INTRODUCTION Bronze plaques interspersed along Professors Walk on the Parkville campus of the University of Melbourne acknowledge recipients of the University of Melbourne Award. The Award recognises those individuals who have made an outstanding and enduring contribution to the University and its scholarly community. This includes academic and professional staff members who, through their professional work, teaching, research, scholarship, or institutional leadership, have contributed to the University s advancement as a public education institution and contributed to the intellectual and public life of the broader community. Founded in 1853, the University of Melbourne charts a long and colourful role in the development of Melburnian, Victorian and Australian society. Our scholarly community and diverse campuses owe their cultural vibrancy and rich traditions to the remarkable women and men who have dedicated their working lives to the pursuit of knowledge over the past 160 years. 1

2017 RECIPIENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE AWARD

Arthur Amies Professor Sir Arthur Barton Pilgrim Amies ( ) was appointed Professor of Dental Science at the University of Melbourne in 1934, an appointment which simultaneously made him Dean of the Faculty of Dental Science (later Dental Medicine and Surgery), Principal of the Australian College of Dentistry and Dean of the Dental Hospital. Amies served on the Dental Board of Victoria and was a key figure in the Australian Dental Association, first as President of its Victorian branch ( ) and later as its Federal President ( ). Elected a Fellow of Queen s College (1939), Amies was a councilor ( ) and he chaired the University s Professorial Board in Amies led the Faculty of Dental Science through a significant era of its development and was instrumental in advancing Dentistry, both in Victoria and nationally. One of Amies s many passions was the pursuit of a new and independent dental hospital and school in Melbourne, and he steadfastly maintained the need for in-patient accommodation in such an establishment. His vision was finally realised in 1963 with the construction of in-patient accommodation in the dental hospital, and in 1967 Sir Robert Menzies named the new building s Arthur Amies ward in recognition of his contribution. Amies also led significant debates in the dental profession and wider community, including around the introduction of community water fluoridation in Melbourne. Amies was a much respected member of the academy. As a teacher, Amies instilled in students a sense of social responsibility and professional pride, and he is fondly remembered by alumni of the Melbourne Dental School. James Angus Emeritus Professor James Angus AO (1949 ) has made a significant contribution to the University of Melbourne and the broader community through his inspiring research, teaching and leadership. His many distinguished appointments and roles include as Head of Department of Pharmacology, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences, President of the Academic Board, Pro Vice Chancellor, member of the University Council, and Chair of the Melbourne University Sport Board. In the wider community Angus has also served as Senior Advisor to the Minister s Health Innovation and Reform Council, Board Member of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, Director of the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, President of the National Stroke Foundation, and Chair of Melbourne Genomics Health Alliance. From 2009 until 2011, Angus was President of Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand. Held in the highest esteem in scientific, government and academic circles, Angus has led the consolidation of the University s leading role in biomedical, health science and health services research; he has also been immensely influential in the translation of this research into policy and practice. Angus oversaw the creation of world-class facilities and infrastructure to enable excellence in research and teaching in Melbourne and his collaborative approach to the development of health precincts has had a major impact on the University s capacity to deliver quality research, teaching and training. His consummate diplomacy in managing multifaceted relationships across institutions and disciplines has fostered and sustained partnerships that enrich health research, policies, services and outcomes on a local and international scale. Angus was awarded a 3

