This is the questions I ask my self every month when our monthly meetings roll around. The reason I ask this is because I see a lot of engineers/designers not taking part in our meetings.

When I started going to meetings it became apparent this was a place of knowledge. All the combined experience of the members attending the meetings was staggering.

After a few years of being involved with the local chapter (Philly gang), I branched out and started attending the conventions and symposiums; wow, talk about a well of knowledge.

So when I hear the excuse, not interested, I have to shake my head and think to myself, don t you mean not interested in growing in my profession?

This is the questions I ask my self every month when our monthly meetings roll around. The reason I ask this is because I see a lot of engineers/designers not taking part in our meetings. I joined ASPE back in 1985 as I was starting my plumbing design career. At first I didn't take much stock in it except for the Data Books. When I started going to meetings it became apparent this was a place of knowledge. All the combined experience of the members attending the meetings was staggering. Not only did my knowledge base grow but I nurtured many long standing relationships and friendships. After a few years of being involved with the local chapter (Philly gang), I branched out and started attending the conventions and symposiums; wow, talk about a well of knowledge. Over my 30 plus years I have a list of plumbing experts I can call on if I ever get into a bind for information. So when I hear the excuse, not interested, I have to shake my head and think to myself, don t you mean not interested in growing in my profession? Here are some interesting statistics from our monthly meetings: 18 Average Attendance 7 Engineers (5 are board members), (26 engineers/designers in chapter) 4 Affiliates (3 are board members), (14 affiliates in chapter) 6-Affilaites (non-chapter) We try to bring current technical topics to fill the needs of the membership and feel we are doing this. Technical Rob Shorey, CPD, FASPE September 8nd 2015 Backflow Preventer Selection and Usage Applications Presenter: Rob Shorey CPD, GPD, FASPE Volt-Air Consulting Engineers October 13 th 2015 Plumbing Plans and the Plumbing Contractor - Discussion and presentation from a plumbing contractor perspective as to how a plumbing contractor would layout the systems based on engineered plumbing plans they receive. From utilizing wet vent techniques to proper fitting usage to achieve a more efficient and shallower gravity drainage system and manifolding pressure systems to deliver the proper water supply to fixtures. AS well as liability protection (pipe failures causing slip-and-falls, equipment damage, artifact damage in a museums for example). The presentation is non-proprietary and is focused heavily on the EPA mandates, materials, and design guidelines. The three reports scheduled were the hands-free faucet study, the manual dual-flush water closet study, and the electronic faucet water conservation study. The hands-free faucet study was prompted by an all-industry group, following comments issued by Johns Hopkins University regarding the safety of electronic faucets. The research project was headed by RF Vice President Max Weiss. The protocol was developed, the faucets were delivered to the research facility, and we were ready to go. The problem arose when the cost for the research escalated. The cost would have been more than double the funding that had been set aside. To make matters worse, one of our partners withdrew their funding. After discussion with manufacturers, it was decided that additional funding would not be made available. It was with deep regret that the Research Foundation had to drop the project. The faucets were returned to the manufacturer with the Foundation s thanks. The two other research projects are on course; it is just taking longer than originally anticipated. Those two studies are the manual dual-flush water closet study and the electronic faucet study. Both studies are intended to determine water conservation when using these products. Sloan Valve has graciously agreed to donate $100,000 to help fund these projects. However, the total cost for the projects is now approaching between $140,000 and $160,000. You might be asking if we moved the funding from the hands-free project to these two projects. The answer is yes, but we are still short of funding. We need at least $20,000 more and possibly $40,000 more. That is the cost of running proper research projects. The RF Board has asked members and Chapters for assistance in funding these projects. The fundraising campaign has raised additional money, but not the amount we were hoping to raise, so we will continue to ask Chapters and individual members to consider making a donation to the Research Foundation. The RF Board wants to assure you that we are proceeding with these two projects. The research protocol has been developed and peer reviewed. The buildings being used for the studies are currently being determined. We have contractors lined up to make the appropriate installations. Soon thereafter, we will have significant data that will have to be analyzed in preparing a report. Some of the ideas we have for future projects are as follows: Combined 13D Sprinkler and Water Water Quality Effect Hunter s Traps and Waste Lines Heat and Build Uses Air-Admittance Valves Hot Water Temperature in Waste Streams Medical Piping and Bacteria in Water Piping in Water and Waste Water Quality (ph, TDS) and the on Piping Water Quality (ph, TDS) and the on Boiler Potty Reuse Stormwater Harvesting

The topic for this meeting is Siphonic Roof Drain Systems, Presented by: Scott Young, Zurn Industries Please consider bringing a new Engineer to the dinner meeting with you and get them involved with the WCF-ASPE Chapter. We need to increase the attendance at dinner meetings and grow our chapter membership. Last month on February 19, 2016 was the annual Central Florida ASPE Clay shoot. It was a beautiful day and a great event! Thank you to all that sponsored and participated. Next Month April 1, 2016 will be the annual WCF-ASPE golf tournament. This will be held at Rocky Point Golf Course with a BBQ lunch provided at 11:30am and a shotgun start beginning at 1pm. If you are not signed up please do so quickly so Tim Collins can get you registered. The Annual Chapter Sponsorship Program for 2016 is now available for you to sign up.
