3 photo: J Moledkovets photo: B Kroll Langenzipen Business Centre Divenskaya St Petersburg The Langenzipen Business Centre stands in St Petersburg's Petrograd Side, an elegant district north of the city built predominantly in the eclectic styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries The project comprised an extensive reconstruction of a 1965 building, itself an addition to the nearby red-brick factory completed in 1895 in the neo-n style Preserving the four-storey steel frame of the original structure and introducing a transparent glass elevator shaft as a connecting node with the red-brick compound, Tchoban gutted the Soviet building, added two top floors and swathed the main façade in glass plates bearing digital imprints of classical Roman moulding and ornamentation The architects seemed to be taken with the building's duality and ambivalence: the stone-clad side facade contrasts with the translucent front, the architectural patterns dissolve upon closer inspection and the original steel shell is wrapped in the sumptuous glazed décor photo: B Kroll Project is public! 2006 Supplier NPS Tchoban Voss Okalux GmbH Teorema Company Paul_Abelsky 3

4 photo: Project Meganom photo: Project Meganom Mercury Luxury Village Rublevo-Uspenskoye shosse Moscow In Joukovka, a wealthy area of dachas directly west of the outer ring of Moscow, Project Meganom won the commission for a luxury shopping mall plus hotel and theatre In looking for a design concept, they found a fitting reference in the traditional n village, which extends to the scale and materialization of the shops The long street façades, clad with dark red Canadian cedar, are fragmented in order to differentiate the various shops and glass bridges connect the two sides of the street, allowing it to be crossed in all weathers Another interesting aspect is the landscape design Meganom approached Dutch landscapers West8, who designed a pavement of black and white granite cobbles with a very strong graphic pattern - a free interpretation of ice on the Volga In addition, separate islands with flowerbeds and pine trees were placed in the street The ambition of the whole development is very simple: getting rich by entertaining the rich photo: Project Meganom Project is public! 2007 Landscape designer Project Meganom West 8 Mercury Group Barry_van_Waveren Located next to the Rublevo-Uspenskoye highway (west of the MKAD) 4

5 photo: Nuno P photo: Vítor O Alvalade XXI Stadium Rua Professor Fernando da Fonseca Lisbon Portugal Estádio José Alvalade is a football stadium in Lisbon, home of Sporting, one of Portugal's biggest clubs It was designed by Tomás Taveira and was classified by UEFA as a 5-star stadium, enabling it to host finals of major UEFA events This stadium originally projected to hold only 40,000 spectators at any given time - has a capacity of 50,466 and was acoustically engineered as a venue for major concerts Its official opening was on 6 August 2003 when Sporting played and beat Manchester United 3-1 It also hosted the 2005 UEFA Cup final between Sporting and CSKA Moscow, which CSKA won 3-1 The stadium also has underground parking for fans during official matches On the exterior, the stadium features multi-coloured tiles and colours On the interior some seats have different colours to give an illusion that the stadium is always full The stadium also has a marvellous museum of the club and fans may see the museum when visiting the stadium photo: Hugo Mamede Project is public! 6 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Sahil Latheef Burevestnik Club 3 ya Rybinskaya Ulitsa 17/ Moscow In 1927, the Burevestnik Local Labor Union decided to establish a club for workers In the same year architect Konstantin Melnikov was requested to develop the club's design At that time designing worker's clubs was a completely new discipline The need for this type of public building had emerged out of the social and economic situation in the first post-revolutionary decade, and their functions and programmes had not been fully developed yet Among the architects searching for new artistic and technical solutions Konstantin Melnikov was the most active and daring The shape and spatial solution for the Burevestnik Club building was mainly dictated by the configuration of the site allocated for the construction The building is an architectural monument enjoying official state protection At present, the n Avantgarde Foundation's headquarters occupies the building photo: Sahil Latheef Project is public! 11 Stanislavsky Centre Ulitsa Stanislavskogo Moscow The Stanislavsky Centre project consists of the conversion of a series of historic buildings into a mixed-use business and cultural complex, with a significant new residential component These elements are contained within a historical neighbourhood, originally developed in the 19th century by one of 's leading industrialists and cultural patrons, the Stanislavsky family The site comprises 13 buildings of varying age, material, style, and orientation; the landscape is important as it ties the entire site together The proposal includes new courtyards, gardens, and car parking areas The residential element has introduced a new standard of luxury apartments to central Moscow (text from architect's website) Project is public! 13 Danilovsky Fort Business Centre Novodanilovslaya naberezhnaya Moscow This business centre is composed of three vertically-oriented volumes, based on a single-storey, flat ground floor The clear and rational layout idea is softened by the complicated plastic forms of the façades The active rhythm of differently-sized windows that accrues and fades, relieves the monotony inherent to the architecture of many business centres The outlines of the façade windows stress the main peculiarity of the building: indented walls that give a graceful curve to the main façade overlooking the riverside The two glazed consoles protruding from opposite brick towers aspire to meet each other, thus uniting the whole structure Decorative brick of irregularly varying shades and tones is used for all façades The brick mass of the whole complex soars above the ground floor structure because of its glass-filled outer walls The whole composition enabled to create an inner yard on the roof of the ground floor, where an artificial hill can be found Floor area/size m² Sergey Skuratov Biznes Stroy Ltd / Tehnologija Ltd of MR-group tygger 13