Centenary Medal in 2003 for his contribution to Pharmacology, and an Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to biomedical research, as a leading academic and medical educator, and as a contributor to range of boards and organisations. Carol Butters Carol Ann Butters ( ) commenced at the University in 1972 and enjoyed a long and distinguished career in education technology, financial administration and as Principal of Medley Hall. Butters played a key role in reforming the University s student support system by initially advocating for, establishing and directing the office of Student Financial Aid ( ). This led to much improved services for student health and housing, counselling and careers, as well as greater support for prospective and new students, academic skills development, sport and physical education. With no comparable offerings in the Australian higher education sector, her work and office became a model for other institutions. Butters served as the Principal of Medley Hall for seventeen years ( ). That the Medley Hall Council was composed of a diverse range of leaders who brought a wealth of experience to bear on the Hall s activities is a testimony to Butters good character. Butters also held the roles of Treasurer and Secretary for the network of Heads of College and Student Club Presidents. In this capacity, Butters led by example and contributed significantly to the culture of collegiality amongst college Heads. Mentoring Heads of Colleges at both Melbourne and other institutions, Butters left an enduring legacy that continues to benefit students today. Progressive and political, Butters was also a key figure in the challenge for equal pay and a founding member of many external committees involved with the celebration of women s achievements; notably, the Mary Owen Dinner ( ). Butters earned the trust, gratitude and respect of many. Adrienne Clarke A world-renowned botanist, Emerita Professor Adrienne Clarke AC (1938 ) has made significant and enduring contributions to research, the University of Melbourne, the Australian higher education sector and broader society. Clarke s scholarly endeavours have led to new critical insights into the biochemistry and genetics of flowering plants and their reproduction and growth. Her major research contribution has been understanding the mechanism of cell-cell recognition in plants, and her work has led to industrial applications for next-generation controls of insect pests and fungal crop diseases. In 1999, Clarke became the first woman to be appointed a Melbourne Laureate Professor. A respected research leader, Clarke has served as the Chairman of the CSIRO, President of the International Society for Plant Molecular Biology, was a member of the advisory board for the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology and a member of the Australian advisory board of the Global Nature Conservancy. Clarke was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering, as Foreign Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences USA, and the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences. 4

In 2004, Clarke was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for service to science and academia as a leading international researcher, for the application of economic benefit to scientific discovery, and for mentoring future leaders. Beyond the academy, Clarke has been a director of a number of public companies and has served on a number of boards, including Western Mining, Alcoa, Fisher and Paykel, Woolworths and the AMP Society. As Lieutenant Governor of Victoria, Clarke has played an important and influential role for the Victorian community. John Coghlan and Marelyn Wintour-Coghlan Emeritus Professor John Coghlan AO (1934 ) and Professor Marelyn Wintour AO (1937 ) were both in the pioneering group that established the University of Melbourne Family Club Cooperative, in the 1960 s. An early, transformative initiative towards equity and diversity, the Family Club Cooperative remains an important contributor to the University s childcare services and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Professor John Coghlan has been highly influential as a researcher, citizen of the University and an advocate for science and technology in the service of health. He was the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research ( ) at the beginning of the Dawkins era. His distinguished international research career as an endocrinologist was spent largely within the Howard Florey Laboratories of Experimental Physiology and Medicine (Institute from 1971). Coghlan was the first Australian to be recognized with the Dale Medal of the British Endocrine Society (1987) for contributions to International Endocrinology. In 1995 he was awarded the inaugural Clive and Vera Ramaciotti Foundation s Medal and Prize for Excellence in Biomedical Research. As Director of the Florey, Coghlan broadened the research interests of the Institute, established a bioinformatics division, initiated a major technology and equipment update and enabled new platforms in advanced microscopy and mass spectroscopy. His accomplishments and the influential contacts he made throughout his career have proved valuable to the advancement of health and medical research and the life of the University. Professor Marelyn Wintour-Coghlan established an international reputation as a pioneering fetal physiologist and was one of the first scientists to establish a link between adult health and early development. Then called programed development it is now known as the field of Epigenetics. Wintour-Coghlan has been widely recognised for her outstanding contribution to gender equality, her example has been an inspiration to thousands of medical science students and young women embarking on a career in medical research. Wintour-Coghlan has served on the Council of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, and helped promote physiological sciences in Africa and South America. She was an early member of the Endocrine Society of Australia and is an Honorary Life Member. She was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2004, one of only twenty women to be so honored in the first fifty years of the Academy. In 2014, Wintour-Coghlan was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. 5

