photo: Cibic & Partners photo: Cibic & Partners La Rinascente Milan Via Santa Radegonda Milan The redesign of La Rinascente's exterior by Cibic and Partners was aimed at both restoring the department store's famous portico and reinforcing the Rinascente brand ('s largest department store) with a modern, recognizable image As La Rinascente puts it, 'shopping requires inspiration' The designers copied the shape of the existing portico arches for the new shop windows, while making the new entrance hall rectangular, contrasting with the old structure and emphasizing the new symmetrical axis they had introduced The large, well-lit display windows form a new theatrical decor in the portico This ambience has been extended around the corner by introducing a five-metre-high glass wall, backlit by a network of LED lighting that creates a continuous pattern which can be reconfigured to suit the season or special events In the end, not only the store but also fashion capital Milan will profit from this sophisticated shop window photo: Cibic & Partners 2007 Supplier Supplier Client Cibic & Partners Arkilux Color Kinetics La Rinascente Department Store Kirsten_Hannema Monday through saturday: Sunday: Via Santa Radegonda is one of the side streets of the Piazza Duomo, Milan's central square 7

photo: Archivio Fuksas photo: Archivio Fuksas New Trade Fair Strada Statale 33 del Sempione Milan The New Trade Fair is not only a big project for the Milan region its dimensions make it one of the biggest buildings in Europe Massimiliano Fuksas conceived the site on the outskirts of the city as a new landscape with its own geography The project is structured by a central axis that connects the service centres, offices and the exhibition halls The whole complex is covered by a vast roof - an undulating lightweight structure, with a surface area exceeding square metres, over 1300 metres long and approximately 32 metres wide Made up of a reticular rhomboidal mesh structure in prefinished steel profiles, it is connected via spherical nodes and covered with laminated glass attached via plates to the profiles below It is supported by 183 steel columns 500 mm in diameter which branch into smaller supporting arms above 12 metres Fuksas derived the form from constant altimetric variations as found in the natural landscape in the form of 'craters', 'waves' and 'dunes' 2005 Main designer, Supplier Contractor Supplier Supplier Associate architect Supplier Structural engineer Supplier Contractor Associate architect Building physics consultant Technical engineer Contractor Client Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas Doriana O Fuksas Ask Romein Astaldi Spa Bemo Systems Carpentieri d'italia Giorgio Martocchia Icom Engineering Mero GmbH & Co Permasteelisa Spa Pizzarotti Spa Ralf Bock Schlaich, Bergermann und Partner Studio Marzullo Srl Vianini Spa Fondazione Fiera Milano Kirsten_Hannema photo: Archivio Fuksas Located in Rho-Pero (on the northwestern outskirts of Milan), along highway SS33 8

photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Palazzo Montecatini Via della Moscova Milan Commissioned to Gio Ponti between 1935 and 1938, this building soon became a symbol of rationalist Milan architecture between the two wars In the shape of an H with a private opening onto Via della Moscova on one floor, it is ideal for offices with its internal layout, furnishings and external aspect working together in perfect harmony Externally, the green marble walls and the standardized iron and aluminium locks annonce the expressive clarity and attention to detail that can also be seen on the inside The complex offers avant-garde, typological solutions (mobile floors with individual work posts) as well as technological ones (controlled heating and inflatable posts), which Ponti took care of paying great attention to detail (from website Yahoo! 14 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Nazar Leskiw Duca di Milano Hotel Piazza della Repubblica Milan Designed by postmodernist Aldo Rossi, the Duca di Milano Hotel operates as an annex of the Principe di Savoia Hotel, with which it is linked by a skybridge The façade of Rossi's hotel is made up of red brick and has a linear pattern of windows on a plain surface This stands in stark contrast to its mother building, which has a traditional façade with an abundance of ornaments The interior of the Duca di Milano is more confluent with the Principe's style: the units in the annex are ablaze with regal red fabrics, padded walls, valanced windows, sitting areas, and generous desks that match the Edwardian look of the antique dressers 1988 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber photo: Nazar Leskiw 14

photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Gallaratese II Housing Via Enrico Falck 37 Milan Located in the city of Milan, the Gallaratese II housing complex has the capacity to house 2400 inhabitants Aldo Rossi designed the complex at the 'Gallaratese Quarter II' to be a self-contained village which was even dubbed a 'Palais social' by its tenants This coordinates with Rossi s philosophy of architecture His view that the primary sources of all architectural content lie in the school, the hospital and the prison is reflected in the use of primary forms, axial orientation and repetitive elements in the façades Gallaratese II is designed with two apparent axes: north-south and east-west These indicate the primary circulation routes of the building as well as guiding the relationships between the building and the rest of the quarter (from website University of Colorado Denver) photo: Marloes Faber Public access unknown! 1970 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber 'Bonola' is the nearest underground station The gate to the complex is not always opened 15

photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Velasca Tower Piazza Velasca Milan Close to Milan's city centre, looking up, one can notice the presence of an outstanding profile: it is the outline of Torre Velasca, whose symbolic value one is able to guess from a distance The building was designed in the 1950s by a group of Milanese architects called BBPR after their names: Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers The Velasca Tower belongs to the first generation of Italian modern architecture, nevertheless keeping itself linked to the Milanese context in which it was born, and relating itself particularly to the cathedral, the city's bell towers and above all to the Sforzesco Castle The tower, with its characteristic 'mushroom' shape and height of 99 metres, sticks out into the city centre skyline, made up of buildings, domes, towers and bell towers Its structure recalls the Lombard tradition of the massive profile of towers and medieval fortresses photo: Benjo Zwarteveen Project is not public! 17 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Pirelli tower Piazza Duca d'aosta Milan In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso At 1271 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est 60,000 tons) Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that was experiencing an economic boom The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form Project is not public! 18 photo: Eugenia Silvestri photo: Giacomo De Amicis Value Partners Headquarters Via Vespri Siciliani Milan The buildings for the Value Partners Headquarters in Milan, having pure geometrical shapes, are physically separated but functionally interconnected by footbridges and by a little structure between them, housing the reception The façades have different characteristics: the ones facing the street appear architecturally abstract and rigorous, with a base made in steel, defining a typically urban style The internal parts were made by a composition of steel and glass, to allow a better view on the roof gardens of the lowers buildings The façades at the back, in wood and steel, are related in style, modules, and position The presence of green areas is visible from everywhere in the building, and in the tallest building there is a green vertical structure of 20 metres in height It's a way to obtain green surface and a relationship with nature in a high-density building area photo: Eugenia Silvestri Project is not public! 22 photo: Zanini Marco photo: Zanini Marco Breath Building Geox tower via speronari Milan The building is a renovation of a pre-existing building in Torino Street, one of the most important Milanese axes Due to the impossibility to renovate the façade "in style", the studio decided to build a very recognizable landmark without overbearing the context Only the structural frame has been maintained The new facade is composed by a metal frame that supports windows and opaque surfaces The second transpiring skin is composed by perforated plates: it's heat exchanger, solar filter and optical corrector The necessity to solve the problem of congestion and cement jungle has inspired autumnal colour of the skin The corner of the building hosts contemporary artwork that will change periodically Floor area/size m² Client Dante O Benini & Partners s geox spa marco_zanini photo: Zanini Marco Getting there from Duomo on foot, On the corner between Torino street and Speronari street 22

photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Milano Centrale Piazza Luigi di Savoia Milan Milano Centrale is the main railway station of Milan,, and one of the main railway stations in Europe The station is a railway terminus and was officially inaugurated in 1931 to replace the old central station Due to the Italian economic crisis during World War I, construction proceeded very slowly, and the project, rather simple at the beginning, kept changing and became more and more complex and majestic This happened especially when Benito Mussolini became Prime Minister, and wanted the station to represent the power of the fascist regime The station has no definite architectural style, but is a blend of many different styles, especially Liberty and Art Deco, but not limited to those It is adorned with numerous sculptures The "incongruous envelope of stone" (Attilio Pracchi) of this gigantic and monumental building dominates Piazza Duca d'aosta 1930 Ulisse Stacchini Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 76

