Wilson St. Madison, WI Organization Represented: None Date Nomination Form Prepared: Description Of Construction And Appearance Of Nominated Building: Please Refer To Photos attached at the end of this application Significance Of Nominated Property: This building is an outstanding example of j!j'i ODERN architecture, an architectural philosophy that has dominated architecture over the last six decades of the 20th century the world over. Its influence is still strongly felt today. This building is the only project designed by Skidmore Owings Merrill (SOM) in Madison. There is one in Sun Prairie. The architectural philosophy expressed in this building is a direct lineage from Mies Van Der Rohe, Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus. But the design of this building goes further. It reflects a sense of t\i umanity with the introduction of the atria and the interior landscaping with daylight flooding into the work and customer areas of the building; a recognition of the growing awareness of and sensitivity to a concern for the perceived mterility attributed to the j!j'i ODERN style in the populist movements of the late 1960m. Throughout the structure loyalty to the j!j'i ODERN philosophy is apparent; very clean lines, unembellished surfaces, absents of applied ornamentation, and uniformity of color. Only the sloped, glazed atria reveal the evidence of a gradual shift to the acceptance of more dynamic external form; a preview of things to come in the om and Om. The introduction of this building into Madison, and the Capitol Square, the center of our City, was truly an historic event. While it received mixed reviews a and qualified acceptance, it did shake up the Madisonian attitude about our architectural character.

3 Of very significant historical significance is the architect. SOM was, for all of the latter half of the 20th century, the major disciple and proponent of "MODERN" architecture. And this firm continues to playa major role in large urban architectural projects. Notable among their work are the John Hancock Tower, the Sears Tower, the U.S. Air force Academy and the nationally landmarked, Lever House in N.Y. Currently they are working on the J1l1 round Zero, World Trade Center building, and the worlds tallest building in Burj Dubai. The presence of one of the works of this world renowned firm is not only and honor for Madison, but an essential element icon in the historical lineage of Madisoni!i architectural history. As an added consideration, in light of the alterations proposed by its new owners, most if not all of the energy savings sought can be achieved without changing the exterior configuration of the building. Specifically a major reduction in energy consumption can be achieved by installing insulated glazing units on all sides of the building where glazing is required. Achieving environmental improvement goals is commendable, but is not justified if they require the defacement of an architecial landmark. Especially when these environmental goals can be achieved through other logical means. I urge you to oppose the plan changes and protect Madison1fl architectural heritage. 19 Page 2 of2 The city's Landmark Commission will have a preliminary discussion about the nomination on Oct. 15. The nine-story building, 1 S. Pinckney St., was designed in 1972 by noted architect Bruce Graham of the firm Skidmore, Owings & Menill. Graham also designed the Sears Tower, John Hancock Building and other famed structures. The bank building, completed before the energy crisis of the 1970s, has glass walls with no solar shading, and sloped atriums sheathed with simple polished plate glass. Until now, ULI's proposal has moved through the approval process.