14 Barkli Plaza Prechistenskaya naberezhnaya Moscow This building continues to form a new front line of the Prechistenskaya embankment, a process which had been started by building the new office of Moscow International Bank (MIB) quite a few years ago From an urbanistic point of view, the intention was to enlarge the scale of the structures here, in order to make the quay more accomplished and to give it a city-like character On the other hand, there always is the necessity to preserve historically dominant landmarks like the Kremlin towers, Christ-the-Savior temple and other local historic buildings This led to the disconnectedness of the volumes in the front façade of the new complex Three units of the complex facing the embankment are 5 storeys high at the front, while one more level is added further to the rear side of each unit, making an indentation in the roof line 2009 Sergey Skuratov Barkli Moscow tygger 14

16 Club of the Dorkhimzavod Chemical plant Berezhkovskaya Nabrezhnaya Moscow The smallest of Melnikov's clubs (the Frunze Club) was built during his "golden period" of on the territory of the Dorogomilov chemical plant The central rectangular volume of the club, with a roof sloping downward to the rear façade, contains a 300-seat auditorium The projecting ground floor forms a terrace in front of the foyer, while stairs shafts are concealed behind the the stained glass windows of the projecting sides (Anna Bronovitskaya) 1929 Konstantin Stepanovich Melnikov tygger 16

17 Novo-Ryazanskaya Street Garage Novoryazanskaya Moscow Novoryazanskaya Street Bus Garage, known as "Horseshoe garage", was designed by Konstantin Melnikov and Vladimir Shukhov (structural engineering) in 1926 and completed in 1929 at 27, Novoryazanskaya Street in Krasnoselsky District, Moscow,, near Kazansky Rail Terminal The main building of this truck garage has a semi-circular form, with service workshops and office in a standalone building between the tips of a "horseshoe" Each of two levels could store 110 trucks; unlike Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage, these had to be parked conventionally, using reverse gear Each tip of the horseshoe has a V-shaped protrusion with entry and exit gates set at an angle to the street line; this was supposed to simplify entry and exit from a narrow street This garage is still used as such, and houses Moscow's Fourth Bus Park (from Wikipedia) 1929 Structural engineer Vladimir Shukhov tygger 17

20 photo: Atrium photo: Atrium Boarding School for Orphans 1st Kraskovskiy lane 38b Moscow The main purpose of this project was to create interesting, divergent and informative space for orphans The sophisticated, multilevel space, with the playful composition of different forms and colours, appeared here as the response to the function of the place While picturesque composition of buildings were defined because of the landscape and climate features There are five buildings linked with a second floor gallery The main social space of the complex is the atrium, which is connected with different public facilities There is a small winter garden in the atrium, what makes it look like a real inner courtyard It is the so called in-between space, where the façades of different building are continued without any changes, but becomes the interior This makes the whole complex a small settlement, where you can find streets, squares, bridges and so on photo: Atrium Floor area/size m², Interior architect, Urban planner Atrium mariposa Don-stroy 20

