6 Upstate in the News Owner of 3 El Patron restaurants in Anderson to open local branch By Angelia Davis Staff writer, The Greenville News March 13, 21 Jesus Sanchez soon will have a new answer for those who call wanting to know where his Greenville restaurant is located. In May, he'll open his first Greenville restaurant, El Patron, in the former Cracker Barrel restaurant building on Woodruff Road. Sanchez already has three El Patron restaurants in the Anderson area. He said folks from Greenville have been inquiring about a restaurant here. He's also had real estate agents and business owners trying to get him to open in Greenville. They've been trying to bring me there for about a year and I say, No. The situation is not too good.' They say, Well, just try and we can help you,' he said. I say, OK. Let's try.' I think it's time to do that. Sanchez hopes to open in the 8,-square-foot building in time for Cinco de Mayo in May. His restaurants feature authentic Mexican food, a full bar, a lunch buffet and salsa dancing. Tim Roller, of NAI Earle Furman who represented Sanchez in leasing the Greenville building and is also an Anderson native, said the restaurant offers exceptional quality food. Sanchez expects to do well in Greenville also. The location, he said, is a strong one. Everyone wants to go to Woodruff Road for some reason so I think all the strong restaurants are on Woodruff Road. We at El Patron want to be part of that, he said. When Sanchez, who'll celebrate his 38th birthday on March 25, left his home in Mexico to come to the United States, he said he wasn't prepared to open a restaurant. You have to know how the business runs so that's the reason I didn't do it. You need to be ready for that. It's not that easy. It's a long process, Sanchez said. He came to the U.S. initially to attend six weeks of school in California and return to Mexico. Instead, a chef friend invited him to Greenville. He's been in the Upstate since. Sanchez said he has been cooking since he was a child. When he got to Greenville, he worked for about four years in a Chinese restaurant, washing dishes and learning to cook Chinese food. Then I come out, serve tables and run the place as a manager. After that, you can put some money together and think about it (opening a restaurant), he said. I was thinking if I'm going to stay here I don't want to open a Chinese restaurant. So I just moved to Mexican restaurants and tried to learn the food over here. The first El Patron (The Boss) opened on State 81 about 13 years ago. The other locations in Anderson are near the Old Navy store on Station Drive and the Anderson Mall on North Main Street.. All the cooks in El Patron are members of Sanchez's family so we keep the condiment secrets in the family. Copyright (c) The Greenville News. All rights reserved.
7 Upstate in the News IMAX, 3-D Theater to Open in Simpsonville Next Month - New Theater Has 14 Screens Fox Carolina Jennifer Phillips reporting March 3, 21 SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. -- Customers packed Milanos Pizzeria Restaurant in Simpsonville on Monday night. George Papamanolis owns the place, and said it is a family business. "This is not our hobby," Papamanolis said. "This is our love." Soon, Papamanolis could see new faces. About a block away, the Great Escape movie theater will open on April 29. "We're going to get some traffic here," Papamanolis said. "A lot of people are going to get jobs that they need, and I think it's going to be a good thing for Simpsonville." Papamanolis said that the new theater could mean more customers and more business for him. "If it does bring a lot of people here, of course, people are going to come over and try pizza or pasta or whatever they want to eat," said Papamanolis. The new 14-screen theater is the only IMAX facility in the Upstate. It is equipped with 3-D technology and 4-foot-tall screens. It also features stadium seating. An entertainment company out of Indiana is behind the $14 million project. "This is just a high-quality offering that has not been available here or in this area outside of going up to Charlotte or down to Atlanta," said Simpsonville City Administrator Russell Hawes. Hawes said the new cinematic attraction will help revitalize the area, especially since the theater is located near Interstate 385. "This is an area that is really ripe for development," Hawes said. "We've had a lot of interest from a number of folks who are looking at different types of operations." If the theater translates to more people in the area, then business owners like Papamanolis can serve up what Simpsonville has to offer. Copyright (c) Fox Carolina. All rights reserved.
