2 photo: MVRDV photo: MVRDV Anyang Peak Manan-gu Anyang 2-dong Seoksu 1(il)-dong In the mountains next to Anyang, a city in South-Korea, a theme park is developed that stresses the beauty of the site through a series of artistic interventions Anyang Resort Park was a booming location in the 1970s and 80s, but became redundant during the past decade because it couldn t follow up the changes in society One way to revitalize this area is to mobilize its the natural wonders, intensifying nature The path leading up the hill, an essential element of the park, is used as a tool to generate this idea The spiral path transforms into the tower, extending the hill seamlessly, reshaping the peak Two contour lines from the top are used to give form to the path in the new peak, forming an outer and inner spiral The peak s void creates a pavilion; it could hold a small exhibition or installation The space can also be used for performances, allowing visitors to look down on the stage from the top of the hill The path encircling the peak turns it into a destination 2005 MVRDV MVRDV photo: MVRDV 2

3 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Galleria Department Store Apgujeong-dong Seoul The Galleria Department Store project had two main goals The first was a new façade that projects a lively, ever-changing surface In total 4330 glass discs are mounted on the existing concrete skin of the building The glass discs include special dichroic foil generating a mother-of-pearl effect during the day During the night, each glass disc is lit by LED lights which can be programmed to create a multitude of effects The second goal was the renovation of the interior into a luxurious integrated design Inspired by the catwalk the customer finds himself immersed in the world of fashion while moving through the generous corridors The interior design focuses on the elimination of superfluous details and introduces new integrated Big Details photo: Christian Richters Floor area/size m² UNStudio Hanwha Stores Co, LTD Cas 3

5 photo: Thom Mckenzie photo: Thom Mckenzie 40 Bond Bond Street 40 New York New York United States This luxury apartment building on 40 Bond Street in New York, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is a sparkling reinterpretation of the traditional cast iron and brick loft buildings of the surrounding area The 11-storey building contains 27 luxury apartments and 5 townhouses, creating a new typology of apartments which combine housing with the services and amenities of a 5-star hotel The façade is constructed of concrete wrapped in blackened copper and luminescent curved glass The materials of the façade have been treated in numerous ways which create an ornamental ground floor and shimmering upper floors that respond to changes in light At street level the private entrances to the townhouses are protected by a large cast aluminium graffiti-inspired gate The building fits comfortably into its context by reinterpreting the typical Noho loft buildings and their materiality whilst standing out through the interesting and unique use of new materials and manufacturing processes Project is not public! 2007 Herzog and De Meuron Ian Schrager thom photo: Thom Mckenzie Subway: Take the 6 Line to Bleeker St or the B,D,F, V Lines to Broadway-Lafayette 5

7 photo: Bart Reuser photo: Bart Reuser Urbanhive Gangnam-Gu Nonhyeon-Dong Seoul Korean architect Kim In Cheurl designed the innovative Urbanhive tower located in Seoul, Urbanhive is a 17 levels of 70 meter high tower with white exposed concrete and contextually sits on the corner of the street within the urban matrix, featuring the perforated architectural façade The transparent glass screen, separated from structural holes, is only to maintain the internal conditions, not to serve as a window The circular cell placed diagonally reduces weight of a rectangular tube, reinforced concrete structure The cast are made of PO steel using a laser cutting machine and packed with high strength high flow concrete 2010 ARCHIUM Reuser photo: Bart Reuser 7

12 photo: Kim Jong Oh photo: Kim Jong Oh Kyobo Book Center Moonbal-Li Paju Kyobo Book Center Building was designed completely along the Design Guidelines of Paju Book City, the whole city in which it is located According to the guideline, the city was divided into several districts, and each of which had its own urban pattern The sector where Kyobo Book Center is located in had a pattern of 'bookshelves unit', not to make a continuous mass of buildings that might block the view to the adjacent river and mountain As a result, even though it occupied a long rectangular site, Kyobo Book Center was broken into small pieces, each piece facing the same direction of the confronting building masses from the opposite side of the road Mass faces mass; void faces void This arrangement was intended to create a collaborative scene so that every building can show its relationship with the others The façade of the lower body as podium is finished with light transparent glass so that the upper split body with basalt skin appears to be floating photo: Kim Jong Oh Floor area/size m² Kyobo Publishing Co master 9:00-18:00 Take Seoul subway line number 2 or 6 towards Hapjung station Transfer at Hapjung station gate number 2 to take bus No 2200 It takes around mins going to Paju Book City 12

17 photo: Kim Jongsuk photo: Kim Jongsuk Joonggokdong Catholic Church Joongok 1 dong Kwangjingu Began designing in June 1996, Junggokdong Catholic Church took 5 years to complete by early 2001 Compared to the Middle Ages it is not a long period, but in this age of fast life it is quite a stretch The period is substantial enough to change the conceptual philosophies of an architect, and it is humbling to look back on former ideas, some of which one tends to forget after a while However, in 1997 I started a series feature called 'field notes' on the project in an architectural magazine, which left me with traces of the thoughts that were behind the project Some of these fragmented discourses are different from the finished work, and some even differ from what I believe now Nevertheless, they were important clues to the framework for the project Here are some excerptstext by photo: Kim Jongsuk master 17
