3 At the end of my PhD thesis I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who supported me throughout my promotion and thereby contributed to the success of this work. First of all I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor Prof. Dr. Kathrin Thedieck. With your guidance I learnt how to approach scientific questions. Your sedulous scientific curiosity combined with constant support and uncountable fruitful discussions gave me the opportunity to work on an interesting and challenging project and grow as a scientist. Thank you! I would also like to especially thank my supervisor Prof. Dr. Ralf Baumeister. You gave me the possibility to perform my PhD thesis in your department, gave me insights in the C. elegans field, and supported me with my transfer to the UMCG in Groningen. Furthermore, I would like to thank all my colleagues in the department of Prof. Dr. Ralf Baumeister for your interest in my PhD thesis and for a continuous support during my time in Freiburg. In particular I would like to thank the members of the Thedieck laboratory in Freiburg: Annika Sonntag, Antje Thien, Birgit Holzwarth, Jennifer Schwarz, Lars März, and Regine Tölle. Thank you for numerous scientific and non-scientific discussions. It meant a lot to me to have not only an excellent working atmosphere but to also have found friends with whom I could enjoy numerous leisure activities. A special thank you goes to Alexander Heberle and Tamara Prentzell. Both of you spent (almost) my whole time as a PhD student with me, first in Freiburg and later in Groningen. I express my deepest gratitude for many many many great (scientific) discussions, for always being there when I needed someone to talk to, and for many fun leisure activities. I would additionally like to take the opportunity to thank Birgit Holzwarth and Miriam Langelaar-Makkinje for excellent organization of the move to Groningen and for a still ongoing exchange of reagents, protocols and ideas. Without you, the transfer would not have processed so smoothly. I would also like to thank all members of the growing Thedieck laboratory in Groningen. Your magic hands in the lab contributed tremendously to the success of my PhD thesis. Moreover, you were not only a valuable colleague but also became a good friend with always an open ear and good advice for various situations in life. Dank je wel! Zonder jou had ik het niet gered. I would also like to thank all members of the Department of Pediatrics at the UMCG for always patiently answering many arising questions, for invaluable scientific and also non-scientific discussions. In particular I would like to thank all people from the 4 th floor in the ERIBA building for a lot of help with getting settled in a new laboratory and for providing an excellent working atmosphere. I would also like to deeply thank Prof. Dr. Malene Hansen. You gave me the ample opportunity to work as a visiting PhD student in your lab and further strengthened my knowledge about C. elegans research. Additionally, you gave invaluable feedback to my Plk1 project throughout the whole study. I would also like to thank Sara Gelino for performing the autophagy screen together with me and for strengthening my hands-on C. elegans lab skills.
