Richard Renner Architects has been planning and designing successful buildings for twenty-five years; our work is based on thoughtful attention to client wishes and needs and on a close reading of site conditions and patterns of use. We are dedicated to creating exciting and inspiring places for people, and we seek projects that provide opportunities to develop functional, spiritually fulfilling, and environmentally responsible designs. We have won a number of design awards for new buildings, historic preservation, and adaptive reuse. Project Experience A significant portion of our work has been with institutions and organizations having needs and goals similar to yours. All of these projects required thoughtful analysis of natural and built contexts, careful organization of complex information, and listening to and managing diverse disciplines and personalities. All required working with committees to build consensus and support. Many are libraries or include library functions. These projects include the following: Maine College of Art, Portland, Maine - The phased renovation and adaptive reuse of a 150,000 SF former department store in downtown Portland to create new facilities for the Maine College of Art. The building is on the National Register. Completed spaces include studios (painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, foundry, etc.), classrooms, administrative offices, a gallery, satellite galleries, admissions offices and meeting rooms, and a library. Weaver House, Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts Design of renovations and a compatible, yet distinct, addition to convert a historic house on the Wellesley campus into a new 20,000 SF Admissions Center. The schedule for design and construction was successfully coordinated with the critical cycle of admissions activities. Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library, Lovell, Maine Schematic design of renovations and a significant addition to the small, existing historic library. Working closely with the head librarian and a Building Committee, we developed a preliminary design for to make the facility fully accessible; to improve supervision and staff Page 1

2 functionality; to increase storage and reading areas; and to provide meeting spaces for library outreach and community programs. We also completed a detailed cost estimate and prepared graphic materials and a model for fundraising. Outdoor Leadership Center, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine - Design of the new 5,500 SF headquarters for the Bowdoin College Outing Club. The facility includes a meeting room and a map library. The building was designed to blend with adjacent historic buildings and to nestle in the iconic grove of Bowdoin Pines. Museum at Portland Head Light, Cape Elizabeth, Maine Planning and design of a new museum located in the historic Keepers Quarters. Battery Blair, Fort Williams, Cape Elizabeth, Maine Planning and feasibility study for the re-interpretation and preservation of Battery Blair. Admissions Center, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine Planning and design services for the complete renovation of and additions to an historic fraternity house to create 20,000 SF of offices, conference rooms, a reception center, and computer information and presentation facilities for the Bowdoin College Admissions Department. Western Maine University and Community College Center, South Paris, Maine Planning and design of the conversion of a 13,000 SF historic agricultural building into classrooms, a library, computer labs, and meeting facilities. Maine Audubon Environmental Education Center, Falmouth, Maine - A new 5,000 SF building (designed in association with Samuel Van Dam and Carol A. Wilson, Architect) containing gallery space, a teachers resource area, a kitchen, storage space, offices, a store, a reception area, and classrooms which can be converted into a large meeting hall. Buzzards Bay Center, New Bedford, Massachusetts Planning and design of renovations to convert a historic warehouse into the 12,000 SF headquarters for the Buzzards Bay Coalition. The facility includes a reading area and a reference library. Maine Department of Marine Resources Marine Research Facilities, McKown Point, Boothbay Harbor, Maine - Planning study and design (with Cambridge Seven Associates) of laboratories, a renovated library, a conference facility, classrooms, and offices. Project Team As principal architect, Richard Renner will be continuously involved in planning and management of the project from the initial meetings to the preparation of the final report. Charles Young will be project manager, coordinating team members and documents, a role he has performed on a wide range of institutional projects. 3 Proposal Our hourly rates are $ for principals; $70.00-$95.00 per hour for architects, designers, and drafters; and $40.00 per hour for administrative support. Reimbursable expenses consist of expenditures made directly for the benefit of the project, including travel, long distance telephone calls, photocopying, drawing reproduction, postage, and the cost of any consulting engineering required. Reimbursable expenses will be billed at direct cost. Services not part of this scope include: 1. Investigating the presence, remediation, and disposal of hazardous materials. Additional Qualifications We are good listeners and enjoy the process of collaboration and building consensus. Our history of successful institutional projects is proof of this. An important part of our design process is to bring people together in enthusiastic support of a common goal. Building consensus is an iterative process, and we use diagrams, informal sketches, and sketch models, to give clients every opportunity to participate. We develop, analyze, and compare options to help clients make informed decisions. We prepare flexible agendas for meetings and issue thorough minutes and reports, so that there is a clear record of the process and its results. Project management - We are architects because we like to design, but we realize that successful projects also depend on good organization and communication. We are used to organizing complex information and multiple constituencies. We plan and create exciting and supportive places for learning, working, and living.
