4 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Centrosoyuz Building Myasnitskaya Ulitsa Moscow Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret won in 1928 the international competition for the design of the Central Union of Consumer Cooperatives' headquarters, the Centrosoyuz They completed the entire design plans but didn't take part on the construction works, due to disagreement with Soviet's authorities The direction of the work was carried out by Nikolai Kolli, who was in contact with Le Corbusier by mail The completed building was faithful to Le Corbusier's principles, it reflects clearly the five points of architecture, but suffered changes in the interior claddings according to the new taste of the Stalinist era The building's site was between Myasnitskaya Street and a new planned avenue, Prospekt Sakharov which was not opened until 1960's The layout is composed by three rectangular volumes for the offices and a fourth curved volume facing the new avenue for the hall and the auditorium The building shows big curtain wall surfaces and the walls clad with red Armenian tuff stone photo: Nazar Leskiw Project is not public! 1936 Main designer, Cooperating designer Le Corbusier Nikolai Dzhemsovich Kolli Pierre Jeanneret Frantisek Sammer Jose_Garcia Metro Station: Turgenevskaya, Sretenskiy Bul'var or Chistye Prudy 4

5 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Zuev Workers' Club Lesnaya Ulitsa Moscow The first sketch for this building was made by Konstantin Melnikov Later the project passed on to Ilya Golosov, who made his own design Golosov's design concept on Zuev Workers' Club was a dynamic composition with a main volume, the glazed cylinder housing the main staircase on the corner, and a set of smaller volumes subordinate to the main one Zuev Workers' Club became an iconic work of the soviet constructivist thanks to the picture of the glazed cylinder moving up and breaking through the massive volume of the third floor The club houses two auditoriums, 850 and 200 seats, and eight small meeting rooms Nowadays the building keeps using on the original function as theatre and social centre Unfortunately, over the years it has experienced some changes that distort the original composition: some volumes, as the second floor glazed balcony on the side façade and the advertisement's marquee on the corner of the first level, have been removed and many bays have been bricked photo: José F García Martín Project is not public! 1928 Ilya Alexandrovich Golosov Jose_Garcia Belorusskaya Metro Station Mendeleevskaya Metro Station 5

6 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Narkomfin Novinsky Bul'var 25C Moscow ata_id=30&do=view_single Guinzburg and his disciple Milinis projected this complex to house the workers of the People's Commissariat for Finance (Soviet Ministry of Finance, shortened Narkomfin) The Narkomfin building showed the results of the typological investigation carried out by the Standardization Department of the Stroikom (Commissariat for Construction), leaded by Guinzburg; highlighting the type F, which inspired Le Corbusier's Unite d'habitation The original project consisted of four buildings: a housing block, a communal block, a kindergarten and a service yard; only the first two blocks were built The building has suffered an ongoing decay since it was finished: the first inhabitants complained against the uncomfortable conditions caused by the collective way of life proposed and modified the dwellings; the ground level was closed to build more dwellings Narkomfin's current state is critical, needing an urgent restoration; nevertheless several people keep living on this modernism masterpiece photo: José F García Martín Project is not public! 1932 Main designer, Moisei Yakovlevich Ginzburg Ignaty Franzevich Milinis Jose_Garcia Barrikadnaya Metro Station Krasnopresnenskaya Metro Station 6

7 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Rusakov Workers' Club Stromynka Ulitsa Moscow The Rusakov Workers' Club is the most innovative of the Workers' Club built by Melnikov and it's considered a masterpiece of 20th century architecture The functional programme of Workers' Clubs (auditorium, meeting rooms, theatre, cinema, study rooms) establishes a new architectural typology, Melnikov conceives the clubs as a system of different sized rooms that can be united or separated according to the requirements of the events The revolutionary volumetry of Rusakov is born of this Melnikov's conception The wedge-shaped plan fans out two levels of rooms, focused all on the main stage The three staggered rooms of the upper level are cantilevered built and their volumes make up the dynamic outward appearance The two remaining triangles between the rooms house the stairs, their vertical glazed strips on façade are in contrast to the white massive cantilevered volumes The exterior gangplank and stairs serve as fire escapes and complete the composition creating a socle photo: José F García Martín Project is not public! 1929 Konstantin Stepanovich Melnikov Kommunalnik Workers' Union Jose_Garcia Sokol'niki Metro Station 7