Lennard Currie Over some four decades of service to the University, Lennard Currie demonstrated exceptional leadership and professionalism, combined with an endearing sense of humour and an abiding commitment to furthering the interests of the institution. Currie was initially employed as Assistant Secretary of the University s Appointments Board in 1967, where he was responsible for all aspects of future and current students and graduates. He proceeded to hold a range of positions across the University, including managing press liaison, public relations and University publications. As Assistant Registrar (Secretariat), Currie provided executive support services to University management and governance committees, including University Council, Academic Board, Convocation. During the 1990 s, Currie was the Director of Executive Services and oversaw the integration of the University s electronic and paper records. As the University s inaugural University Secretary, Currie established the benchmarks for probity, discretion, judgement, expertise and collegiality against which future incumbents have been assessed. He also played an important role in the leadership and governance of the Melbourne University Credit Cooperative and was active in the affairs of the Potter Museum of Art. By his retirement in 2007, Currie was renowned for his wealth of accumulated knowledge and wisdom and has been a model for future generations pursuing careers in governance and management at the University. Mary Emison For more than three decades, Dr Mary Emison (1940 ) dedicated herself to the advancement of the University. From 1973 to 2006, Emison held a number of senior positions at the University, demonstrating an outstanding level of commitment and service, support and loyalty to the institution. Emison held roles as Assistant to the Dean of Science and Assistant Registrar in the Faculty of Science, before taking on the position as Assistant Registrar (Research) in the University s Office for Research. In these roles, Emison was a highlyvalued member of staff, well respected by both staff and students. She was later appointed Director of University Planning, in this role she was responsible for planning, reporting and quality assurance programs and providing expert policy advice and analysis to support the development of the University s strategic and operational plans. In recognition of the depth of her understanding and the quality of her leadership, Emison was appointed Director of the Melbourne Curriculum Project, a critical role in the implementation of the University s ambitious Growing Esteem strategy. In 2013, Melbourne University Press published Emison s Degrees for a New Generation, an account of the making of the Melbourne Model, in which Emison highlights the processes, people and groups involved in bringing about sector-leading reforms to curriculum. 6

Patricia Grimshaw Emerita Professor Patricia Grimshaw AO (1938 ) is highly regarded for her long and distinguished academic career and extraordinary contribution to women s history, academia and the wider community. Her influence within the discipline of history has seen her recognised as a Fellow of both the Australian Academy for Social Sciences and Australian Academy for the Humanities. Grimshaw served as Head of the University s Department of History and Deputy Dean of its Faculty of Arts. She was President of the International Federation for Research in Women s History and, as a Director of the National Foundation for Australian Women, was instrumental in establishing the Australian Women s Archives Project, a register of Australian women who have made a contribution to Australia. Grimshaw developed a pioneering course on women s history, Changing Concepts of Women s Place, an initiative which led to the creation of a centre for the history of women. Grimshaw has the respect and admiration of countless students and is frequently called upon for her skills in research, oration, supervision and leadership. In her retirement, Grimshaw has remained an active member of the University community, mentoring staff and contributing to the supervision of numerous research students. In March 2008, Grimshaw was inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women for pioneering women s history. In the same week, the University of Melbourne launched the Patricia Grimshaw Mentor Excellence Awards to honour her contribution as a mentor of postgraduate students and younger colleagues. Ronald Henderson In the 1960s, Ronald Henderson ( ) established the renowned Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. As Foundation Director of Australia s first institute dedicated to research in economics, Henderson was a pioneer in bringing business, government and welfare agencies together to build a more equitable society. Under Henderson s leadership and with limited funding, the institute rose to international pre-eminence within just a few years of its foundation, a remarkable achievement. Henderson is internationally recognised for his work on measuring poverty. In 1965, Henderson created the Melbourne Poverty Survey, the first systematic attempt to measure poverty in Australia. By estimating the extent of the problem in the City of Melbourne, Henderson revealed that severe pockets of poverty existed in an otherwise relatively affluent society. His work awakened the Australian public from its complacent attitude towards poverty and attracted enormous publicity. In 1972 Prime Minster William McMahon launched a Commission of Inquiry into Poverty with Henderson as its Chair. Henderson s work led to increases in pensions, allowance and benefits and the establishment of a Poverty Line. This much quoted and discussed Henderson Poverty Line continues to be updated, making it a valuable source of longitudinal data on poverty in Australia. 7