21 photo: Atrium photo: Atrium RuArts gallery 1-st Zachatievskiy lane Moscow In this project two 4-storey town houses were unified and transformed into an art gallery of 800 sq meters The architects removed the dividing bearing wall As contemporary art needs just white walls the main focus of the space became the staircase The flights of stairs are turned on different angles on every floor Some of them are enclosed in blind concrete volumes with stepped silhouette It looks like they were thrown through the ceiling For extra experience of the vertical structure there is a range of small gaps and glass parts in the ceilings The last floor is private, so the space of it is not so forceful as everywhere else in the gallery photo: Atrium Project is public! 22 photo: Atrium photo: Sergey Muhamedov Headquarters Yandex L'va Tolstovo Moscow In the last 5 years Atrium designed the interior of 4 headquarters for 'Yandex' (one of the biggest n internet companies) Two of them were constructed, the concept from the third project, which wasn't realized, is partly repeated in the recently finished 4th one The new building is located in a former industrial site in the centre of Moscow 'Yandex' occupies 7 floors Every floor is characterized by different colour of carpeting and curtains All working-desks are arranged near to the glassed perimeter while some small conference-rooms, toilets and chill-outs are placed on the lengthwise axis in the core of the building They are grouped in volumes with curved plans The vertical greenery system with automatic watering is used for improving the eco home-like design Employees influence the character of the interior bringing some extra objects as a hammock, an old traffic light and so on photo: Ilia Ivanov Floor area/size m², Interior architect, Urban planner Atrium mariposa Yandex search engine 22

23 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Rusakov Workers' Club Stromynka Ulitsa Moscow The Rusakov Workers' Club is the most innovative of the Workers' Club built by Melnikov and it's considered a masterpiece of 20th century architecture The functional programme of Workers' Clubs (auditorium, meeting rooms, theatre, cinema, study rooms) establishes a new architectural typology, Melnikov conceives the clubs as a system of different sized rooms that can be united or separated according to the requirements of the events The revolutionary volumetry of Rusakov is born of this Melnikov's conception The wedge-shaped plan fans out two levels of rooms, focused all on the main stage The three staggered rooms of the upper level are cantilevered built and their volumes make up the dynamic outward appearance The two remaining triangles between the rooms house the stairs, their vertical glazed strips on façade are in contrast to the white massive cantilevered volumes The exterior gangplank and stairs serve as fire escapes and complete the composition creating a socle photo: José F García Martín 1929 Konstantin Stepanovich Melnikov Kommunalnik Workers' Union Jose_Garcia Sokol'niki Metro Station 23

24 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Shukhov Radio Tower Ulitsa Shabolovka Moscow Vladimir Shukhov was the first engineer using metal lattice shells as hanging arch-shaped roof structures and hyperboloid towers His first works using this structural type were built on 1896 at the All- Exhibition Later Shukhov used this structural type in many others buildings On 1919 Shukhov made the first design for a hyperboloid radio tower on Moscow, its nine levels reached 350 meters, higher than Eiffel Tower Due to the lack of steel during Civil War Shukhov made a less ambitious design composed by six hyperboloids and a height of 160 meters The tower was constructed using a telescopic method without scaffolding and lifting cranes Each hyperboloid section was assembled on the ground inside the tower and was lifted with the help of pulleys Nowadays the tower is still in use, although it needs a complete restoration, so a foundation has been created to help the tower's conservation The foundation is supported, among others personalities, by Norman Foster 1922 Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín Shabolovkaya Metro Station 24

25 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Zuev Workers' Club Lesnaya Ulitsa Moscow The first sketch for this building was made by Konstantin Melnikov Later the project passed on to Ilya Golosov, who made his own design Golosov's design concept on Zuev Workers' Club was a dynamic composition with a main volume, the glazed cylinder housing the main staircase on the corner, and a set of smaller volumes subordinate to the main one Zuev Workers' Club became an iconic work of the soviet constructivist thanks to the picture of the glazed cylinder moving up and breaking through the massive volume of the third floor The club houses two auditoriums, 850 and 200 seats, and eight small meeting rooms Nowadays the building keeps using on the original function as theatre and social centre Unfortunately, over the years it has experienced some changes that distort the original composition: some volumes, as the second floor glazed balcony on the side façade and the advertisement's marquee on the corner of the first level, have been removed and many bays have been bricked photo: José F García Martín 1928 Ilya Alexandrovich Golosov Jose_Garcia Belorusskaya Metro Station Mendeleevskaya Metro Station 25