9 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Sahil Latheef Burevestnik Club 3 ya Rybinskaya Ulitsa 17/ Moscow In 1927, the Burevestnik Local Labor Union decided to establish a club for workers In the same year architect Konstantin Melnikov was requested to develop the club's design At that time designing worker's clubs was a completely new discipline The need for this type of public building had emerged out of the social and economic situation in the first post-revolutionary decade, and their functions and programmes had not been fully developed yet Among the architects searching for new artistic and technical solutions Konstantin Melnikov was the most active and daring The shape and spatial solution for the Burevestnik Club building was mainly dictated by the configuration of the site allocated for the construction The building is an architectural monument enjoying official state protection At present, the n Avantgarde Foundation's headquarters occupies the building photo: Sahil Latheef Project is public! 12 Novo-Ryazanskaya Street Garage Novoryazanskaya Moscow Novoryazanskaya Street Bus Garage, known as "Horseshoe garage", was designed by Konstantin Melnikov and Vladimir Shukhov (structural engineering) in 1926 and completed in 1929 at 27, Novoryazanskaya Street in Krasnoselsky District, Moscow,, near Kazansky Rail Terminal The main building of this truck garage has a semi-circular form, with service workshops and office in a standalone building between the tips of a "horseshoe" Each of two levels could store 110 trucks; unlike Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage, these had to be parked conventionally, using reverse gear Each tip of the horseshoe has a V-shaped protrusion with entry and exit gates set at an angle to the street line; this was supposed to simplify entry and exit from a narrow street This garage is still used as such, and houses Moscow's Fourth Bus Park (from Wikipedia) Project is not public! 1929 Structural engineer Vladimir Shukhov tygger 12

17 Crystall House Korobeynikov lane Moscow Christal House is located in the unique place on Ostozhenka Street next to architectural landmark, former Butikov House and the adjacent park It consists of four buildings united by a one floor stylobate Christal House combines the image of a big (relative to Ostozhenka district) city house with advantages of "club" accommodation These advantages consist of locked design which preserves the space-saving composition of construction historically established in XIX-XX centuries The architecture of the building is both representative and open Large transparent surfaces of the windows and galleries combined with light colored stone of the façade create a friendly view, which harmonizes the surrounding area The complicated architecture of the façade visually enriches the panorama of the lane, adds a modern note in it Project is not public! m² Project Meganom Rose Group robot_gort 17

21 Fusion park Ulitsa Usacheva 2c Moscow Development history of the "Fusion-park" project is a fine example how architecture depends from idea First, the main was a museum, and mixture of forms was the theme Then, after the museum was enclosed in body of the building, the image of complex has changed: "fusion" was replaced by opposition of "residential theme" and "work theme" in the two nearby buildings The mixed-use complex consists of three parts: an apartment building, occupying 2 of 3 ha of the territory (much for a centre), offices sited in the line along the park and Usacheva street, a museum of retro-cars The apartment building consists of the white checkered texture, which became the theme in the huge "Airobus"-house Office part is given to massive plastic of simple forms Mostly it is opposite to its neighbour: the main color is dark, windows are banded, it is large: windows join two storeys Project is public! m² Supplier Reserve Trespa Inteco robot_gort 21

23 photo: Atrium photo: Atrium Boarding School for Orphans 1st Kraskovskiy lane 38b Moscow The main purpose of this project was to create interesting, divergent and informative space for orphans The sophisticated, multilevel space, with the playful composition of different forms and colours, appeared here as the response to the function of the place While picturesque composition of buildings were defined because of the landscape and climate features There are five buildings linked with a second floor gallery The main social space of the complex is the atrium, which is connected with different public facilities There is a small winter garden in the atrium, what makes it look like a real inner courtyard It is the so called in-between space, where the façades of different building are continued without any changes, but becomes the interior This makes the whole complex a small settlement, where you can find streets, squares, bridges and so on photo: Atrium Project is not public! m², Interior architect, Urban planner Atrium mariposa Don-stroy 23

