2 Dear Lily Friends, The President s Letter Spring come and gone. Summer has waned into fall, the kids have returned to school, and autumn is slowly descending upon us. It won t be long until we are out in the garden digging and planting our lilies for next years blooms. It was a very long winter to me and I was extremely happy to have March arrive with the Flower, Lawn, and Garden Show. Just seeing the things associated with outdoor activities brightened my spirits immensely, not to mention 3 days off work! Our Bulb Sale was another success and we are already looking forward to next spring. Our April business meeting included ELECTIONS! We re-elected 2 directors, the President, the Vice-President, and the newsletter editor. I am sure many of you are unaware that our Secretary/Treasurer was seriously injured in a fall from the roof in April. Wanda has had a long healing road to travel, but is getting better daily. For a dynamo like Wanda this has been a very slow journey to healing. I am sure she would welcome your well wishes both snail mail and ! Our Lily Show was smaller than normal, but still a great show. Thank you to everyone who helped and to all of you who brought stems. The visitors to the show were pleased with the quantity and the diversity of lilies on display. Reiman Gardens loves having us and the traffic is geared to flowers and gardening so it has been a win win scenario for both of us. The bus tour was a delight! Eight beautiful gardens and each one of them unique. I had not been able to go on the last 2 tours and this one made up for it! I will have pictures of the bus tour gardens in the Winter newsletter. They will brighten your dreary days of cold and snow with the warmth of rain, sunshine, and flowers! Work on the Bulb sale has been progressing and while we have been unable to procure martagons this year, we will still have a good selection of lily bulbs to choose from. Wanda has been working extremely hard on the sale list, contacting vendors and putting together our list and it should be ready just days after this newsletter! Watch your boxes!! The September meeting will be on the 12th beginning at 12:30 at the Waukee Library at 950 Warrior Lane. We will have the business meeting and then after the meeting we will have the Awards Presentation Ceremony! The Lily Symposium on October 24th will have 4 speakers on a varied subject matter, it promises to be a great day. Look for a flyer about the symposium in your boxes in early October. Sue For the first summer in 9 years I was able to spend time with my daughter, grandkids, and my garden! While the rain was a bummer (43, yes really, 43 inches of rain since May 12) I was able to learn that butterflies really DO love lilies! 2

3 Secretary s Report IRLS President Sue Williams called the meeting to order at 12:40pm with 11 members present. In the absence of Secretary/Treasurer Wanda Lunn, Teresa Deeth agreed to take the meeting minutes and read the Treasurer s Report. President Williams read the Secretary s minutes of the January 10, 2015, meeting. The minutes were amended to correct a misspelling of Sue Williams and Dian Curran s name. Minutes approved. Teresa Deeth read the Treasurer s Report as of March 30, One question was answered regarding outstanding checks for donations. The report was approved as read. President Williams addressed old business regarding outstanding donation checks. Dian Curran agreed to deliver the check to Buxton Botanical Park. Jean Rhodes agreed to deliver the check to the Iowa Arboretum. President Williams will check with Wanda Lunn to see if she will deliver the check to the Dubuque Arboretum. Kristi Evans provided an update on the Bus Tour set for July 11, Cost is $35 per person. An reminder or post card was sent out by Wanda Lunn. The tour leaves from Altoona again and will cover gardens in the south / southeast. Discussed possibly having lunch at Buxton Botanical Park. One garden host is signed up for sure. Florence Vander Meiden will be contacted for other host garden ideas. George and Carole Main expressed interest in showing their garden. Kristi Evans provided an update on the June 27, 2015, Lily Show at Reiman Gardens. Same format as last year. Judging starts at 10:30am. Peggy Moody and Kristi Evans will talk with Florence Vander Meiden about this year s theme. No show schedule was provided. President Williams indicated that the NALS accepted our invitation to host the show in It will be IRLS 45 th anniversary. President Williams and Kristi Evans started negotiations with Sheraton. Guest gardens include George and Carole Main, Paul Kasal, and Teresa Deeth. New Business: Newsletter Editor position is open. Teresa Deeth nominated Sue Williams noting the exception to term limit. No nominations were received from the floor. Motion passed. Kristi Evans nominated Sue Williams to retain presidency. No nominations were received from the floor. Motion passed. Teresa Deeth nominated Kristi Evans for Vice President. No nominations were received from the floor. Motion passed. Peggy Moody nominated David Moody for Director. No nominations were received from the floor. Motion passed. Fall IRLS meeting is September 12, Hospitality provided by Sue Williams, Peggy and David Moody, and Wanda Lunn. 6 IRLS Lily Show The June Lily Show at Reiman Gardens in Ames was small, but successful. We had 79 horticulture entries, comprised of 90 stems. We had 2 entries that were unable to be judged, and 6 entries of 3 stems of one cultivar. Not only was that an extraordinary number of 3 of a kind entries, but they were also all comprised of 3 extraordinary stems for each entry! The Artistic Design section was small with only 5 entries, but what lovely designs they were! 6

12 Future Events The Fall Lily Symposium is scheduled for October 24, We look forward to a diverse line-up of speakers on equally diverse topics! The Bulb pick-up will be available all day from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM We will enjoy 4 speaker presentations: Growing Aronia Berries, Exploring the Inter-divisional Lilies, Learning about uploading/downloading from the Internet, and Making our own Garden Art. The Library opens at 9:30, it will take a few minutes to sort out the orders, set up the bulbs for swap, and allow or speaker time to get ready for the first presentation which will begin at 10:15. Lunch will be provided for $5.00 if you choose to say in for the lunch hour. All bulbs will need to be picked up by 3:00 PM Some Important Dates to add to your calendar.
