FEEDBACK REPORT

PRESENTED BY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AFFILIATED ORGANISATIONS ASSOCIATES AND PARTNERS MEDIA PARTNERS EXHIBITORS EST.1922

OVERVIEW The Architecture ZA 2018(AZA2018), the official CPD accredited conference of SAIA, was cohosted by the Departments of Architecture of both the University of Pretoria (UP) and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). It was hosted in Pretoria at the inner city 012- venue from 3-5 May 2018, and consisted of keynote sessions by international architects, parallel sessions with presentations by SAIA members, exhibitions, tours, and official evening events. Speaking to the AZA18 theme, namely WeTheCity: Memory & Resilience, key note sessions as well as parallel sessions were structured according to how key thinkers and practitioners engage around the often contentious topics of Heritage and Memory. The idea of resilience formed another trajectory of presentations, often overlapping with the idea of memory. International keynote presenters were selected based on the AZA18 theme, and with the exception of one, hailed from other BRICS countries. The carefully curated focus area was also the criteria for selection of presenters from SAIA s list of meritorious practices that entered the national awards. In order to reinforce the content, a few speakers outside SAIA s list were invited in order to offer depth and contrast within the topics under discussion.

PROGRAMME International keynotes were given one hour to present their work in relation to WeTheCity: Memory & Resilience ; while local practitioners were given 20 minute slots within parallel sessions where the sequence was also carefully constructed to form a narrative over the course of the two days. The two-day lectures programme was very dense, but in retrospect worked well. Energy was focused and there was a compelling momentum. The 20-minute cap on timeslots was consciously reinforced with speakers prior to the event to make sure that the tight program could work. There were minor slips here and there that could be better managed in future by the programme director. The balance of five international keynotes over two days worked extremely well. Each day started with a key note session to set the scene for the narratives to follow; and then was built up to a final keynote session, in order to end each day on a high note. Keeping the master classes on the third day with no additional presentations offered just the right balance/relief. The overall theme was seemingly well received and the venue spoke to the underlying pressing issues raised accordingly. The silent meeting concept worked particularly well, and could be something to consider in future conferences. The fact that all attendees could engage with all speakers on an equal basis during breaks and over lunches offered opportunities for deeper conversations and engagement, which was not possible within for example, the keynote time slots. There was a lot of room for engagement within the parallel streams, with at least 5 minutes of q+a time following each session. The final programme was not shared with the major sponsors (eg Geberit), nor with the on-site caterers an unnecessary and embarrassing oversight that will have to be addressed in future. While the programme was continuously managed with announcements of what happens next, attendees often still felt they did not know what was going on (despite the printed programme each received!). Perhaps one could project the next activity on the screens during breaks with the next conference.

1. PARALLEL SESSION AND PANEL SPEAKERS ALBRECHT HERHOLDT My talk will be about New approaches to conservation in the context of the new South Africa with the sub title: How to make colonial buildings assets for all. I will refer to the Campanile Restoration, the Alterations & Renovations to the Port Elizabeth Opera House and the Mendi Multi-Purpose Centre. ANNE GRAUPNER & THORSTEN DECKLER south Architects is named after Johannesburg, a harsh and dynamic city formed by a succession of exploitative regimes. Through working critically in this context, south Architects has come up with a unique mode of thinking and building that combines architecture, urban design and knowledge management. The resultant built work is both rational and poetic, informed by teaching and research projects that offer new insights into the city to come. 26¹10 was founded in 2004 by Anne Graupner and Thorsten Deckler. Both studied and worked under Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas respectively and have lectured locally and abroad. ANTHONY ORELOWITZ Anthony started Paragon Architects in 1997 with Henning Rasmuss. The practice has grown over the last 20 years to include staff of over 100 people. There are few people who have contributed more to the defining of the Sandton skyline than Anthony. His response to changes in technology and exploiting them, keep Johannesburg abreast with the best of world architecture. CARIN COMBRINCK Dr Carin Combrinck has been teaching in the department of Architecture at University of Pretoria since 2010, where she heads up the research field of Human Settlements and Urbanism. Having been a practicing architect for fifteen years prior to that, her focus in the academy has been largely to develop a socially responsive approach to the production of architecture, a process that relies on participative field research and collaborative design practices. In this regard, her interest has been on developing an awareness of spatial redress that manifests in the peripheral areas in and around our cities, such as townships and informal settlements. Her current endeavours include the establishment of a Unit for Urban Citizenship within the faculty, with the intent of enabling curriculum transformation and social impact through community engagement. CARON SCHNAID AND SERENAL NADAR Hospitals are highly emotive. While serving to manage and contain disease, hospitals are innately spiritual, providing sanctuary for patients and visitors to heal, and spaces for introspection and quietness. In 2006, Nelson Mandela expressed a vision of creating a dedicated children s hospital that would provide leading paediatric healthcare in Southern Africa by upholding the values and principles of accessible healthcare for all children. Serenal Nadar, Senior Technical Manager at Ruben Reddy Architects, and Caron Schnaid, Associate at GAPP Architects and Urban Designers, will share the journey of this inimitable project s conception, design and construction; and the vision that allowed it to successfully integrate into the surrounding heritage precinct. EMMANUEL NKAMBULE Dr. Nkambule studied at the University of Pretoria in 2005 (BSc Arch) and 2008 (MArch(Prof)) after only completing his first year at the University of Swaziland in 2002 ( B.Sc. in Physics and Mathematics). He worked as an intern both in Pretoria and Swaziland during the period with various practices on small and large projects. He worked for KWP Architects in Pretoria between 2003 and 2008 and from 2009 to 2010 he worked for Brad Walker Architects in Mbabne, Swaziland, while teaching at the Swaziland College of Technology.