photo: Nazar Leskiw Palazzo Lombardia Piazza Città di Lombardia Milan The sinuous interweaving strands of linear office space buildings, 14 meters in width and seven to nine floors in height, which optimize efficiency and flexibility while giving Palazzo Lombardia its distinctive form, are derived from the intersection of 22 circles comprising 11 identical circular rings Owing to their modest scale, these interweaving strands relate well to adjoining residential neighborhoods, while still allowing a slender tower, shaped by the intersection of two curved fragments, to celebrate the new seat of government on the skyline of Milan An important corollary benefit of the curvilinear building concept is the resultant array of interconnected open spaces that invite public passage and public gathering at street level Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 77

NH Hotel Milano Fiera Via Degli Alberghi Milan The project for this hotel in the new Trade Fair in Rho-Pero, Milan, fits in with the city's great architectural-building tradition Two pure geometric forms, which are sixty meters tall and set together at an angle, emerge from the horizontal landscape of the new trade fair The radical pureness of the two buildings embodies the most deeply entrenched and profound of Milanese culture; sobriety and simplicity The two structures are located at the main hub of the orthogonal plan Each tower is inclined at an angle of 5 degrees: the taller tower facing the Trade Fair to the north, the second leaning over mark the pedestrian entrance way photo: Nazar Leskiw 2008 Dominique Perrault Nazar 78

photo: Nazar Leskiw The Restoration of the Theatre alla Scala Via Filodrammatici Milan Theatre alla Scala is an opera house in Milan The theatre underwent a major renovation from early 2002 to late 2004 The theatre was closed following the traditional 7 December 2001 season opening performances of Otello, which ran through December From 19 January 2002 to November 2004 The renovation by renowned architect Mario Botta proved controversial, as preservationists feared that historic details would be lost However, the opera company was said to be impressed with improvements to the structure and the sound quality, which was enhanced when the heavy red carpets in the hall were removed The stage was entirely re-constructed, and an enlarged backstage allows more sets to be stored, permitting more productions 2004 Mario Botta Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 79

photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw UniCredit Tower Piazza Gae Aulenti Milan These three office towers and their podium are the largest components of Porta Nuova Garibaldi, a mixed-use development north of Milan's city center Pelli Clarke Pelli s designed the master plan for the 7-hectare development, which creates a new and grand gateway to the city The towers - 31, 22, and 11 stories tall - include 's tallest building, visible from more than six miles away Spiraling upward, the 31-story asymmetrical tower culminates in a sculptural stainless steel spire Like the two smaller towers, the building is clad in reflective glass Their narrow, curved forms enclose a circular piazza, a new public space that links the buildings to their surroundings Facing the piazza, the facades incorporate sunshades, emphasizing the buildings' fluid shape At the street level, the towers are clad in stone Floor area/size m² Pelli Clarke Pelli s Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 80

photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw MICO Milan Convention Center Piazzale Carlo Magno Milan The project, a direct commission, includes the restoration an renewal of the existing complex, followed by its extension and integration with the new part, thus creating a door open onto the Expo A real earthquake in volumetric terms which required and generated the synthesis which resolves all: the invention of a silvery airy comet which surmounts and embraces the new building head together with part of the flanks and roof of the building Transforming it into a rare new creature yet remaining coherent with the overall complex It is an unmistakable landmark, conceived as a swarm of luminescent rays rippling from the denser nucleus of the bulkhead and forming a 200 metre long tail A comet, in fact, destined to become a symbol and engage in dialogue with City Life On equal terms Because its horizontal extension competes with the height of the skyscrapers 2012 Mario Bellini s Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 81

photo: Nazar Leskiw Estonia Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan The simple structure is built out of recycled and natural materials and organised as three floors of shifting wooden blocks stacked on top of one another as modules On the ground floor visitors will be able to swing on energy generating swings hanging between the modules before trying out some Estonian street food Kadarik Tüür Arhitektid Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 82

