The popular Gourmet Sampler is just around the corner, coming Sunday, March 15th. Come and enjoy menu samples from over 20 food and beverage establishments from our area, and take part in the big raffle toward the end of the afternoon. Also enjoy music by Park Avenue Jam Band! The event is held at the Manteca Senior Center from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Tickets are available for $20 at the Museum during normal hours, or by calling Phyllis Abram at You may also buy tickets at Guido s Pizza, Accent Carpet One, Tipton s Stationary, German Glaswerks, or by contacting any of the board members on page 7 of this newsletter. All proceeds from the Gourmet Sampler benefit the Manteca Museum. Tickets at the door are $22. All are welcome to attend historical society s annual meeting March 12th Each year the Manteca Historical Society and Museum board of directors and members gather for an informal stateof-the-museum meeting and the election of new board members. This meeting is open to all Historical Society Members. This year, our board nominating chair is 2nd Vice President, Earl Pimentel. 2 PAGE 2 News Briefs Clancy Rogers, Manager We have an exciting month of activities coming up in March. Our Annual General meeting and election of the Board of Directors is on March 12th. Don t forget our GOURMET SAMPLER on March 15th at the Manteca Senior Center from 1pm to 4pm. Tickets are on sale at the Museum or you can purchase tickets from any board member. The Museum was also picked in the city lottery for the right to have a 4th of July fireworks sales stand. We are looking to this as a great fund raiser for the Museum. GREAT FINDS AT GIFT SHOP IN MEMORY OF PETER GRETCHEN JULY 10, 1912 FERUARY 4, 2015 THE MUSEUM Peter Gretchen was a long time member and benefactor of the Manteca Historical Society and Museum. Donating thousands of hours of volunteer time along with numerous monetary donations to the Historical Society and Museum. Peter will be missed by all who knew him. VOLUNTEER CALLIGRAPHER NEEDED Can you write like this? We are looking for a talented museum volunteer to enter the names of special people who have been remembered by museum members in our permanent journal, located in the museum. 3 MARCH, 2015 PAGE 3 PRESIDENT S CORNER DAVE WINEGARDEN FEBRUARY PROGRAM NIGHT DREW A CROWD! There must be something to the adage about mans best friend, because our February program was a real hit with dog lovers. Dog Whisperer and trainer-columnist Dierdra (Didi) McElroy, and partner, Sandee Wall, brought over 50 attendees up-to-speed with an outstanding presentation ranging from the history of dogs, to dog-etiquette, and how to meet and greet a strange dog. Dante, a Dutch Sheppard, and Zeus, an English Bulldog naturally stole the show with their over-the-top manners and personalities. Both are trained therapy dogs. Thanks to all who attended. Thanks also to Jeanie Marsden for arranging our February program, and to all our program volunteers and manager, Clancy, for the arrangements Membership drive Fellow history buffs, we are off to a good start for 2015! A successful membership drive is helping us keep our agenda full with events at the museum. We are pleased to announce that we have just achieved our financial membership goal of $20,000, and have 358 members, at last count! We still have many folks we hope will re-new memberships for this year, and we certainly hope to recruit more new members, as well. Welcome to 17 new members so far for 2015! 5 MARCH, 2015 Lillian Vieria, long-time museum docent, volunteer and museum supporter was presented with a Volunteer-of-the -Year award by board president, Dave Winegarden at a recent docent lunch meeting. Lillian s ongoing dedication to the cause are is well-recognized by the board, and other volunteers! Many thanks to Lillian for her efforts on behalf of the museum! MEMORIAL & HONOR ROLL PROGRAM This is a very significant way to remember those who have passed away, or to honor one for a special event, or tribute. Gifts are normally tax deductible, and the names of those remembered are then inscribed in the Honor Roll Book, which is on permanent display at the museum. 6 PAGE 6 THE MUSEUM Docent Training Held in February As planned, docent training sessions were held every Wednesday in February to provide refresher information for existing docents, as well as new information for those just interested in perhaps becoming a docent in the future. Museum founder, Ken Hafer, provided an up-beat series of informational meetings that was appreciated by all who attended. 9 Volunteers of the Year for 2014 Jeanie Marsden, left, and Mike Brockman, right, recently received awards for their volunteer efforts. Jeanie coordinates museum docent duties, as-well-as raffle fund-raisers, and other initiatives. Mike is the Tuesday Crew maintenance team-leader, and helps out weekly with various other volunteer efforts. Both are board members.