PARALLEL SESSION AND PANEL SPEAKERS ENRIQUE BROWNE Enrique Browne is one of Chile s most prolific architects and is co-founder of Browne & Swett Arquitectos in Santiago. Over the past forty years, he has been trying to reconcile the natural and artificial worlds through architecture. His innovative projects incorporate multiple environmental aspects that result in a complex, layered response to the challenges of place, form and identity. A highly regarded and prolific writer and designer, Browne s inimitable way of looking at the world will bring new perspectives to #AZA18. GABRIELA CARRILLO Hailed as Architect of the Year in the 2017 Women in Architecture Awards by The Architectural Review and the Architects Journal, Gabriela Carrillo is a Mexican architect and co-director of the multi-award-winning practice Taller de Arquitectura Mauricio Rocha + Gabriela Carrillo. Using every project as an opportunity to develop her thoughts on space, light and shadow, perspective, warmth and atmosphere, Carrillo intends to share with the #AZA18 audience, the strategies that she has developed while working in a place always in crisis, together with the opportunities that these scenarios can afford. GUY BRIGGS Guy Briggs joined dhk in 2012 as Head of Urban Design and was appointed Director in He has extensive experience in the development of urban design frameworks, design codes and design guidelines, urban regeneration, development strategy and master planning locally and internationally. Guy has lectured in the UK, USA and SA and has published his work in aspects of regeneration, urbanism and sustainability. He previously spent 12 years in London as Urban Design Director at EDAW (now AECOM). Guy is a SACAP registered architect, a member of the Urban Design Institute of South Africa, an Academician of the Academy of Urbanism (UK), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (UK). HEATHER DODD With a particular interest in social housing and urban regeneration, Heather Dodd of the awardwinning practice Savage + Dodd Architects, believes in the power of design in restorative spatial justice and urban resilience. At #AZA18, she will address the importance of designing buildings and places that put people first, and cities that are resilient to change. Through her work, Heather has contributed significantly to the revitalisation of the Johannesburg inner city. She values the AZA platform as a space for collaboration and networking, exposure to new ideas, and serendipitous exchange. HEIDI BOULANGER Heidi Boulanger (van Eeden) currently lives in Cape Town, South Africa, where she works as a professional Architect for studiomas. She obtained her Master s degree from the University of Pretoria in 2013, receiving a cum laude and winning the National Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year Awards for her thesis, Machinarium. Heidi s personal work focuses on regenerative Architecture and sustainable design solutions in a changing, 21st-Century context. Her research blurs the boundaries of architecture as a spatial construct by incorporating ecological principles, urban patterns, historical palimpsest and socio-economic concerns among other fields to generate new spatial theories for 21st-century design. Rather than suggesting concrete solutions, Heidi believes in the ability of Architectural conjecture to provoke further debate across various fields. HENRI COMRIE Through engaging in a world of ideas and retaining a sense of wonder, URBA Architects and Urban Designers uses design to actively demonstrate what is possible. Founding partner, Henri Comrie, believes that architects should be effective city builders who are concerned with how each building contributes towards more integrated streets and cities. At #AZA18, he will explore architectural interventions as layers in time that have the capacity to both respond and project within a wider context; and he looks forward to exchanging and implementing ideas by listening to the stories of others.