Spain Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan The project, entitled "Language of Taste", offers a seemingly simple, smart solution for the complex technical, spatial, functional and thematical challenge of this Expo A pavilion with a clear and contained geometry, a fusion of the traits that Spain's exports: the tradition and the innovation This duality creates a permeable, attractive and flexible space, incorporating a free and open as a patio of oranges, another element of identity of the Spanish culture This rotund implantation manages to create an easily understandable pavilion, generator of memories, whose structure of frames creates an effect of repetition that reinforces this singularity, resulting attractive and impressive Floor area/size m² B720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos Nazar 83

photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Aria and Solaria Towers Viale della Liberazione Milan The two-tower project introduces the first high-end residential high-rise living to Milan Soaring above retail and amenity levels, the 34-story Solaria and 17-story Aria comprised of two independent wings offer world-class views from the Duomo to the Alps The towers are situated in the Porta Nuova Varesine, the mixed-use masterplan and urban renewal project in central Milan, comprising high quality residential apartments, office and retail space, and a cultural centre At the top of each tower are generous two-storey duplex units and three-storey penthouse units with roof gardens, and hydromassage and swimming pools 2013 Arquitectonica Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 84

Palazzo Montecatini II Largo Donegani Milan Within the Italian architectural panorama, the Palazzo Montecatini II represents a particular example of an autarchic building, highlighting an entirely new duality that is the result of design decisions, the use of avant-garde technologies and a clearly American inspiration At the same time, the use of the construction materials and the final outcome that they generate make the building one of the most original Italian built works from the 1930s 1939 Main designer, Gio Ponti Antonio Fornaroli Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 85

photo: Nazar Leskiw Copagri Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan Miralles Tagliabue EMBT has designed a dome for COPAGRI as part of the Expo Milano 2015 The dome is located in the south-east part of the Lake Arena - a large circular pool of water at the end of the Cardo, one of the main axes of the Expo Milano 2015 masterplan - and surrounded by the European Union Pavilion and the Vanke Pavilion Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue - EMBT Nazar 86

Czech Republic Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan The concept is based on the temporality of the pavilion and on the theme of the World Exhibition EXPO 2015 "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" The motto of the pavilion is water The pavilion presents the latest progress in nanotechnology for water purification as well as traditional Czech Republic's relation to water (eg spa, etc) in the form of the swimming pool, which is part of the public space of the pavilion The pavilion is a modular structure The important aspect of modularity is the ability to dismantling the building after the show, move it back to the Czech Republic and reuse modules of the pavilion The contemporary architecture of the pavilion refers to the simplicity of the national style - modernism A swimming pool, a small amphitheatre and a restaurant can be found at the bottom part of the pavilion Chybik + Kristof Associated s Nazar 87

Slovakia Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan Designed by the Slovak architect, Karol Kállay, Slovakia's Pavilion is inspired by the creative concept of "Slovakia Recharge yourself" It is imbued with the spirit of "a country that is rich in natural energy resources, but also a country full of the energy, cultural heritage, traditions and extraordinary experiences" This concept is articulated by its Pavilion in two basic sections: the first, the Recharging Zone, is an external relax area dominated by an energy pylon Here, visitors can take a break, relaxing on a Tuli bag, and recharge their mobile phones, tablet or laptop Karol Kállay Nazar 88

photo: Nazar Leskiw Angola Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan The Pavilion of Angola is divided into three floors plus a terrace, and covers an area of about 2,000 square meters The structure, made with sustainable materials, is very simple and can be easily disassembled and reused The intention of Angola is to create an unforgettable experience, inviting visitors to live the lifestyle of Angola, using technology and augmented reality that ensure physical and tactile experiences through interaction with natural materials Main designer, António Gameiro Paula Nascimiento Nazar 89

Kuwait Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan From the outside, towards the decumanus, the pavilion presents itself as a reminiscence of traditional dhow ships by constructing the front side (and the first part) as a build-up of Kuwait Dhow They give a dynamic volume to the façade, a movement and an attractive energy based on Kuwait's heritage The second, lateral part of the façade is designed as a glass house displaying numerous hydroponic plants cultivated inside Studio Italo Rota Nazar 90

