5 URBAN CONNECTION FLOOR PLAN STUDIO FOUR, SPRING 2010 GROUP PROJECT CLIENT: Chartwell s Dining Services PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project was based on a renovation of Brough Commons dining hall located at the University of Arkansas. The goal of the renovation was to make the dining hall more appealing and to provide a larger area to allow more seating. Sustainability and functionality were also priorities that were taken into account throughout the overall design. CONCEPT: The concept of this project was inspired by the idea of an outdoor terrace located within an urban setting. Colors found in the space consist of a calm, neutral palette accented with bright hues derived from the city streets. A mixture of straight and curvilinear lines added contrast as well as balance to the newly-designed space. A variety of textures were used to reflect the outdoor landscape and downtown street atmosphere. SKILLS ACQUIRED: AutoCad, Google Sketch-Up, hand rendering, concept development, Restaurant design

Born in Milan, Italy in 1891, Ponti s accomplishments through out his life are almost impossible to summarize. Gio Ponti spent most of his life in Milan where he enrolled at politcnico to study architecture. In 1921, Ponti received his degree in architecture but decided to be an artistic director for the ceramics manufacturer, Ricard-Ginori. There he gained a love for color, shapes, and fine craftsmanshp. Ponti believed that architectureand design were harmonious and connected to one another. architecture and design. The chair was so light that a child could lift it up with one finger. Many of today s designers have been influenced by Ponti s light-weight concept. Ponti s style ranged between Classicism and Modernism, and between craftsmanship and industrial production. In 1979, Ponti passed away in his home in Milan. Though he is no longer here, his legend still remains. Ponti was overall a designer of a thousand talents. He has pushed the boundaries between self-expression and design and has set the standard for modern design.