PARALLEL SESSION AND PANEL SPEAKERS HENNING HOLM Passive efficient design ensures ecological and economical balanced development a need to provide present development demands / needs without deteriorating the environment for future generations. NABEEL ESSA Nabeel Essa is the principal of the award-winning exhibition and heritage specialist architectural practice OFFICE 24 7 ARCHITECTURE. The practice has unique curatorial and design skills in combining spatial understanding with new ways of re- interpreting museums and exhibitions. NADIA TROMP Driven by the desire to create purpose in her work, Ntsika Architects Nadia Tromp is determined to bring meaningful architecture to marginalised communities that have never before experienced good architecture. She feels strongly that architecture should be catalytic, extending beyond the boundaries of a single building, with a focussed impact on the urban environment. She values #AZA18 as an opportunity for interchange between interested parties in the architectural sphere, from practitioners and educators, to students, suppliers and stakeholder.

PARALLEL SESSION AND PANEL SPEAKERS NICHOLAS CLARKE Nicholas, academic, architect and heritage practitioner, holds a Masters degree in Environmental Design in Architecture from Cambridge University. Formerly a full-time member staff at the University of Pretoria, he is now associated with the Heritage and Architecture section at Delft University of Technology. His research focus lies in the interface of built heritage, sustainability and resilience. PETER BARBER Renowned architect and urbanist, Peter Barber, heads up an award-winning, design-orientated practice with a portfolio of prestigious projects that includes a number of ground-breaking mixeduse and residential schemes; a series of radical urban housing projects which have variously won Housing Design Awards, RIBA Awards and AIA Awards; as well as individual buildings such as the Villa Anbar, twice shortlisted for the international Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The practice centres around the premise that space conditions, and is in turn conditioned by, society and culture; and that architecture can create the potential for social action and activity. PHILL MASHABANE Phill pursued his studies in Paris where he obtained his Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) and three years later enrolled and completed his LLB. In 2012 he completed his studies Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) with the University of Pretoria. In 2015 Phill completed his studies in MSc (knowledge and Project Management) University of Salford. Phill has been an external examiner in a number tertiary institutions in South Africa & abroad and has presented seminars on Professional Practice. PHILIP DU TOIT A strong conceptual thinker and designer, Philip du Toit specialises in housing and theory at Osmond Lange Architects & Planners in Cape Town. He is driven by the challenge of changing the world for the better. I believe that one of the biggest challenges is to stay focused on what matters in a world where project decisions are often based on money and not on what is good for the user. Part of this challenge is to proactively use budgets as motivators for innovation. At #AZA18, Philip will be exploring meaning and purpose in creative projects; and questioning what architecture could and should be about. REON VAN DE WIEL After graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand, Reon van der Wiel began work for Activate Architecture in 2003 as a Professional Architect. Showing strong leadership and project management abilities, he became a shareholder and director of Activate in He has been an integral part of the development of the practice, office systems management, and the design and implementation of all projects in the practice. He has comprehensive understanding of client needs and complexity, project programming, building design, construction oversight and principle agency, and his experience has included all stages of work from project appraisal to project close out on significant projects. He is an accredited professional with the Green Building Council of South Africa. SAMEEP PADORA As principal of the award-winning design studio sp+a in Mumbai, Sameep Padora s work covers projects across a range of socio-economic and cultural contexts, exploring how traditional techniques can be appropriated through a process of evolution, and informed by global and regional networks, to become relevant in a contemporary context. He is interested in the subterfuge of capitalism, the idea of the open city and the qualities particular to the Indian context. sp+a s studio structure actively engages with research, collaborations and collective models of practice as symbiotic streams feeding into each other.

