About the scholarship The HASSELL Travelling Scholarship Robin Edmond Award, now in its 21st year, recognises landscape architecture students who show outstanding potential for future contribution to the profession. The HASSELL Travelling Scholarship provides the opportunity for a student to expand their education and explore an area of landscape architecture that they are interested in developing further... a destination undergoing significant redevelopment or renewal of relevance to the profession. The scholarship provides the opportunity for a student to expand their education and explore an area of landscape architecture that they are interested in developing further. The award of $5,000 is to be spent on overseas travel to a destination undergoing significant redevelopment or renewal of relevance to the profession. Established in 1990, the annual program is a recognised measure of the design achievement of landscape architecture students. The award also recognises the excellence of the universities in training the leading landscape architects of the next generation. In 2011, each participating university nominated their three highest performing students who were then assessed at interview by the HASSELL landscape architecture leadership. Submissions were judged against the criteria of: creativity; problem solving; graphic skills; environmental response; presentation; consistency; innovation and practicality. HASSELL received 22 nominations for the scholarship from seven universities around Australia, and it was particularly difficult for the judges to separate this year s outstanding submissions. This booklet contains selected highlights from the portfolios presented. HASSELL would like to congratulate all participants on the quality of the design work entered. 1
Robin Edmond Award Winner HASSELL are delighted to announce that Matthew Hamilton of RMIT is the recipient of the Robin Edmond 2011 Travelling Scholarship. Matthew was chosen after much discussion between the landscape architecture discipline leaders from all of our Australian studios. WINNER Matthew Hamilton, RMIT Project: The Jak Mania (Re)designing cities through slums By immersing himself in the Asian mega city of Jakarta, Matthew sought to investigate new models of urban design through an understanding and appreciation of existing human relationships at a number of specially selected sites within the city. His research and analysis of the interaction between environment and human activity was both thorough and compassionate in its response. The design outcomes were radical yet practical; initiated through a desire to fully embrace the needs of the local population. Matthew s imaginative approach to storytelling through text and graphics impressed the judges. 3 Imagery from The Jak Mania by Matthew Hamilton The Jak Mania by Matthew Hamilton
Special Commendations 4 HASSELL would also like to note the issue of commendations to Jason Cuffe from The University of New South Wales and Susie Quinton from The University of Adelaide. Both of their final design portfolios were extremely impressive, displaying a mature approach to realising two radically different design briefs. 5 COMMENDATION Jason Cuffe, UNSW Project: Fluid Milieu Fluid Milieu is the agency of mapping: speculation, critique and invention by James Corner. It states that a landscape is made up of numerous boundaries and edges. It is how these boundaries overlap and intertwine which create unique spatial experiences and forms. This merging of layers, milieu, is described by has neither beginning nor end, but is surrounded by other middles, in a field of connections (Corner 1999). As a result landscape becomes dynamic, a medium of working, change and uncertainty, rather than a flatbed object lost in temporal space.... has neither beginning nor end, but is surrounded by other middles, in a field of connections Imagery from Fluid Milieu by Jason Cuffe Fluid Milieu by Jason Cuffe
6 COMMENDATION Susie Quinton, The University of Adelaide Project: Moving Galleries Moving Galleries is about regenerating the appreciation of the journey and time travelled between destinations within the public transport system. By creating a merge between the diverse realm of public art and the current public transport system, the transport corridors can be reinvented to become memorable, worthwhile and lasting experiences. 7 Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time Imagery from Moving Galleries by Susie Quinton Moving Galleries by Susie Quinton
Queensland University of Technology 8 Nominees HASSELL would like to thank all of the universities and entrants who participated in The standard of portfolios and final design work submitted was of an extremely high standard. All entrants are to be congratulated for the quality of their design thinking and ability to respond imaginatively to their particular briefs. Haiku Van Keuk Andrew Kyriacue Stephen Orr 9
