The Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas The Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas is the only statewide nonprofit organization focused on preserving Arkansas's architectural and cultural resources. Founded in 1981, the Alliance's mission is to educate, advocate and assist preservation efforts across the state. Through educational programs centered on architectural heritage, advocating for preservation legislation in the halls of the State Capitol and at the local level, and assisting owners of historic properties with the means and expertise to preserve and restore historic structures, the Alliance has been a statewide voice for preservation in Arkansas for over twenty-five years. History of the Arkansas Governor s Mansion The Arkansas Governor s Mansion sits on eight and one half acres in the Governor s Mansion National Register Historic District. Formerly on the site were Rosewood, the home of William S. Fulton, last territorial Governor of Arkansas; and the original Arkansas School for the Blind. In 1947, Act 257 created a Governor s Mansion Commission and appropriated $100,000 to build a new mansion. Governor Ben T. Laney laid the cornerstone of the new mansion in December Bricks from the Arkansas School for the Blind were salvaged and used in the new construction. The mansion opened on January 10, 1950 with a week-long invitation for the public to tour. Governor and Mrs. Sidney S. McMath, the 36th elected governor of Arkansas, moved into the mansion on February 3, It has since been the personal residence of all Arkansas Governors and their families. The Grand Hall was added in 2003 as part of the mansion remodeling and expansion project. The names of all eleven Arkansas governors who have occupied the mansion are on the runner of the Grand Hall staircase. Each step also depicts a mockingbird, apple blossoms, a diamond, twenty five blue crystals, and pine needles to represent the state tree. Future governors names will be added. The wooden state seal on the floor is inlaid with wood from fifteen native trees found in Arkansas. The two large paintings are of the legendary Arkansas Traveler. All the artwork in the mansion is on loan from the Arkansas Arts Center or the Arkansas Library System and was created by Arkansas artists.