Anthony Klein Emeritus Professor Anthony Klein AM (1935 ) has made an outstanding contribution to the identity and standing of the University in a distinguished career over five decades. Klein has generously given his time and expertise, mentoring a generation of University of Melbourne physicists and supporting their own progression through the academic ranks to full professor. In so doing, Klein has helped shape the success of the University s School of Physics and the careers of others. Klein has made significant contributions to research in neutron optics. He conducted a series of landmark experiments that demonstrated that neutrons, although sub-atomic particles of matter, nevertheless display quantum mechanical attributes more commonly associated with waves. These foundational experiments in physics are frequently cited in texts on quantum mechanics. While Head of the School of Physics, Klein oversaw a decade-long staff renewal program to secure the School s future. He has a distinguished record of leadership within Australia s learned societies. Among his many ongoing activities, Klein supports the work of the Australian Academy of Science within the State of Victoria. In all his endeavours, Klein has pursued excellence. An inspiring lecturer, Klein s passion for physics engaged and motivated generations of University of Melbourne students. Olive Wykes-Mence Dr Olive Wykes-Mence OAM ( ) had a distinguished career in education and demonstrated extraordinary service to the University and wider community. Wykes -Mence was greatly admired as a French teacher and teacher of teachers, and she was held in the highest esteem by her peers for her 1966 Survey of Foreign Language Teaching in the Universities of Australia, commissioned by the Humanities Research Council, as well as her many publications on education in France. In addition to her work in teacher training and her own research, Wykes-Mence was devoted to the University s Colleges. Her involvement with International House pre-dated its establishment and ended only with her death. In 1952, Wykes-Mence organised the first University Fair to raise funds for International House to cater for Colombo Plan students, who had been granted scholarships to Melbourne without any plan for their accommodation, as well as Australian students from outside Melbourne. Wykes-Mence was Treasurer and Business Manager for the Journal of the Australian Universities Modern Languages Association and served as a foundation Member of the Council of the Canberra College of Advanced Education. She served on the Council of Presbyterian Ladies College and was also on the Council of the Kindergarten Teachers College. Wykes-Mence was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to education as a teacher of French, through secondary teacher training at the University of Melbourne, and for fostering educational opportunities for girls and women. 8

POSTERA CRESCAM LAUDE The University of Melbourne has a rich and fascinating past. Every building, every department, and every period of time has its own story. While some of these stories have been recounted many times over, a great number remain unwritten. Founded in 1853, two years after Victoria separated from New South Wales and rich deposits of gold were discovered, the University was established to the north of Melbourne. The new institution followed the ideals of mid-nineteenth century universities of secular education, with an emphasis on modern languages and literature, mathematics and natural science, alongside classics and ancient history. From these foundations the University developed, not always smoothly, into new disciplines offering law from 1857, and engineering and medicine from The University admitted women in 1881, and Julia Bella Guerin became the first woman to graduate from an Australian university with a BA in Early debates about the appropriate role of the institution, learning, and the extent to which it should be shielded from commercial and practical issues gave way slowly to a university that by World War Two saw itself as integral to nation building through its capacity for research in the social, natural and medical sciences. In 1947, the University of Melbourne awarded the first Australian PhD. During this early period, the body of students expanded from an initial 16 to 2000 by the end of World War I, and to 6000 by the end of the second World War. This increasing weight of numbers brought with it an increasing influence over public debates, the exploration of public questions and the hosting of critical political and social debates. The Australian academic community has been enriched in the past fifty years with the addition of new universities, an international community of students, and increasing partnerships and engagement with the wider local, national and internal communities.