2. MASTERCLASSES The two master classes were well attended in fact, there was not enough room to accommodate the amount of interest. Over 250 people applied for each master class against an anticipated 50 per class, and in the end just over 70 participants could be accommodated in each. A brief description of both follows: 495 CITY Masterclass 1 The 495 CITY masterclass was presented by locals south architects, and international architects Sameep Padora and Peter Barber. It explored and expanded architects role in how cities develop through the provision of affordable housing. The feedback from this masterclass was incredibly positive. Masterclass 2 This masterclass explored the themes of the evolution, heritage and revitalisation of the inner city. The class considered how to accommodate complex layers of history and contested heritage whilst formulating strategies to design for and live in the African contemporary city. The masterclass was led by Marianne de Klerk and Gerrit Jordaan with Prof Marieke Kuipers. Both master classes were sponsored by others. Thorsten Deckler found sponsorship from Corobrik, while the Kingdom of the Netherlands funded the second one. In both cases, the initiative was taken by the leaders of the master classes, who had to do extensive prepaprtion work prior to the actual event. I thought this was perhaps a bit awkward or is that acceptable?

3. TOURS There were two inner city tours. The first, led by local architect Adriaan Louw, was a rooftop sunrise tour that explored several hidden spaces in the inner city. The feedback from this tour was that it was one of the highlights of the AZA18. The second tour was led by Marianne De Klerk to key modernist and historic buildings, public spaces and arcades. This tour lacked focus and because of the size of the group, was difficult to manage.

4. COROBRIK SAIA AWARDS EVENING GALA DINNER Once again the Corobrik SAIA Awards evening was held in tandem with AZA18, which meant that Central Pretoria was abuzz with architectural activity during the first week of May Hosted every two years the AZA18 and Corobrik SAIA Awards, two of SAIA s most prominent events, were well attended and showed evidence of growth in terms of stature and popularity amongst architects and other related professionals. By hosting these events alongside, yet separately, to each other, architects were able to save time and money, while attending both prestigious SAIA events. The engaging nature and stature of the events, together with the fact that through them, outstanding architecture was celebrated, helped attract many architects, including those that could be considered South Africa s leading lights. These factors make these events highly attractive to sponsors, wishing to engage with architects. The venues chosen for these flagship 2018 events were architecturally and historically interesting and appropriate; large and allowed for ease of movement and networking; could be used creatively and innovatively; were in close proximity which made logistics easier and more efficient and inspired a vibrant atmosphere as they are part of Tshwane city landscape and buzz. The visual and intellectually inspiring AZA18, culminated in the celebration of the best architecture of our time, recognised and celebrated at the Corobrik SAIA Awards. Perhaps it could be said that the Corobrik SAIA Awards provided the crescendo to the highly stimulating, engaging AZA18 and so in this way these events complimented each other. Positive reports were received from delegates, gala dinner invitees and sponsors who said that they found events well-attended, professional, informative and memorable. Thus a solid bedrock has been established on which to build on to ensure the success of future events.

5. STUDENT EXHIBITIONS AND ACTIVITIES There were several carefully curated exhibitions, including - TUT concrete urban furniture blocks by TUT students installed on street entrance and courtyard - Pretoria Inner City: Formation and Transformation Exhibition sponsored by the Kingdom of the Netherlands - SAIA s national award winning entries sponsored by Corobrik - PPC Imaginarium Competition sponsored by PPC - Boukunde s 75th year exhibition, sponsored by the students of Boukunde themselves The exhibitions were laid out to form the threshold upon entering the main venue space, with the inner city exhibition being one of the highlights. The venue worked well to create a lot of spatial opportunities for the enjoyment of the exhibitions. The feedback from the exhibitions was extremely positive.

6. TRADE EXHIBITIONS A small but high value trade exhibition took place at AZA18, positioned in and around the catering and networking areas of the venue.v

