9 Lake Weir is described by professional appraisers as one of the finest recrea onal lakes in the State of Florida. It is located midway between Ocala and Leesburg, and supports a host of different recrea onal ac vi es. The main part of the lake is approximately 4 miles in diameter with an addi onal body of water (Li le Lake Weir) connected by a canal. Lake Weir is about 6000 acres of pure water and white sand beaches. It is unique when compared to other larger lakes in Florida as it has a sand bo om as opposed to a mud bo om. It has about 38 miles of shoreline, a maximum depth of over 20. There are 2 restaurants on the lake and it adjoins County owned Carney Island. Lake Weir can also be u lized for amphibious planes and you will occasionally see one pulling up to Gator Joe s for dinner or just a break in your schedule. Marion County, FL is a center of history. There are 30 places in the County that are in the Na onal Register of Historic Places and 5 of them are in the li le City of Ocklawaha or nearby East Lake Weir. US 27 in Belleview go 5.7 miles East on Hwy. 25 to a sign on right Carney Island. This property is: 90 minutes to either Orlando or Tampa Interna onal airports. 4 1/2 hours to Miami 2 Hours North to Georgia line 12 miles to The Villiages The property is accessed by passing through the entrance at Carney Island Park and turning le on to a private fenced and enclosed drive. Access is by appointment only. Please call Agent The Lake Weir area has a rich history. The area has historically supported agriculture uses da ng back to the 1600 s. The Spanish missionaries first visited the Lake Weir region around 1600, the Timucuan Indians occupied Marion County. The diseases carried by the Europeans decimated the local tribes by mid Around 1700, the Creek Indians were forced into Florida by the Bri sh and swi ly became known as the Seminoles. Many Seminoles se led in the Lake Weir area where they farmed and raised livestock. The Seminoles named this area Amask Kehegan meaning Bright Moon Lake. In the 1800 s, the lake was named in honor of U.S. Army Lieutenant Weir, who was killed near the lake s banks by the Seminole Indians in the early 1800 s. In 1875, Captain John L. Carney and his brother E.L. Carney purchased the land now known as Carney Island. They developed a 25 acre orange grove, which later grew in size. The Carney s were responsible for propaga ng several new varie es of citrus, including the Parson Brown variety. For most of the last century, the area surrounding the Carney groves flourished as a citrus producing region. The citrus was shipped by steamboat from a packinghouse on the east shore of the property across Lake Weir to the railroad. Pilings s ll exist on the property today from this packinghouse. A hard freeze in 1894 wiped out the citrus trees around Lake Weir. Most groves were re established, and citrus groves have remained an important agricultural industry in Florida. Over the years, several fruit growing companies had interest in the Carney Island property, and it was eventually acquired by the Coca Cola Company in 1960 when they purchased the Minute Maid Corpora on. In 1990, officials with Coca Cola sold the Carney Island property to Marion County. The Marion County Planning Dept. has indicated that this 89 acre lakefront property could be sub divided to accommodate 40+ large high end homes on 2 acre lots by qualifying for a PUD and mee ng the requirements as to water, sewer, etc. The owners prefer the property stays private to be enjoyed by a person loving solitude as their families have done but realize they have no control over what a buyer might do following purchase of the property.
