1 Ausgabe 45 Februar 2018 Genadendal-Koor Pastor Schiefer se grootste verdienste naas sy onbaatsugtige werk as predikant vir sy gemeentes is die formele totstandkoming van die Morawiese Basuin kore. Hierdie beweging wat koperblaas-spelers van al die gemeentes van die Morawiese kerk in die Wes- en Oos-Kaap insluit, is grootliks deur hom byeengeroep. Dit sluit ongeveer 500 aktiewe lede in, wat die ouderdomme van sewe tot 80 jaar omvat. Die eerste basuin koor is 1859 in Genadendal gestig deur Eerwaarde Benno Marx van Duitsland en die koor het deur al die jare getrou sy diens in die gemeente gedoen. Op hierdie basis kon Pastor Schiefer deur sy kundigheid voortbou. Deur sy bemiddeling kon geruime getalle koperblaasinstrumente vanaf Duitsland ingevoer word sodat die gemeentes oor kwaliteit instrumente vir die spelers kan beskik. Hy het ook moderne bladmusiek ingevoer om musiekstukke van hoë vaardigheid met sy kore in te oefen. Hy het onteenseglik waarde toegevoeg tot die lewe van 'n groot getal lede in die Morawiese kerk gemeentes. Tot vandag toe is daar groot waardering daarvoor: elke jaar gedurende Advent kom die basuin koor van Genadendal hierheen om hier in St. Johannis Heim op te tree, ook om hulle dankbaarheid teenoor Pastor Karl Schiefer te betuig.

2 Christmas Celebrations A tradition in St J Heim is a Christmas celebration a few days before Christmas for residents whose loved ones will not be with them for Christmas. Relatives and friends bring a plate of Christmas snacks and their gifts. It is a beautiful thought and a lot of fun. Below a few photos. 3 Singing Christmas Carols in the Heim On Christmas eve the residents of Gardens, Parks and some of the nurses sang carols to the residents in Johanniter, Middle Floor, Frail Care and they ended in the foyer of the Gardens flats. 4 Thank you to all volunteers in the St Johannis Heim for their valuable contributions Linda Becker, a retired occupational therapist, provides important weekly support in the Johanniter section, gives input on personal needs of residents, started the knitting project in support of CHOC welfare and brightens up the little garden. Romy Schneider comes every week for either a chat-café or an activity round. Graciela Körte comes twice a week, for Bingo and then the second-hand shop. The Heim has a very special two-bedroom flat for Volunteers that come from Germany. Here we see Barbara, Ruth Ackermann and Gabi Luedecke outside the flat they are staying in. Irmela Blaich lives in Gardens and is on the Heim committee. She chairs a bible study in German once a week and makes life in the Heim special with her music. Suzanne Gebhardt comes every Tuesday morning to teach gymnastics 4

5 Ulli Sachse and his music team: Ingrid Stellbrink, Irmela Blaich, Ulli and Kappi Kappelhoff. Ulrich and Hannelore together frequently take care of the music at the devotions, birthday singing and folksongs. The Management Committee of the St Johannis Organization is responsible for managing the affairs of the Heim, Gardens and recently the Park. They are volunteers, except for Sr Basson, Mr Böhme and Heike Nel. The members of the Committee are: Mr Uwe Voigt, Mr Otto Gerntholtz, Mr Heinz Böhme, Dr Hildegard Welke, Mr Eric Lothaller, Mrs Erika Gerntholtz, Mr Fritz Körte, Sr Marina Basson, Mrs Irmgard Rencken, Mrs Heike Nel (Secretary), Mr Ralph Arend. {Absent: Mrs. Angela Deary, Mr Jan Hildebrandt} 5

6 Onkel Arnold Kohrs het 10 Desember 94 geword. Ons wens hom geluk met die goeie ouderdom. Hy is vanaf 13 November 2012 in die siekeboeg en hy word die laaste ruk al hoe stiller en swakker. Hy was vroeër jare'n plaasboer in Philippi en vandag word hy ondersteun deur sy drie kinders: Helmut het 'n gaste huis in Kamieskroon en as hy kom kuier so drie keer 'n jaar dan word al die verpleegsters bederf. Ludwig bly in Bellville en kom tot drie keer'n week kuier by sy pa. Alida, 'n boervrou in Philippi, kom ook baie hier kuier. Volgens die verpleegpersoneel aard al die kinders na hulle pa, almal so liefdevol en dierbaar. Veels geluk aan Mevrou Milla Redelinghuis wat 3 Januarie 90 jaar oud geword het. Mutti Gretchen Schütz celebrated her 95 th birthday on the 4 th of January. In September of 1949 she left Germany and arrived in Cape Town with husband, Adolf, and three daughters leaving her parents and brother behind in Germany. Adolf s work required the family to move several times between Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban before he retired, and they settled in their house in Pinelands. Gretchen had four daughters who blessed her with 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grand-children. Frau Linda van Rooyen ist eine unserer Einwohnerinnen im "Middle Floor". Sie stammt aus KwaZulu Natal, wo sie in jungen Jahren als ausgebildete Krankenschwester gearbeitet hat. Mit ihren Töchtern steht sie noch immer in Verbindung. Wir gratulieren ihr zu ihrem 93. Geburtstag (am 18. Januar) ganz herzlich und wünschen ihr alles Gute! 6

7 Jeder im Heim kennt unseren freundlichen Pastor Karl Schiefer. Seit vielen Jahren ist er im Heim im "Middle Floor". Seinen 90. Geburtstag konnte er am 22. Januar feiern, zu dem wir ihm herzlich gratulieren und Gottes Segen wünschen! Pastor Schiefer wirkte nach seinem Theologiestudium in der Brüderkirche, zuerst in Deutschland, dann in Südafrika. Er wurde als Missionar zuerst in Genadendal bei Caledon und später in Wuppertal bei Clanwilliam eingesetzt. Bei beiden Stationen widmete er auch den Posaunenchören seiner Gemeinden. Durch gezielte Ausbildung brachte er die Spieler zu großer musikalischer Fähigkeit. Professor Theodor Schwär was born in Germany. When he was four months old the family moved to South Africa as his father was appointed as Lutheran minister in the Eastern Cape. Here he grew up and began his schooling. The Second World War broke out when he was twelve. His father was interned and so he and his brother were taken to their aunt in Keetmanshoop, Namibia. After matric he studied medicine at the University of Pretoria. In 1951 he married Magdalena, née Rust. His career began as fulltime District Surgeon in Knysna and in 1957 he was transferred to Cape Town. He later specialised in Forensic Medicine. He became the Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at Stellenbosch University. Professor Schwär had a very colourful career. He was expert witness in many interesting murder cases and the main contributor to the first Afrikaans handbook on Forensic Medicine. Here in Gardens he keeps busy with a range of unusual things such as making Kochkäse, Sϋlze and droëwors as well as baking bread but his real hobby is gardening. Congratulations to Professor Schwär on his 91st birthday on 24 January. 7
