Burlington Number of Employees Percentage Sales and service occupations 21,850 23% Business, finance and administration occupations 14,909 16% Occupations in education, law and social, community and 12,928 14% government services Management occupations 11,523 12% Trades, transport and equipment operators and related 10,394 11% occupations Natural and applied sciences and related occupations % Health occupations % Occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport % Occupations in manufacturing and utilities % Natural resources, agriculture and related production % occupations Total 94, % Source: Environics Analytics, 2018 The labour force data shows that Burlington has a high number of sales and service job employees, with nearly a quarter of employment in this category. Burlington has a strong manufacturing job base, but on the labour side residents employed in manufacturing make up a small percent total labour force. This indicates that the people employed in this sector are coming from outside the city, and further confirms that Burlington s labour force is highly service based.