The numbers of the attendees reached a high of 1045 delegates and participants. This enabled an impressive fill up of the 012 Central building in Pretoria. The atmosphere at the conference was quite festive with the different university cultures meeting for one purpose. Out of the 1045 delegates 636 of them were students. The groups of students were from UP, TUT, CPUT, NUST, UKZN, UCT, UJ, UW, NMMU, Wits and UFS. The diverse attendance allowed for a unique way of sharing and learning in different concepts in architecture. The 237 professionals, company executives, and related stakeholders who attended the conference also took it as an advantage to learn the concepts that their fellows were speaking on. All the attendees of the conference delved into all the programs that were put together for them by the UP & TUT team led by Marguerite Pienaar. All the efforts done by the team and the attitude of all the delegates and participants allowed the whole conference to be a huge success. MEDIA AND STAKEHOLDER LIAISON: Five media releases were disseminated to 118 mainstream and sector-specific media contacts between January and end April, in the lead up to AZA18: #AZA18: WeTheCity #AZA18 line up of world-renowned Speakers #AZA18 WeTheCity: Human Rights in Architecture Exploring Resilience and Innovation at AZA18 Debating Memory and Meaning at AZA18 Leading up to the event, the Advertising Value Equivalency (AVE) was very satisfying at R2,222,459. However, media event coverage and post-event media interaction could be improved upon this is addressed under Recommendations. Overall AVE = R3,008, Additional exposure was attained through the SAIA Corobrik Awards to the value of R435,000 before AZA18, and to the value of R post-event. Over and above engagement with the media, regular content and the weekly newsletters were circulated to all stakeholders including SACAP, SAIA, all regional institutes, and the marketing teams at PPC and Cityprop / 012central for dissemination through their various channels. 3. SOCIAL MEDIA Management of the AZA18 social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter kicked off in mid- December Content management and engagement across the board was successful. FACEBOOK: You have 3,084 page likes and 3,082 page followers. We saw an increase across the board on Facebook and the performance analytics over a 90-day period indicate that TWITTER: In May 2018, your 311 tweets earned 69K impressions an increase of 100% from April. You also saw an increase of 1,694 profile visits, an increase of 27,1% mentions, and an increase of followers bringing your total to 1,768 followers. Thanks to the outstanding team appointed to cover the event, AZA18 was successful in trending locally and internationally. We created 93 posts during May and posted 21 times, as well as posted live stories during the event. During May you attracted 1,009 interactions which is an excellent result. 4. RECOMMENDATIONS: 4.1. WEBSITE: The website is the face of an event and should be used as a dynamic marketing tool. We highly recommend that an overarching website

carrying the AZA brand, and linking to the SAIA website, is designed and developed that is scalable, flexible and intuitive. The website should: carry the AZA brand through from one event to another; allow for integration of each AZA s theme/ look & feel within its structure, without requiring a full redesign every second year thus giving sponsors an historic overview of AZA and allowing use of historic content for use in presentations to sponsors, through social media channels etc; be mobile-first and include a programme matrix that is geared towards mobile; cater for broadcast/video; be easily updatable so that the marketing team can timeously make necessary changes to programme and speaker information; be updated with speaker presentations and photos from past events; incorporate an online payment system; have a subscription button for opting into the newsletter. If a solid foundation is put in place, then timeously adding speaker information, sponsors logos and so on becomes much easier which will ultimately contribute to a more efficient marketing campaign TIMELINES: The design direction of AZA18 was finalised in February 2018, just 3 months before the event took place. At this critical point, much time was spent retrospectively applying the look & feel to the website, promotional document, newsletters and social media channels. The development of a thematic look & feel for each event should not hold up the progress of the marketing campaign. Marketing efforts should kick off within the generic AZA brand as soon as each event is officially approved/launched by SAIA; with the look & feel being applied to the website once it is approved by the affiliate university MAINSTREAM MEDIA: Relationships with mainstream media need to be developed and nurtured on an ongoing basis. It is worth noting that mainstream media currently work on skeleton staff, with a high turnaround of journalists, many of whom are not well informed about architecture and its relevance to city development and city dwellers. It is strongly recommended that a media briefing is held at as soon as the theme and first few keynote speakers are secured, to inform journalists and secure the interest of the mainstream media. This may even contribute towards setting up a broader public discourse around the issues raised at AZA conferences. It is also recommended that at least one additional post-event media releases is budgeted for, to improve coverage of the event for publications that are themselves not able to attend the event SOCIAL MEDIA: We strongly advise that your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts continue to be managed in order to build on your growing audience; create very selective and carefully curated accounts; and maintain continuity between events. 5. CONCLUSION: It has been a privilege working with an organising team of such dedicated, insightful and proactive people. Feedback received on the AZA18 Marketing Campaign has been extremely positive, and we hope that the time and energy put into this aspect made a significant contribution to the high attendance at the event itself.

11. FINAL THANKS Overall, I believe all enjoyed the AZA18 and we had overwhelmingly positive feedback and response afterwards. Thank you to every one who contributed.