Hungary Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan The pavilion, whose design was selected by a public competition, is the work of architects Attila Ertsey and Herczeg Ágnes Sándor Sárkány It comprises three floors and covers 1,910 square meters The shapes and materials composing the main features are typically Hungarian (including a barn, silos and stables) They have been designed according to the principles of organic architecture that was developed in the mid- twentieth century and is based on local traditions, the understanding of the laws of nature, and on the celebration of the relationship between man and the universe The central area of the pavilion is inspired by Noah's Ark, the symbol of salvation of living beings The two end points take the form of shamanic drums, representing Hungary's ancient roots and highlighting its mystical relationship with nature The drums are adorned with the ancient symbol of the 'tree of life' that flows with fresh water, being the Hungarian one celebrated for its thermal properties Main designer, Landscape architect Attila Ertsey Ágnes Herczegr Nazar 91

photo: Nazar Leskiw German Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan The German pavilion translates the German field and meadow landscape into its architecture in a striking and surprising way: a building consisting of a gently sloping landscape level with a freely accessible surface and a thematic exhibition inside Formally, the architecture is reminiscent of a "supplanted landscape" set in the pavilion's premises which gradually slopes upward to a height of 10 meters The German pavilion then applies the concept of stylised fields and meadows in great detail The use of different native woods, with varied grains and tones, creates a highly distinctive design SCHMIDHUBER Nazar 92

New Holland Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan New Holland Agriculture, one of the world's top manufacturers of agricultural machinery, have announced the innovative proposal conceived by Carlo Ratti Associati, as the winner of the international competition for their 17,000 square foot pavilion at the World Expo 2015 in Milan The proposal, called EARTH SCREENING, features a large agricultural field on its roof, similar to a giant 3D printer thanks to the constant activity of two zero-emission, robotized, self-driving tractors, which will constantly move over the roof, 'writing' and working the land While the roof uses real moving tractors, inside the pavilion visitors can interact with the latest research, products and innovations in sustainable agriculture developed by New Holland, in both a physical and digital way Carlo Ratti Associati Nazar 93

Belgium Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan The Belgian pavilion in Milan, was designed by Patrick Genard, a Belgian architect based in Barcelona, while the scenography is the work of Marc Belderbos, who lectures in the architecture department of the University of Leuven The pavilion aims "to combine a Belgian identity with the exhibition's themes of sustainability and technological innovation," said Peeters' office Belgium's pavilion is modelled on a small city, with green spaces separating "neighbourhoods" and sporting transport stations, bodies of water and a city centre It will be an example of urban planning, including information on energy demands, use of materials and water consumption Patrick Genard Nazar 94

Morocco Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan Responding to the Expo's theme "Feeding the Planet" Morocco's pavilion for the world exposition focuses on the notion of rurality and the diversity and richness of its territories Stretching the entire length of its site from north to south, the pavilion leads the visitor on a metaphorical journey through the country from the Mediterranean to the Sahara, highlighting the agriculture and traditions specific to each region Referring to the materiality and sensuality of rural construction in Morocco, the Pavilion of Morocco presents a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional earthen structures Adobe is placed within enormous pre-fabricated wooden panels which are then mounted onto a wooden frame This method adapts the use of traditional materials to industrialized construction methods At the end of Expo Milan, the panels will be dismantled and re-used OUALALOU CHOI Nazar 96

Ecuador pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Rho Fiera Milan A graphic façade inspired by the multicoloured fabrics of the Otavalo region in Ecuador was designed in order to ensure a great impact and visibility and to transmit the country's environment and cultural heritage The innovative KriskaDECOR panelling system using anodised aluminium curtains where the fabrics depicted become multiple colour chains, means that the frontage reflects the colour range and variety characteristic of a bio-diverse country such as Ecuador 2015 Zorrozua y Asociados Nazar 97
