It s a multi-purpose complex that hosts a myriad of events including concerts, trade shows, expositions, consumer shows, hockey matches, ice skating, and other special events. 2 two president message & officers PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Eric Postle Greetings Fellow IFMA members Puget Sound FM s are Gung-ho! Wow! What a winter. Wind storms, power outages, snow storms! The physical challenges of this past winter have really given me an appreciation for the gung-ho attitude of our local FMs. Just about everyone that I know has some story to tell of the hardship or challenge that this winter s storms had brought to them. I will always remember the 100 tree that came crashing down in our back yard during the now infamous windzilla windstorm and how my wife and I rushed our four children into the downstairs family room as we nervously watched for the next big tree to drop. It occurred to me that all our local FM s faced similar family concerns, while at the same time are responsible for the safety of their company employees at work, and the ongoing operation of the business. Most of us are primarily responsible to care for our families and homes during natural disasters, but the FM is responsible for BOTH family and work. No matter how big the hill of ice outside his house, or how many trees are blocking his way to work, the FM must get to work and get the job done. It precisely during these tumultuous times that all the FM s preparation is tested and they are called into even greater action! I had a glimpse of this gung-ho attitude when we had our Seattle-Times tour in January. When the snow started piling up the day before the tour, I started getting nervous that no one would brave the early morning icy roads and drive north for the tour. But since it was MLK day, and with most people off we had no effective way of getting the word out to cancel the event, we kept the event on schedule. The morning of the tour, Tyler Kellogg and I sloshed our way out to Bothell thinking that we would be the only one there. But to our surprise we were wrong. Not only was the plant humming along, we had fourteen IFMA Seattle members make the tour! I can guarantee you, that if that was a tour for commercial real estate brokers, not one would have shown up! But FMs are a different breed. I think they tend to rise to the challenge. So bring it on Mother Nature! Our Seattle FMs are ready willing and gung-ho! But for us less hearty souls, let s first hope for a nice long summer and plenty of rounds of golf. World-Class IFMA Educational Symposium returns to Lynwood on March The word is getting out on IFMA Seattle s Educational symposium as this year s event is expected to draw attendance by FMs from throughout the Northwest including chapters in Oregon and British Columbia. This world class event will provide programs that focus on technology innovations, energy cost management, workforce productivity, and high performance facilities. David Brady, President and CEO of IFMA International will deliver the keynote address on The Future of FM. Bob Drewell, Executive Director of the Puget Sound Regional Council on Vision 2010 for Puget Sound will be the luncheon speaker. We will also have a fascinating presentation on work environment planning by Amazon.com and LEED-EB at Adobe Systems as well as programs in technology and strategic planning. This class is based on the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Office Buildings. The Guide was designed to provide recommendations for achieving 30% energy savings over the minimum code requirements of Standard It focuses on small office buildings up to 20,000 ft2, which is the bulk of office space in the U.S. Although the new efficiency standards are much stricter than in the past, they are not the last word in efficient lighting. Using easily obtained lighting technologies and commonly accepted design techniques, achieving additional savings of 30% is a realistic proposition. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the requirements of the Standard and the array of techniques available to reduce connected lighting loads below the published levels. The DC Demo Project piloted various technologies that could save billions of dollars a year in the energy costs of operating data centers, as well as improve reliability and lengthen equipment life.

6 six education features Education Features DC Data Center Demonstration Proves Savings Opportunity Preliminary measurements from a DC Data Center demonstration project indicates the energy needed to run IT equipment in data centers can be reduced by 10 to 20 percent. The DC Demo Project piloted various technologies that could save billions of dollars a year in the energy costs of operating data centers, as well as improve reliability and lengthen equipment life. The demonstration took place at Sun Microsystems in Newark, Calif., this past summer, and more than 20 high-technology companies participated. A collection of brief video presentations is available from Lawrence Berkeley Labs summarizing a recently completed demonstration of using a direct-current strategy for powering data centers. Scholarship funds were established for the UW Certificate in Facilities Management (Sander Abrams Memorial Scholarship Fund) and Building Operator Certification (BOC ). Both programs are recognized as IFMA-Approved Providers for the FMP and CFM credentials. 9 nine IFMA golf - a word from dr. par Happy New Year from Dr. Par I felt it appropriate to respond here to your many questions about how Dr. Par and his consort spent the holidays. Dr. Par has come to accept the mystique that surrounds his activities, and by his own admission, there is no doubt that our society could be dignified somewhat by reasonable emulation thereof. So, to get on with it, what did Dr. Par and his Mrs. do between Christmas and New Year? Dr. Par spends a little time on Christmas morn sampling the variety of spirits that some of his many devotees send. Those whose gifts represent obvious sacrifice and significant expenditure receive a delightful, quip-filled thank-you note. The absence of same to the balance of admirers serves as a useful challenge to try again next year, only harder. Mrs. Dr. Par occupies several of her hours recycling the various golf club gifts that Dr. Par receives. How anyone can presume to value their judgment of golf equipment over Dr. Par s is a source of continuous amazement and humor to both Dr. Par and his rib. Indeed! And we watch some videos, for better or worse the Bobby Jones instructional series absolutely brilliant!; likewise Vol. 23 of Shell s Wide World of Golf, Dow Finsterwald vs. Peter Alliss (whence the expression hit it Alliss!) but with the volume turned all the way down to shut out the insipid commentary of Ben Wright and Curt Gowdy, each in their turn - patronizing claptrap. And speaking of wasted effort, there s always Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius. Jones is represented by James Caviezel of Passion fame as well as any mere mortal can. However, by the end of the film, the melodramatic plot twists shout out for the screen writer s turn at the old whipping post, eh James? Lay it on Quintullus, lay it on! Looking forward to this New Year, Dr. Par, in rare moments of altruistic weakness, always manages to commit to one or two spontaneous resolutions. And for 2007, one of these is to provide corrective guidance to the IFMASeattle Golf Committee as they prepare for their 10th Anniversary Golf Outing in September at Washington National Golf Club. Had I previously met all of the Committee members, or known that the theme was already determined to be related to Caddyshack, I would have never acceded to this request, but Dr. Par is, if nothing else, a man of his word. One might expect that Dr. Par might find this particular theme of great offense to the Game of Golf, but one might not need the insight of Sherlock Holmes to appreciate, as Dr. Par does, the subtle iconic representation of golf traditionalism in the character of Judge Smailes. And so we shall persevere in our dedication to support the well-intentioned work of the Golf Committee (the overall quality of which shall be observed henceforth with a small c ).
