Joshua Cowell Father of Manteca This is the 1st of a four part series In Part 1 we will learn about his early years. By Donna Stafford. Joshua Cowell was born in Tioga, New York on January 2, 1842; to Elida McMaster Cowell and Henry Cowell. He was the sixth child born of nine; having five brothers and three sisters. When he was three years old the family moved from New York to Grant County, Wisconsin in Joshua s mother passed away in 1852 when he was nine years old. In 1861; at nineteen years old, Joshua made the decision to journey west from Wisconsin with a group of emigrants. This group of people brought many familiar names we know upon their arrival here: Salmon, Reynolds, Graves, Castle, Harelson, and Oliver; just to name a few. They all came from Grant County, Wisconsin just like Mr. Cowell. Continue on pg.2 Museum Hours: Wed. & Thurs., 1-3pm; Sat. & Sun., 1-4pm - Call (209) for Info. - Admission is Free

2 PAGE 2 THE MUSEUM Joshua Cowell, Part 1, Continued. Upon his journey west, he drove an Ox team. After four months of travel he reached Carson, Nevada. Upon his arrival he left the Ox train at Carson River and ended up staying in Carson Valley for two years. At this point in his life he made the decision to journey over the Sierra Nevada Mountains on foot. While we don t know for sure, there is a possibility that he may have traveled the Carson Pass to get here. Carson Pass is part of the California Trail; an emigrant trail of almost 3,000 miles. This trail stretches across the western half of the North American continent; as it starts in Western Missouri and crosses the Great Plains into the Rocky Mountains. Then it continues on its way to the gold fields of Northern California. Part of the California trail route was discovered and developed by American fur traders like Kit Carson, Joseph R. Walker and Jedediah Smith. The Carson Pass is known as the Old Emigrant Road. It starts in a winding, long loop around Silver Lake Basin. At one point its elevation is more than 9,500 feet. This road was used between 1848 and 1863; which coincides with Cowells passage through it. He arrived in the great San Joaquin in January of 1863; evidence that he traversed the Sierras during the winter months of Janet Fiore, secretary of the East Union Memorial Cemetery will be giving a power point presentation that touches lightly on California and the civil war as well as the new challenge the United States had; dealing with the dead, and its responsibilities to the families. It will be an informative and enjoyable evening! Mark your Calendars! March 8, 2018 at 7 PM Refreshments will be served!

5 FEBRUARY, 2018 Vincent Indelicato Sept. 2, 1933 Dec. 17, 2017 Charter Member of the Manteca Historical Society It is with great sadness that the museum announces the passing of Vincent Vince Indelicato. He was born at San Joaquin County Hospital on September 2, 1933 to Gaspare and Caterina Indelicato. Vince joins Dorothy, his wife of 62 years who passed away in May. Vince attended Manteca schools and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in Together with his brothers Frank and Anthony, he grew up working in the family-owned wine business founded by their father, Gaspare and Uncle Sebastiano Luppino. Vince has worn many hats in the company from the first sales position to president and chairman of the Board of Directors. In his retirement years, Vince enjoyed daily coffee time and spirited political discussions with his loyal friends. Vince bowled on the same team, in the same Manteca league for more than 60 years. Vince is survived by his children Marie Mathews and husband Kim, Robert Indelicato and wife Leslie; and grandchildren Stephen Mathews, Mollie Bloudoff-Indelicato, Katie Bloudoff-Indelicato, and Kyle Bloudoff-Indelicato. Vincent will be missed here at the Manteca Historical Society and Museum. His contribution to our museum is greatly appreciated and will forever leave a mark on our hearts. Vincent and Dorothy Indelicato have created a story that will now forever become a historical piece to our museum, and we can not wait to share with the community.
