2 Ponderings from the Prez Happy Late Summer to all you Lily Lovers! Our biggest project this year was hosting the North American Lily Society (NALS) Convention and Show the last week in June. We had over 300 stems entered in the Horticulture Division and a record 24 designs entered in the Floral Design Division. There were gorgeous lilies from all over despite all the weather-related problems we all experienced this spring. I d like to start my musings with a huge shout out to everyone in our Iowa Regional Lily Society who helped in one fashion or another to host this great convention and show. It was another great party. Special kudos go to Sue Williams and Wanda Lunn for co-chairing the convention. From Registration to Hospitality to Judging of Horticulture stems and Designs, we had many volunteers behind the scenes as well as on the scene to make the whole event flow through the week. Although we had a few snafus in the background, the comments we received from attendees were very complimentary. We heard especially nice comments about the beautiful gardens on the Saturday bus tour. Many thanks to our garden hosts, Kris and Tom Jurik, Nan and Rip Ripley, Rita and Keith Minard and Cheryl and Vern Ostrander, for all their hard work in their gardens over the past three years to prepare for this tour. Bernie and I attended a Jaycox Family Reunion (his side) last Sunday in Webster City. That was a poignant reminder that school starts this week or next for most kids. The State Fair is over for another year and again I find myself wishing that our lilies would bloom long enough for us to show them at the fair. We would blow people away with a show like at NALS. But alas, another lily season has come and gone. Only a few lonely Black Beauties and Lady Alice are hanging on to the end but even they are too far gone to bring into the house. The lily bulb selection committee has been working on choosing some gorgeous lilies for us to add to our gardens. Be sure and get you order to Mark Riggs as early as you can because we are not ordering the huge numbers of bulbs that we have in the past. Hopefully all the bulb orders will come and at the right time for bulb packing so we can pick up our orders at the symposium. It will be much easier for the committee if everyone either picks up his/her order or makes arrangements with a friend to pick it up. Speaking of the Symposium, save the date of Nov. 3 rd (9am 3 pm) to attend our annual IRLS Symposium. Wanda has been working on lining up speakers and we will have our bulb exchange prior to the presentations. Plan now to bring your extra lily bulbs to share. Lunch will be available as in the past. Looking forward to seeing everyone Sept. 15 th 10:00 am at New Hope United Methodist Church in Des Moines. 3 Minutes of the Iowa Regional Lily Society Spring Meeting April 14, 2018 President Kristi Evans opened the meeting at 10:15 am. Secretary Minutes of the January IRLS meeting were read and approved. Fifteen members were present. The Treasurer's report was presented by Wanda Lunn. Discussion of expenses and profit for the Spring IRLS bulb sales with new Bulb Committee co-chairs Mark Riggs and Kristi Evans. Dennis & Charlene Drews donated a large number of bulbs to the Spring bulb sale. Bulbs were packed in early March in Des Mines by IRLS volunteers. Costs for hosting of the 2018 NALS Lily Show and Symposium will be charged to a separate account. Wanda Lunn is the NALS 2018 Treasurer. Treasurer's report was approved. After discussion of duties of Officers of IRLS, Officer and Board elections were held. Jean Rhodes was elected Secretary. Carole and George Main were elected Co-Treasurers. David Moody was re-elected Director. Wanda Lunn was thanked for her many years as IRLS Secretary/Treasurer. Discussion about Iowa hosting the 2018 NALS Lily Show and Symposium in West Des Moines. Many volunteers will be needed for the 5 day event. IRLS members who volunteer during the event will get reduced registration rates or a free day at the convention. Kristi Evans in in charge of the IRLS volunteers. Mark Riggs is the NALS 2018 Photo Contest Chairman at the NALS Lily Show and Symposium. He encouraged us to photograph our blooming lilies this summer and gave us hints about ideal times to get the shots. Photos with a bug or critters tend to score more awards. Mark explained to us how to choose and mount photos for competition or exhibition. He also handed out foam core mats to interested members. Photo awards are chosen by people who visit the show and fill out cards for their favorite Lily photos. Free to enter and you could win a prize! President Kristi Evans closed the meeting with looking forward to the future with a possible Judges Training School in 2019 or other educational opportunities for IRLS. The meeting was followed by IRLS members helping fill 100 NALS 2018 convention bags with an assortment of souvenirs from NALS beverage coolers to bookmarks, pens, garden markers and more. Hello Everyone, What a show it was! When you are in the midst of the excitement it is easy to forget to Thank everyone who has worked so hard to provide a fantastic time for all of the attendees.

We know that each and everyone of us have lives that are busy enough with everyday obligations, and yet you took some of that time and helped make the 2018 NALS Lily Show a huge success.

Wanda and Sue It is very hard to take pictures of gardens that do them justice and I was busy doing other things during the show and wasn t very good about taking photos. I am hopeful that Mark Riggs will get a photo sharing site set up so that those of you who were unable to be there can share in what those of us at the show experienced.