24 photo: Alexei Naroditsky photo: Alexei Naroditsky Moscow youth center Sheremetevskaya Moscow The former cinema was redesigned to become headquarter of so named 'Club of cheerful and resourceful' (KBH) - the popular n TV-show and international intellectual game The initial project for cinema was made in the 1980s It was example of international style with rectangular volume oriented to the main of two streets intersected nearby Since then the tunnel was organized right in front of the cinema and demolished the opportunity to observe the building At the same time transport situation of adjacent crossroad became much more dynamic (static also while traffic jams) The metro-station appeared on the corner So participating in the competition for reconstruction in the beginning of 2012 architects proposed to accentuate the corner of existed volume They wrapped it with two curved planes that meet each other on the corner being inclined oppositely to earth and sky So building got much more contemporary image that visualize transport context of this city site photo: Alexey Naroditsky Project is public! 2012 Atrium mariposa metro station "Mar'ima Roscha" 24

25 photo: Ilya Egorkin photo: Ilya Egorkin Vodnyi retail and business complex Golovinskoe highway Moscow This tower is a recognizable mark of one of the microrayons of the north of Moscow The site is situated next to metro station "Vodny stadion" and was a part of an abandoned industrial zone for the last decades It was need of contemporary life to create an interesting notable tower like a milestone of the road, that leads to the international airport Two blocks: retail and offices were combined in one complex Both are modeled as they contain few really different spaces The office tower is presented as a city sculpture which consists of few interacting volumes It was achieved by making terraces and overhanging some floors The elements are accentuated with graphic of window bars (about 30 cm width), and it is a slap to the structural frame of the façade The lowest part pierce the horizontal trade slab showing itself in the interior, that was designed by the same architects There is supermarket, multiplex, about 120 different retailers, restaurants, open food court and parking photo: Ilya Egorkin Project is public! m², Interior architect Contractor Atrium mariposa Metropolis consulting engeneers MR Group h by subway green line to the station Vodnyi stadion 25

27 photo: Atrium photo: Sergey Muhamedov Headquarters Yandex L'va Tolstovo Moscow In the last 5 years Atrium designed the interior of 4 headquarters for 'Yandex' (one of the biggest n internet companies) Two of them were constructed, the concept from the third project, which wasn't realized, is partly repeated in the recently finished 4th one The new building is located in a former industrial site in the centre of Moscow 'Yandex' occupies 7 floors Every floor is characterized by different colour of carpeting and curtains All working-desks are arranged near to the glassed perimeter while some small conference-rooms, toilets and chill-outs are placed on the lengthwise axis in the core of the building They are grouped in volumes with curved plans The vertical greenery system with automatic watering is used for improving the eco home-like design Employees influence the character of the interior bringing some extra objects as a hammock, an old traffic light and so on photo: Ilia Ivanov Project is not public! m², Interior architect, Urban planner Atrium mariposa Yandex search engine 27

28 photo: Ilya Egorkin photo: Ilya Egorkin Headquarters Yandex - Part II L'va Tolstogo Moscow Atrium's 5th project for the Yandex headquarters started with a closed contest It was an exciting challenge; architects had to prove that they can imagine a new stage in the client's development and interpret it in a unique way There are 5 floors: 3 - for back-office, the top floor for internal conferences and sport facilities, the ground floor contains a reception area, some rooms for administration and space for public events The lobby is sculptural with an "eggshell" curved volume of the waiting zone and the reception counter shaped like an arrow with the Yandex Together with vertical greenery it lets the visitor read brand ideals There are working stations on the perimeter of the back-office floors and groups of technical and meeting facilities in the center The communication spin has a different color theme on each floor an pierces the central volumes which are made as big design-objects with unique forms and finishes (8 types) It gives key to office way-finding photo: Ilya Egorkin Public access unknown! m² Interior architect Contractor Atrium KMT Yandex mariposa By foot from subway circular station Park Kultury 28

32 photo: Mikhail Rozanov Multi-functional complex on Mosfilmovskaya Street Pyreva Moscow The multi-functional complex's main features are a pair of 213-meter high and 130-meter high buildings, connected by a third structure comprised of two parallel, eight story buildings, forming an atrium between them To emphasize the size of the main tower, eight-shade, colored "alpolic" panels were used, which change from bright white at the top to dark shades of limestone at the bottom The Japanese "alpolic" panels are the finishing elements of a suspended façade system assembled in modules, offering an impressive design The rhombusshaped floor plan of each floor is turned slightly counter-clockwise at each level from top to bottom, giving the main tower a "twisted" shape, while an obtuse angle on the first floor morphs into a sharp one at the very top, and vice versa The panel-shaped high rise building is very sculptural as well, because its facades are constructed of three different types of glass, while the basket-like vertical stripes break the monotony Public access unknown! m² Sergey Skuratov Don Stroy robot_gort 32
