5 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Øresund bridge European route E20 Malmö Sweden From both sides of Øresund, the Øresund Bridge is a striking spectacle The 204m high pylons with their harp-shaped stay cables are visible from Falsterbo in the south to Glumslöv in the north on the Swedish side and from Stevns in the south to Rungsted in the north on the Danish side The fixed link across Øresund comprises a 4 km immersed tunnel, the artificial island, Peberholm, which is 4 km long, and an 8 km cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 490 m The high bridge s two pylons are 204 m high The navigational clearance is 57 m The bridge is on two levels the railway runs along the lower deck while the motorway along the upper deck 2005 and 2006 have seen a rapid increase in the volume of traffic on the bridge This phenomenon may be due to Danes buying homes in Sweden and commuting to their work in, because the price of housing in Malmö is lower than in Copenhagen photo: Pierre Mens Technical engineer Georg Rotne Arup Danish and Swedish governments Maarten_Scheurwater 5

9 Ordrup School Extension Grønnevænge Charlottenlund School extensions can create 'schoolscapes' by allowing for new connections and by opening up new interior spaces At Ordrup School, the new extension forms the fourth side of a square, making a loop out of what were previously three separate buildings Its plan maximizes connections between all parts of the old school; a system of short cuts allows for new and flexible ways of organizing the school day The programme consists of a café, a media library, a music room, teaching spaces and two auditoriums The larger of the two auditoriums is at once a place of passage and a place of gathering, as are all communal places The choice of colour for the façade is not just an aesthetic one; it also tells the story of the building, one about short cuts and connections between the different levels of the old school buildings The window panels on the second level are black - in contrast to the otherwise strong yellow - so they appear as cut-outs between the connective lines of the building Public access unknown! m² Main designer, CEBRA architecture Søren Robert Lund Municipality of Gentofte Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen Located in Charlottenlund/Ordrup, which is part of the Municipality of Gentofte 9

10 Bakkegaard School Extension Skolebakken Gentofte This project was developed in an unusually close collaboration between architect, client and users One of the architects' tactics was to detonate a series of 'design bombs', architectural solutions that fulfil all the ideas and visions of all the stakeholders involved in the design process The new school building at Bakkegaard School creates a new centre in a former campus situation It stands on what was the old school yard, making room for an indoor sports arena that is also the school's new social space In addition, the architects decided to recreate the old school yard on the new roof The extension has created a 'schoolscape' out of the school building by allowing for a new connection and by opening up a new interior space The green façade is a clear articulation of the landscape theme that defines the interior of the building and its relation to its surroundings CEBRA's ability to work with a very high degree of user involvement generates refreshing design solutions Public access unknown! m² Main designer, Landscape architect CEBRA architecture Kragh & Berglund Søren Robert Lund Municipality of Gentofte Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen Located off Helsingørmotorvejen (motorway 19), near Nymose Park 10

11 photo: Jacob Galtt & Allan Kongslev photo: Jacob Galtt & Allan Kongslev Hadsund School Stadionvej Hadsund photo: Jacob Galtt & Allan Kongslev When architects JJW and bjerg were asked to design a modern school from scratch, their solution had three distinct goals Firstly the school should interact with the surrounding nature and city This was achieved by ensuring that every classroom has a door opening directly into the surroundings As a consequence, the traditional enclosed school yard is absent Secondly the school would include three different learning environments for different age groups The three clusters are arranged according to the pupil's age and level of awareness, inspired by respectively 'village houses' (age 6-9), 'the market town' (age 9-13) and 'metropolis' (age 13-16) The third solution was that most of the structure was to be made out of precast concrete elements, by far the cheapest and fastest way of building in It is an impressive feat that the school was built so quickly and inexpensively, but with a considerable understanding of how children think, learn and live Public access unknown! 2004 Main designer, JJW Arkitekter bjerg arkitektur Municipality of Hadsund Morten_Scholz 11

24 Showcase pavilion Gl Strandvej 13 DK-3050 Humlebæk Self-cleaning surfaces, phase changing materials and built-in sensors that generate energy from the footsteps of the visitors The 3XN pavilion Learning from Nature unites the most advanced technologies and intelligent materials in a preview of the innovative architectural design of tomorrow The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art invited 3XN to design a pavilion demonstrating cutting edge possibilities within sustainable and intelligent materials The result is a pavilion that is built of bio composites with integrated intelligence that creates a dynamic interaction with its physical surroundings and its users It is literally inspired by nature itself: The biological cycle of nature is the fundamental basis for the shape, the materials and the dynamic energy generation It's shaped as a Moebius band to symbolize the biological cycle and the pavilion has a coating of nanoparticles that helps clean the surfaces and clean the air XN 3XN 24

25 Middelfart Savings Bank Havnegade Middelfart Characterized by a dramatic roofscape, the Middelfart Savings Bank puts the Danish town on the island of Fyn on the architectural map and at the same time provides a new public space for local citizens The 83 prism like skylights compose the spectacular roof surface defining the geometry of the rest of the building, in reference to the maritime environment on the harbor front as well as the surrounding timber framed buildings The roof is designed to frame a perfect view towards the Lillebælt waters as well with a functional purpose of shading from direct sunlight Under the roof different functions such as a bookshop, a café, a real estate agent and the cash desk are placed around a central plaza, resulting in the building forming an informal public meeting space m² Structural engineer Landscape designer 3XN COWI Schønherr Landskab Trekantens Ejendomsselskab A/S 3XN 25
